Nissan previewed its next-generation mini-MPV at the 2012 Geneva auto show with this show car, the Invitation concept. While we won’t see the production version in America, the Invitation’s styling—especially the rising strake on the side that Nissan calls a “Squash Line”—is suggestive of what we will see on future U.S.-market Nissan models.

Mazda CX-7 Dies So That the CX-5 May Live

Mazda CX-7 Dies So That the CX-5 May Live:
2010 Mazda CX-7 i
With the imminent arrival of the all-new CX-5, Mazda has decided to retire its CX-7 crossover after the 2012 model year. Given the CX-7’s sales numbers versus those of the competition and the fact that the CX-5 is roomier and more fuel efficient, we can’t fault the decision. Just 5231 CX-7s were sold during the first two months of this year compared to 43,719 Honda CR-Vs in the same period.
Initially, the CX-5 will feature the new 155-hp, 2.0-liter Skyactiv four-cylinder engine; we expect a Skyactiv diesel to come online early next year. Although the gas engine’s output is slightly less than that produced by the CX-7’s 161-hp, 2.5-liter naturally aspirated four—much less its optional 244-hp, 2.3-liter turbo four—Mazda claims the CX-5 is lighter by more than 200 pounds in front-wheel-drive, automatic-transmission trim, which could make for sprightlier acceleration. It also claims 26/32 mpg for the CX-5 compared to the base CX-7’s 20/27.
The CX-5 has a wheelbase of 106.3 inches, exactly two inches shorter than the CX-7’s. With a length of 178.7 and a width of 72.4, the CX-5 is 5.6 inches shorter and 1.3 inches narrower than its sibling. Despite its smaller shadow, the CX-5 actually offers more interior space: 103.8 cubic feet overall to the CX-7’s 101.7.
Mazda will be targeting the Toyota RAV4, the aforementioned Honda CR-V, and the Ford Escape with its new crossover. All of those vehicles outsold the CX-7 significantly in past years, and both the Honda and Ford have been freshly redesigned. The cute ute wars are definitely heating up.

Electric Volkswagen Golf Still on Track to Come to U.S. in 2014, Will Likely Be Called “E-Golf”

Electric Volkswagen Golf Still on Track to Come to U.S. in 2014, Will Likely Be Called “E-Golf”:
Volkswagen Golf Blue-E-Motion
We reported more than a year ago that the electric Volkswagen Golf would go on sale in the U.S. in 2014, but a few new details have come to light since then. First, we now know that the battery-powered Golf will first go on sale in Europe in 2013 as a 2014 model; the car’s rollout in the U.S. is still being sorted, but it is slated to come here sometime in 2014. The car’s delayed U.S. timetable is due to the fact that it will be based on the seventh-generation Golf, the standard versions of which will debut later this year in Europe before hitting the U.S. market next year.
Given that the next Golf will utilize VW’s latest MQB modular architecture, which is designed to accommodate plug-in hybrid gear in addition to a full-electric drivetrain, a plug-in hybrid Golf is also a possibility. Volkswagen representatives wouldn’t say whether such a model was or wasn’t on the way, but did offer that the company is open to looking into all of the possibilities afforded by MQB. The 2013 Jetta hybrid, which goes on sale later this year, likely will gain a plug-in hybrid variant sometime soon, but that car doesn’t use MQB architecture. Thus, if the next Golf does get a plug-in hybrid option, don’t expect it right away.
As for the electric Golf’s name, we’re told it’s currently being referred to as the “E-Golf” both inside of Volkswagen and out. Although it could still change, we like this name better than the car’s initial moniker, “Golf blue-e-motion.” (For more details on the blue-e-motion, you can read our mini test of the prototype car.) The “E-” prefix aligns VW’s electric offerings better by matching the electric Golf with the E-Up!, which goes on sale in Europe by 2013. To reiterate what we’ve been told repeatedly by VW, the E-Up! and the rest of the Up! lineup aren’t destined for the U.S. market.

Chevrolet NASCAR Sprint Cup Car for 2013 to Be Based On “New” Car and Nameplate

Chevrolet NASCAR Sprint Cup Car for 2013 to Be Based On “New” Car and Nameplate:
2012 Chevrolet Impala NASCAR
Chevrolet has announced that it will replace its current Impala SS NASCAR Sprint Cup race car for the 2013 season, and that the new car will be based on a vehicle and nameplate new to the brand’s lineup. Although Chevrolet is playing it close to the vest, a PR representative confirmed the following to us: “Neither the car nor its name will be a derivative of an existing one, such as the new Malibu or the upcoming redesigned Impala, but the Chevrolet race car will closely resemble the production version.”
Signs point to the street car possibly being based on the platform of the rear-wheel-drive Holden Commodore, which was sold here with V-6 and V-8 power as the dearly missed Pontiac G8. Chevy already plans to offer a long-wheelbase version of that vehicle for North American police duty as the Chevrolet Caprice PPV. That said, Chevrolet declined to confirm whether the new vehicle will be both rear-wheel drive on the track and street. But when the company says that customers will be “able to own [a street car] just like [the NASCAR version],” it would seem a bit disingenuous to sell them a car that doesn’t drive the rear tires with an optional V-8, no?
According to the company, both race and production versions will be unveiled in the coming year. In our conversation and without prompting, the Chevy spokesman added this provocative statement: “The consumer car and the race car would not be unveiled before the upcoming New York auto show.” We note the use of the word “before,” as it could indicate the cars will drop in just a few weeks in the Big Apple.
Beyond getting enthusiasts like us excited at the prospect of another rear-drive thumper in GM’s lineup, it’s in Chevrolet’s best interest to take advantage of new NASCAR rules for 2013 that encourage race cars that share styling with their showroom brethren. (Ford and Dodge have already revealed their redesigned Fusion and Charger Cup cars, and they follow that philosophy.) But if it does go the rear-drive, Holden-platform route for the roadgoing model, Chevy might want to think twice about using the Caprice name. There may be too many folks here in the U.S. who remember the “not quite a Cadillac,” public-golf-course rep of previous civilian Caprices.

Obscure Atalanta Marque Being Revived By British Restoration Shop, “New” Sports Tourer Coming in 2013

Obscure Atalanta Marque Being Revived By British Restoration Shop, “New” Sports Tourer Coming in 2013:
Atalanta Sports Tourer
A collaboration between a wealthy enthusiast and a restoration shop in Cheshire, England, has resulted in the revival of the little-known, 75-year-old Atalanta brand. The reborn Atalanta Motors will build and sell a “new” Sports Tourer, a model which first debuted in 1937 and was produced in very limited numbers. The original car boasted lightweight construction and several features said to be advanced for the time. If this sounds a lot like the concept behind many of Morgan’s new/old offerings, it is a fairly similar idea: The Sports Tourer “Revival” uses the original body and chassis design, but receives a modern powertrain and updated interior pieces. The first cars will be handmade and most of their components will be custom-fabricated.
Body and Chassis
Just as on the original Sports Tourer, the new model features aluminum bodywork. Everything the eye can see is intended to replicate the old car as faithfully as possible. We’d say the efforts are successful; every inch of the Atalanta drips with classic Art Deco–era styling. Underneath, the steering, suspension, and critical castings are modern evolutions of the original bits. The chassis is aluminum, and, according to Atalanta Motors, the whole car weighs around 1600 pounds. It rides on a fully independent suspension supported by driver-adjustable dampers at all four corners. Interestingly, the first Sports Tourer also had an all-independent suspension and was available with adjustable dampers dubbed “Telecontrol”; the name carries over to the modern car’s system. Four-wheel disc brakes with four-pot calipers front and rear are fitted to the new Sports Tourer, replacing the original’s drum brakes. Rounding things out—pun intended—are a set of period-looking, 18-inch aluminum wire-spoke wheels shod with appropriately narrow tires.
Engine, Transmission, and Electronics

Atalanta Sports Tourer Atalanta Motors is cribbing the Sports Tourer’s engine and transmission from established manufacturers instead of re-manufacturing the original pieces. The car is powered by a 2.5-liter four-cylinder making 185 hp and 190 lb-ft of torque. The company wouldn’t say where it will source the engine, but did reveal that it is an American piece. (Assuming no bore or stroke shenanigans, it’s probably Ford’s 2.5-liter engine.) Since the original Sports Tourer was available with a supercharger, the new version will be, too. (No output figures were given for the supercharged engine.) Power is routed through a Borg-Warner five-speed manual to the rear wheels via an updated, aluminum-cased differential; the ’30s Atalanta could be had with a Warner synchromesh overdrive manual transmission. Another fun fact: that car also could be fitted with a Cotal pre-selector gearbox. Finally, the updated Sports Tourer has modern electronics, which are discreetly integrated into the dashboard and instrument cluster.
Reality?
The new Atalanta Motors is hoping to build about 12 cars per year, with each one built to order. Although the first run of vehicles will be hand-fabricated, a series of suppliers and manufacturers have already been lined up to furnish some of the parts. We’re told that customers who place orders now can expect their new Atalanta to be delivered by this time next year. Final pricing has yet to be established, but the initial figure in England currently stands at £99,995 before taxes. The company tells us that it has no immediate plans to sell cars in the U.S., but it is currently exploring the feasibility of bringing the Sports Tourer to North America in the future.
Only 21 Sports Tourers were built in the late 1930s. Just seven survive today; of those, only four are in running condition. If we’d have to guess, those four cars would each command money north of Atalanta’s asking price for the new Sports Tourer. Plus, how else are you going to get that new-car smell in a 75-year-old roadster?

Who Can Park Best in England – Men or Women?

Who Can Park Best in England – Men or Women?:
Who Can Park Best in England – Men or Women?

The cause of many an argument. Who is best at parking men or women?
Statistics released by the UK’s Driving Standards Authority, which oversees driving tests, seem to suggest that women do indeed find it more difficult to park their car.
Some 1.6 million driving tests are taken each year with men making 718,244 errors sufficiently bad enough to fail while the same figure for women was 941,962; the sum of these is greater than the actual number of tests as candidates made more than one mistake.
When it came to reverse parking 18,798 men failed, while just under half of the 40,863 women who attempted this task failed.
Estimates suggest that it takes a man 36 hours of teaching to learn to drive against the average women’s 52.
However…a report based on covert surveillance of car parks suggested that while women took longer to park, they were neater and more likely to place the car in the middle of the space.
