Fancypants Mini Inspired By Goodwood Priced in the U.K.: Costs More than Double a Cooper S

Fancypants Mini Inspired By Goodwood Priced in the U.K.: Costs More than Double a Cooper S: "

Mini has priced the 2012 Mini Inspired by Goodwood (full details here) in the U.K. For those in need of a refresher, it’s a Cooper S completely worked over by none other than fellow BMW Grouper Rolls-Royce; it walked the catwalk at this year’s Shanghai auto show. And, uh, it will be expensive. How expensive? Well, before we tell you, allow us to state that a standard Mini Cooper S costs £18,015 in Britain—$28,849 at current exchange rates. Here’s what the Goodwood Mini offers above and beyond that model: an interior and exterior pored over by Rolls designers, who trimmed the cabin with the finest leathers, wood, and polished metal, and who subtly classed up the outside with a monochromatic treatment punctuated by chrome detailing.

For this Roller massage, Mini is asking £41,000—and there’s no need to grab a calculators to understand how expensive that is. The Goodwood’s price is more than double that of the car on which it’s based. At current exchange rates the Goodwood doesn’t quite “ring in” so much as it “thud in” at a whopping $65,657. Of course, when they sell a few of these little buggers over here, it’s more likely that the price in dollars will look something like the one in pounds sterling: We figure $40K to $45K is a good rough estimate.

It might help to think of the Mini Goodwood as something of a tiny Rolls-Royce, which would make it the least expensive new Roller available. Furthermore, the Goodwood Mini’s single competitor, the Aston Martin Cygnet, costs £30,995 in the U.K., some triple the £9995 required for the Toyota iQ which serves as that model’s roots. Thus, the Mini’s luxury-version-to-cheap-version price ratio is a more-favorable 2.28:1 versus the Cygnet’s 3.10:1, making it a something of a value in the highly competitive tiny, sybaritic hatchback class. Mini will only produce 1000 of the Goodwood Minis, and British customers can place orders for one starting today.

Toyota Prius Plus Performance Package Brings Body Kit and Lower Springs

Toyota Prius Plus Performance Package Brings Body Kit and Lower Springs: "

The Toyota Prius is pretty much a rolling anathema for enthusiasts, so you’re probably not shocked that we greet the announcement of a performance package for the tadpole-shaped hybrid with some doubt. Nevertheless, mining the go-fast expertise of its Toyota Racing Development (TRD) division, Toyota has bundled a ground-effects package, 17-inch five-spoke forged aluminum wheels, “track-tuned” springs that lower the Prius by 1.1 inches up front and 1.3 inches in back, and a rear anti-roll bar to create the Plus Performance package. Toyota gives customers who opt for the kit a choice between white, silver, gray, and black exterior paints, and even throws in unique badges and floor mats.

Rather than play up the sporty additions to the hilt, Toyota is adamant that vehicles with the Plus package are still Priuses at heart. According to the company, the aero bits actually lower the car’s coefficient of drag and the lightweight forged aluminum wheels prevent any untoward weight gain, lest the mods come at the expense of fuel efficiency.

The comprehensive handling upgrades do seem to lend a whiff of authenticity to the concept of a “sporty Prius,” though, and we must admit that it looks rather purposeful sitting low on its 17-inch wheels—especially coated with the gray or black paint.

The Prius Plus package will be limited, says Toyota, and it will add $3699 to the price of a Prius Two, Three, or Four, and $2999 to the price of a Prius Five. (Those are trim levels, natch.) We’ll let you know if it lives up to the (modest) hype when we can get a PPP-equipped car to test.

2013 Porsche Cayman Spied Up Close

2013 Porsche Cayman Spied Up Close: "

2013 Porsche Cayman (spy-photo)

We now have much closer shots of the next Cayman, and they reveal a more 911-like silhouette and front end. The roof appears flatter than the current car’s, and we can see just how much the stretched wheelbase affects things like the size of the rear window. Less exciting: This prototype appears to have some kind of sensor in the front fascia’s center opening, suggesting some kind of laser- or radar-based system like active cruise control will be offered. Read on for everything we know about Porsche’s next mid-engine coupe.

Bobby Unser at Goodwood

Bobby Unser at Goodwood: "

Bobby Unser

On the recent Ford Focus Estate drive, which was based at Goodwood, my driving colleague and ‘plane buff, suggested we should call in at the small Tangmere aviation museum.

Run by unpaid enthusiasts Tangmere was, during the Second World War, one of the frontline Spitfire bases that along with Goodwood, and others, proved vital in the ‘Battle of Britain.’

As we were about to leave, I spotted an elderly gentleman whose face rang a distant bell somewhere in my memory banks that sounded even louder when I heard his American accent. One of the museum guides nudged me and handed me a card “Do you know who he is?” Turning the card over it read simply “Bobby Unser.”

Bobby’s over here to drive his 1981 Indy 500 winning Penske PC9B up the hill. He and his wife are keen fliers and were enjoying a little bit of nostalgic R&R at the museum and we enjoyed a good 30 minutes of chat especially about Indy and Pikes Peak where, he told me, he had been Walter Röhrl’s mentor in 1987. And Pikes Peak today? “Not what it used to be, it’s all pavement these days,” he said somewhat derisorily.

VW Touareg Team Tackle Pan American Highway

VW Touareg Team Tackle Pan American Highway: "

How would you like to drive 16,000 miles through 14 countries in 14 days? That’s an average of over 1,000 miles a day.

tdi-panamericana_01

It is just what two Germans and a Spaniard plan to do in the next two weeks. They are driving a 2011 VW Touareg TDI the length of the famous Pan American Highway from Ushuaia, the most southern city in the world, to Deadhorse in Alaska. It is to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the longest road in the world. They will also donate one Euro for each 10 kilometers they cover to a charity for two villages in Latin America.

The team had planned to start today but it’s snowing in Tierra del Fuego at the southern tip of Argentina and there’s volcanic ash in the air so the start has been delayed a day or two, according to the website where you can follow their progress (http://www.tdi-panamericana.com)

The current record of 24 days for the journey was set by Tim Cahill and Gary Sowerby driving a 1988 GMC Sierra. It’ll be interesting to see if this Touareg team will be able to lop ten days off the record.

I’ve been on stretches of the Pan-American Highway in Central America and Chile so I know much of it is a crowded two-lane highway. Additionally it often takes hours to cross borders between countries in Central America.

Worst of all there is a 54-mile stretch, called the Darien Gap, on the border of Panama and Columbia where the road does not exist. The team has not stated how they will traverse this missing link, which is in dense jungle. There is a ferry and, of course, they could have a helicopter carry them that short distance to save time!

It’s an adventure I’ve always wanted to do. How about you? Would you like to undertake a road trip like this?

Moving Motor Show at Goodwood

Moving Motor Show at Goodwood: "

453524_64520jag

I’ve just returned from Goodwood’s ‘Moving Motor Show’ which leads up to the Festival of Speed this coming weekend and where punters get the opportunity to drive or be driven up the hill in a variety of cars supplied by manufacturers.

Ford Focus Estate

I had two runs in a new Focus Estate powered by the latest 1.6-liter 179 bhp EcoBoost engine (more of which later) followed by a Mondeo wagon powered by the 237 bhp two-liter version of Ford’s EcoBoost powertrain line up.

But dominating the grounds was this take on the Jaguar E-Type to celebrate its 50th anniversary.

453523_64520jag2

Made out of steel tubes, the sculpture soars nearly 92 feet into the air in front of Goodwood House. At 147 tons the installation weighs the same as 122 Series 1 E-types and took 10 days to install by a firm specializing in bridge building.

Echoing the curved fuselage of the car itself, the sculpture has been created 1640 feet of painted steel tubes 47 inches in diameter. Originally intended for use in gas pipelines, these are constructed from half inch thick steel machined to very high tolerances. Much of the metal was donated by Tata Steel, a subsidiary of Jaguar’s parent company.

Appropriately for the car that earned itself a permanent place in New York’s Museum of Modern Art, the E-type’s sensual shape has been recreated and transformed into a work of art itself by sculptor Gerry Judah. The design process began in January and was followed by detailed engineering calculations and planning stages that lasted four months.

Previous Goodwood installations have incorporated cars into the design but Judah explains why this year was different: “The E-type is famous for its shape but too small and delicate to hoist into the air. I thought I would like to express the form of the car itself without any embellishments. Everyone recognizes the E-type, the shape speaks for itself. You can’t compete with it, you can’t digress from it.”

As well as the sculpture, visitors to the event will be able to see an array of Jaguars past and present. Naturally the E-type will be taking centre-stage but also taking to the Goodwood Hillclimb course will be its famous C and D-Type racing forebears and the XK120 that founded the Jaguar sports car lineage.
