We recently rode with Audi’s R&D chief in his personal 2013 A3 three-door—a configuration we won’t see—which is shorter overall and has a slightly tidier wheelbase than this forthcoming, more-comfort-oriented five-door. Audi’s lineup of V-8–powered S models is growing, and each one has its own place. Of the four models with the new twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8, the 420-hp S7 is the beauty, while the 520-hp S8 is the big daddy with lots of extra baubles. The Europhile’s choice, the S6 Avant, won’t be offered here, which leaves the four-door S6 as the serious performance sedan. Under the skin, it is virtually identical to the S7. But thanks to the lack of a hatch and its slightly more compact dimensions, the S6 weighs about 100 pounds less, and it’s also got a slightly narrower track. The chassis components are identical, however, and so are the engine and transmission. (more…)

When Audi debuted the Q3 Vail concept at this year’s Detroit show, it also used the occasion to announce that the Q3 will be sold in America. Loaded with features such as flashlights that double as hand warmers and portable drink heaters, the aptly named Q3 Vail concept was perfect for the ski-slope set. Now, in Austria—a country known for its mountains, skiing and, uh, extensive use of vowels—Audi has repurposed the Vail as the Q3 Red Track concept.

It took Goldilocks considerably less time than Cadillac to settle on option three. When the current SRX launched for 2010, it came with a pair of V-6 engines, neither of which was to our liking. The base model had a 265-hp 3.0-liter, the optional engine was a Saab-sourced turbocharged 2.8-liter making 300 hp. Both of those are history for 2012, replaced by a single naturally aspirated 3.6-liter V-6. We’ve now tested SRX take three, here equipped with all-wheel drive. (more…)

We like the BMW 3-series, and we like station wagons. So here’s good news: BMW has released the first round of info on the new 3er Sports Wagon, or Touring as it is called in the Old World. It will be offered in the U.S. once again, and we expect to see a 328i with the 2.0-liter four making 240 hp, a 300-hp 335i with the 3.0-liter turbo six, and a 330d with a 3.0-liter straight-six turbo-diesel and around 250 hp.
