A camcorder can be described as an electronic device combining a video recorder and video camera into one complete unit. Equipment has developed so much that gadgets that used to weigh a couple pounds and sizes which will require their own bags to tote around can now be fit into a package not larger than a £2 coin. Unsurprisingly, Sony is at the forefront again as it lately showcased what would be the littlest c-mount mini camera module in the market.
Sony presented its new XCD-MV6 mini camera at the Vision Show in Stuttgart Trade Fair Center, a new addition to its already cutting-edge machine vision technologies. A c-mount camera lens is the yardstick utilized in CCTV cameras and microscope phototubes and features easy interchanging of lens while in use. Sony has developed the design even farther with thinner front and rear panels as well as reduced number of PCB’s used leading to a compact design and smaller camera footprint making it ideal for use with a large range of business applications including safety systems.
The scale of the Micro XCD-MV6 is only 19 x 29 x 29mm or one x 1 x inches and only weights 37g.
This size is only two / three the dimensions of other Sony machine vision camera modules which sometimes measures 57.5 Mm in depth or 2 three / 8 inches. This very compact and miniaturized size combined with fine quality image output make this module OK for applications where space is proscribed.
This mini-camera employs the FireWire interface or what’s often referred to as the IEEE 1394b I / F digital video serial bus interface which is the standard interface used in high speed digital communications and real time information services. This is also the standard for all Sony PC’s and audio-video devices but previous XCD camera modules only have a bandwidth of eight hundred Mbps while the MV6 can reach speeds of nearly 1600 Mbps using the FireWire interface.
You may think this decrease in size can affect the video quality output from the camera, but the MV6 uses the newest in FPGA technologies in its third type wide VGA worldwide shutter that will deliver prime quality photographs, hi-performance levels but at only a small part of it energy usage levels. Other XCD camera modules have the same performance but not in a very compact and small package the MV6 features.
The MV6 is ideal to be used with many commercial environments that have space constraints but require high resolution video output. These take in precision economic applications like automated optical inspection systems, wire bonding, food processing and sorting, bottle inspection and pharmaceutical inspection. The mass feature makes the camera very easy to hide, making it ideal for use with wireless security and surveillance camera systems.
Standard mini camera modules can cost from as low as .95 For cameras with black and white output, to as high as 9.95 For colour output. The XCD-MV6 has a black and white output and will very likely have a ticket between these price ranges when it is made available towards the end of the present year.
