Lexus LF-LC Concept Makes a Splash – 2012 Detroit Auto Show

Lexus LF-LC Concept Makes a Splash – 2012 Detroit Auto Show:

Lexus LF-LC Concept Makes a Splash - 2012 Detroit Auto Show

2012 Detroit Auto Show

It’s hard to keep quiet on a new, cool-looking sporty concept car. Especially one that was given to Road & Track late last year for exclusive access weeks before its official debut at the 2012 North American International Auto Show. And here it is finally in the public eye—the awesome Lexus LF-LC concept. The LF stands for Lexus Future, and the LC stands for Luxury Coupe. And we can now share the story behind the story, with great photos and videos in our magazine and on our website.

Lexus LF-LC Concept Makes a Splash - 2012 Detroit Auto Show

On the show floor, while the bright red LF-LC looks sharp under the ballroom lights, I have to say that the concept car’s complex and intricate exterior bodywork can’t be fully appreciated. When I saw the car outdoors under the sun at Calty weeks ago, the tumbling body surfaces of the car are much more apparent. With the LF-LC, there was definitely excitement within Toyota and Lexus, and it was also apparent among the media at the 2012 Detroit Auto Show.

Few added details were revealed at the LF-LC press conference, besides a confirmation that the Lexus concept is powered by a front-engine, rear-drive advanced hybrid drive. Will Lexus build the LF-LC? Or see some of the styling cues and technology pass down to future production models? Certainly the latter; and we hope the former.

Smart For-Us Concept – 2012 Detroit Auto Show:

Smart For-Us Concept – 2012 Detroit Auto Show

2012 Detroit Auto Show

A Smart pickup truck? Yes, you read that right. Making its debut at the 2012 Detroit Auto Show is the For-Us from Smart, a tiny pickup concept made for urban environments…meaning this truck isn’t for agrarian types. Good luck fitting livestock in the 3-foot cargo area.

As small as it is, the For-Us has a 97.7-in. wheelbase and 139.6-in. overall length, gains of about 2 ft. and 3 ft., respectively. The track is 2 in. wider than its older Smart brother.

An all-electric concept, the For-Us is powered by a 55-kw magneto-electric motor. With 96 lb.-ft. of torque, the Smart pickup has a top speed of 80 mph. Its lithium-ion battery is said to take eight hours to charge.

While Farmer John may not appreciate its utility, he might be impressed by the range-extending bicycles. The Smart For-Us Concept comes equipped with a built-in docking station that can charge two electric bikes. Equipped with a 250-watt motor, the 2-wheel mode of transportation can last for up to 60 miles on its battery—sufficient range to find a spare electrical outlet. Extra long extension cord notwithstanding, of course.

2012 Detroit Auto Show

At the 2012 Detroit Auto Show, Mopar introduced a host of upgrades for the Chrysler 200, bundled into two packages. These are similar to the modifications made available for the Dodge Charger Redline.

2012 Chrysler 200 Super S

Stage One augments the styling of the Chrysler 200 with revised aero, including a chin spoiler, side sills, matte-black rear diffuser and rear spoiler. Satin chrome trim adorns the body, which also features mesh grilles in front and black chrome badges. Black 18-in. wheels finish the boulevard-cruiser look.

Stage Two lends a modicum of function to Stage One, swapping in a cold-air intake, cat-back exhaust and coilover suspension. The last item gives the Chrysler 200 Super S a significantly better stance.

Although these changes are nowhere near as substantial as those available on the Dodge Charger Redline, it’s a step in the right direction for the 200.

Ford Confirms EcoBoost Mustang in the Works

Ford Confirms EcoBoost Mustang in the Works:

2013 Ford Mustang GT

While there have been rumors of an EcoBoost-powered Mustang ever since Ford coined the EcoBoost name, the company’s executives have been pretty mum on the subject. But at an event in conjunction with the first press preview day of the 2012 Detroit auto show, the company’s chief product man, Derrick Kuzak, acknowledged the existence of the turbo Mustang.

Said Kuzak, “Given the success we’ve had with EcoBoost across the lineup that we’ve talked about, it’s fair to assume that we will have an EcoBoost Mustang in the very near future.”

And that is all Kuzak is saying about that. Our guess is that the engine in question would be a four-cylinder version, similar to the 2.0-liter unit that will power the upcoming 247-hp Focus ST. If so, it would leave room for the current 305-hp, 3.7-liter V-6 to slot between the new turbocharged, direct-injected four and the 412-hp 5.0-liter V-8 (which will be upgraded to 420 hp for 2013). Earlier rumors indicated that the EcoBoost motor would be a larger displacement four-cylinder making more on the order of 300 hp. We’re reading Kuzak’s words to mean that the new engine option would appear within the next year or two.

Scion Unveils 600-HP, Turbocharged FR-S Drift Car in Detroit

Scion Unveils 600-HP, Turbocharged FR-S Drift Car in Detroit:

Scion Racing FR-S

The 2013 Scion FR-S is supposed to provide an experience like that of the 1980s rear-drive Toyota Corolla, which just so happens to be popular among drifters. (Those fond of oversteer, not vagabonds.) Scion is apparently hoping the FR-S will be subject to the same fondness, so it helped the cause along by creating the drift-ready version that was shown at the 2012 Detroit auto show. The FR-S’s 2.0-liter boxer-four has been turbocharged to produce 600 hp and 500 lb-ft of torque—increases of 400 hp and 349 lb-ft over stock. That ought to do it, but just to be safe Scion also gutted the car, lightening it by roughly 300 pounds for drift duty.

Why are such insane power numbers necessary? Because getting sideways and staying there requires tire-frying horsepower. Scion Racing partnered with Greddy to create the FR-S specifically for Formula Drift competition, where it will replace the Scion tC as drifter Ken Gushi’s ride of choice.

This car’s existence will certainly reignite speculation of factory-turbocharged versions of the FR-S and its Subaru BRZ twin. While it does prove that a turbo will fit under the hood—and probably a big one at that—this one-off nutso setup is far from production-feasible. Still, we’re relatively confident that one or both of the Subayota cars will eventually offer a turbocharged version for consumers. With a more modest power bump, of course.

2013 Audi A8 3.0T Official Info: Downsizing with the Supercharged V6

2013 Audi A8 3.0T Official Info: Downsizing with the Supercharged V6:

2013 Audi A8 3.0T

We think the comparo-winning A8 is pretty darn good as it is, but the bulk of Audi’s competitors have launched more-fuel-efficient versions of their big executive cars. Mercedes-Benz now offers both a hybrid and a diesel S-class; BMW sells the ActiveHybrid7 and the twin-turbocharged, six-cylinder-powered 740i; and Jaguar may soon drop a V-6 into the XJ. To counter that lot, Audi has unveiled the 2013 A8 3.0T at the 2012 Detroit auto show.

2013 Hyundai Veloster Turbo Photos and Info: 201 Horses, Available Matte Paint—and Newfound Relevance?:

2013 Hyundai Veloster Turbo

The Veloster might have gotten interesting again. After the shock of its funky door layout wore off, we discovered that the basic model—powered by a 138-hp, naturally aspirated 1.6-liter four—didn’t offer much to hold our attention. An uninspiring driving experience combined with ridiculously slow acceleration (8.5 seconds to 60 with a manual, 9.1 with the dual-clutch automatic) render it pretty forgettable. But now Hyundai’s front-drive coupe-hatch-ma-bob may actually have something to recommend it besides alien-lander looks: a turbocharged engine.

Quick, what’s Vail known for? Nope. Not brides. That’d be “veil.” Not delicious baby cows either, doofus. That’d be “veal.” Spelled V-a-i-l, it’s a winter-sports haven deep in the Rocky Mountains, accessible only by snowcat and Quattro Audi—and other cars and trucks.
