Mercedes C63–Based Brabus Bullit Coupe 800 Burns Rubber and Sanity [Geneva Auto Show]

Mercedes C63–Based Brabus Bullit Coupe 800 Burns Rubber and Sanity [Geneva Auto Show]:

Brabus Bullit 800 coupe

Some automotive tuners do their work by adding wheels and body kits to Ferraris in Photoshop. Brabus shoehorns brutal engines into Mercedes-Benzes and then pumps them up with amphetamines. The latest escapee from the Brabus lab debuted at the Geneva auto show. It’s the Bullit Coupe 800, and it’s a monstrous cousin to the two-door Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG.

Brabus Bullit 800 coupe

The name comes from the twin-turbocharged V-12 murderer living under the hood, which makes 800 hp on the European scale—789 on ours—and 811 lb-ft of torque. (On a dyno, the engine is actually good for 1047 lb-ft, but that’s been electronically limited in the car to keep the transmission, a reinforced version of Benz’s seven-speed unit, from lunching itself.) The engine starts life as a plain Mercedes-Benz biturbo V-12, but is then enlarged from 5.5 liters to 6.3 and treated to an otherwise substantial overhaul.
To put those specs in a little context, the standard C63 AMG coupe’s 6.2-liter V-8 makes 451 hp and 443 lb-ft of torque; that power number rises to 481 if you order the Development package. The brutal Black Series version of the C63 bumps output to 510 hp and 457 lb-ft. And, just for good relative measure, the stock bi-turbo V-12 in the S600: 510 hp, 612 lb-ft of torque.

Brabus Bullit 800 coupe interior

Back to the Bullit. Other mechanical changes from a pedestrian C63 include a height-adjustable coil-over suspension with ten settings—it was co-developed with Bilstein—and upgraded anti-roll bars. A SEMA-shaming body kit is installed, which includes carbon-fiber lower spoilers in the front and rear, air intakes, and a wing straight out of The Fast and the Furious accessory catalog mounted on the back. Brabus has also added custom 20-inch wheels, which measure 8.5 inches wide in the front and 9.5 in the back. The interior of the Bullit Coupe 800 is covered in leather and faux suede, and carbon-fiber trim has been added to remind drivers that this is supposed to be a lightweight car. (The fact that Brabus says it actually weighs 4012 pounds will probably not be advertised prominently.) It would be a bit lighter if you order your Bullit to be based on the C63 AMG Black Series, which Brabus says is an option, rather than a standard and heavier C63 AMG.
On the numbers front, here’s what you want to know: Brabus says the Bullit will go from 0 to 62 mph in 3.7 seconds and has a top speed of over 230 mph. The acceleration might seem suspect, since we’ve done 0 to 60 in 3.7 seconds with the 3996-pound, 481-hp C63 AMG coupe. But it’s important to remember that ungodly power numbers such as these are often difficult to transfer onto the pavement; once the Bullit hooks up (if it ever hooks up), it’s on, and on, and on, to that super top speed. As for price, the Bullit Coupe 800 starts at €378,000. That’s $495,000 at today’s exchange rates, but as such conversions are usually a little off-target, we suggest asking Brabus for a price in dollars. Or if it will take your helicopter as a trade-in.

Smart Updates Fortwo Electric Drive for 2012, Adds More Performance [Geneva Auto Show]

Smart Updates Fortwo Electric Drive for 2012, Adds More Performance [Geneva Auto Show]:
2012 Smart Fortwo Electric Drive
Full disclosure: The C/D office is nearly unanimous in the opinion that the Smart Fortwo Electric Drive is something less than a real car. Is it the world’s most luxurious golf cart? Probably. Here to challenge the notion is a fairly comprehensive quarter-cycle refresh for 2012 that brings the subtle exterior changes shared with other 2012 Fortwos and an overhaul of the ED’s biggest weak point: its powertrain. Smart promises better performance from its latest Electric Drive, and showed off the updated model at the Geneva auto show.
Allow us to recap our experiences with the pre-refresh Smart Electric Drive. After subjecting the ED to our vehicle-testing procedures, the numbers weren’t even close to those of a typical modern automobile: Zero to 60 mph took 23.4 seconds and a top speed of 63 mph was all the ED could muster. Smart apparently also feels that this is unacceptable, as this updated version includes a new, more-powerful Bosch-derived electric motor paired with a higher-capacity battery.
2012 Smart Fortwo Electric Drive
The new Smart ED packs 34 more hp for a new total of 74. Torque is up, too, from 89 lb-ft to 96. Battery capacity grows from 16.5 kWh in the outgoing car’s Tesla-sourced lithium-ion unit to 17.6 from a new pack supplied by Daimler subsidiary Deutsche ACCUmotive. As you’d expect, the injection of 85 percent more power is a game-changer for the electric Fortwo. Smart claims the car can now run from 0-to-62 mph in less than 13 seconds before topping out at 75 mph. As the company puts it, this kind of performance puts the ED “on par” with the gas-powered Fortwo. We’d never consider the gas Fortwo a performance bogey, but at least the electric version is no longer dangerously slow.
The new Electric Drive also offers more range; Smart says the car can travel up to 87 miles per charge in urban driving, although the EPA figure might differ. For reference, the EPA-rated range for the Nissan Leaf is 73 miles; the agency certified the outgoing ED at 63. Recharging the battery takes around eight hours when juicing from a standard wall socket, but an optional 22-kW on-board quick charger is available that can do the deed in just one hour. The improved Fortwo Electric Drive will be available in 30 markets by this summer, and we expect the U.S. to be included in that group. Pricing and/or leasing terms have yet to be announced.

Ruf Reveals 991-Based RGT-8 V8-Powered Porsche 911, Stretched Panamera [Geneva Auto Show]

Ruf Reveals 991-Based RGT-8 V8-Powered Porsche 911, Stretched Panamera [Geneva Auto Show]:
Ruf RGT-8
Alois Ruf has made a handsome living for many years by lending more urgency to Porsches, and his company’s latest RGT-8 is a testimonial to his business acumen, to the expertise of the Ruf engineering staff, and most of all to the continuing appetite of clients for more power.
Based on the 991 generation of the Porsche 911, this latest RGT-8 continues to substitute a 4.5-liter V-8 for the Porsche’s standard flat-six. (The RGT-8 treatment also was applied to the 997-gen 911.) As Ruf conversions usually do, the installation here looks very tidy and well-sorted.
More important, is the serious kick in the butt it delivers when the driver tramps on the go pedal. Output of the 991 911’s naturally aspirated sixes ranges up to 400 hp and 325 lb-ft of torque. The Ruf V-8 ups the ante to 543 hp at 8500 rpm and 369 lb-ft at 4000 rp; the engine is a Ruf design, and is produced exclusively for the Bavaria-based company. The 32-valve design has an aluminum block and aluminum heads, incorporates DOHC, a flat crank, and dry-sump lubrication. That’s basic racing practice, which isn’t surprising since the man overseeing its engineering was Hans Mezger, who developed the engine for Porsche’s mighty 917 race cars.
Ruf RGT-8
The price for this conversion, which includes the car, is far from cheap—about €200,000, or a little over $263,000 at current exchange rates.
Of course, 543 hp might not be enough to satisfy some of Ruf’s more power-hungry clientele. No worries. More muscle is gestating in the Ruf R&D section as we speak, via turbocharging. The goal for the boosted V-8 is 900 hp.
If that’s not enough, you may need a Hennessey Venom GT. Or therapy. Or both.
Ruf RXL
Ruf’s Geneva display also included a stretched Panamera sedan with unspecified performance enhancements and interior upgrades. While the lengthened body shell sort of mitigates the awkward appearance of the standard Panamera’s rear half, it’s still not an improvement—the RXL looks bizarre. But that probably won’t matter in chauffeur-mad China, where Ruf is likely to find a number of takers for the car.
This version of the story removes a reference to the late Alois Ruf, Sr., which could have been misconstrued as referencing his son and current Ruf boss, Alois Ruf, Jr.

Brabus Tunes Smart Electric Drive and Smart Ebike [Geneva Auto Show]

Brabus Tunes Smart Electric Drive and Smart Ebike [Geneva Auto Show]:
Smart Brabus ED
Brabus, the well-known Mercedes tuner, is attempting what might be the impossible: Make the Smart Fortwo Electric Drive fun to drive.
Smart Brabus ebikeThis is the first time Brabus has worked over the electric version; past Brabus Smarts were based on the regular car. An updated version of the EV Smart debuted in Geneva with a revised powertrain good for a massive 74 hp and 96 lb-ft of torque. (These are huge improvements over the previous ED’s numbers, if you can believe it.) In this Brabus version, the ED’s electric motor is coerced into stirring up 81 hp and 100 lb-ft of torque.
Brabus’s electric car is equipped with a sports suspension that lowers it by 0.4 inch. The standard wheels have been replaced with 16-inchers in the front and 17s at the rear. Other changes include a sport steering wheel with paddles that let the driver select a more aggressive battery-recuperation setting. Plus, the requisite aero kit.
Also revealed at the Geneva show was the Smart Brabus ebike. In the same powerful, eco-friendly mindset as the Brabus ED, this matte-black and green bike is powered by a 500-watt electric motor. That’s twice as powerful as the motor on the standard Smart ebike available throughout Europe and North America, and Brabus also says that its version (somehow) weighs 10 percent less (somehow) than the Smart model. The ebike can reach speeds of 28 mph.
Both the Brabus Smart and the ebike will be available in 12 countries by the end of this year, although the U.S. will not be included.

Mercedes-Benz to Launch 2013 SL65 AMG in April [New York Auto Show]

Mercedes-Benz to Launch 2013 SL65 AMG in April [New York Auto Show]:
2013 Mercedes-Benz SL-class
Mercedes-Benz will introduce the new SL65 AMG at the New York auto show this April, we’ve learned. The company just took the wraps off of its new, sixth-generation SL this past January, so far showing the SL550 (pictured above) and SL63 AMG. (You can read our first drive of the SL550 here.) We’re delighted that an Affalterbach-tuned V-12 version will remain in the SL’s lineup—especially after hearing some rumors that the SL65 wouldn’t return.
The previous SL65 AMG utilized a 604-hp, 6.0-liter V-12 which cranked out 738 lb-ft of tire-melting torque. That engine was mated to a very robust five-speed automatic transmission that Mercedes-Benz has employed for eons. We don’t know whether the new SL65 will feature the same powertrain—in later installations in the S- and CL-classes, output was bumped to 621 hp—or if an upgrade will be made. After all, when equipped with the optional Performance package, the new SL63 AMG’s twin-turbo V-8 makes 557 hp and 664 lb-ft of torque. Mercedes says that the type of people that buy eight-cylinder Benzes are very different from 12-cylinder shoppers; because of that, we suspect the SL65′s power to stay at about the same level of the last car’s. (Also, because the 12-cylinder AMG models sell in such limited numbers, it is more difficult to justify the additional expense to overhaul the powertrain.)
Pricing should start in the $200,000 range. Deliveries of the SL65 and the V-8–powered SL63 are scheduled to start in July, while the SL550 lands a little earlier, in April or May.

2012 Honda Civic Natural Gas Tested: A Gasoline Alternative with Some Compromises

2012 Honda Civic Natural Gas Tested: A Gasoline Alternative with Some Compromises:
2012 Honda Civic Natural Gas
What Is It?
It’s a Honda Civic that runs on compressed natural gas (CNG). In fact, it’s the only factory-built CNG car in the country available to non-fleet customers. Exciting, right? Well, probably only if you live in one of the 35 states where the Civic CNG is available (that’s four more than the previous CNG Civic). But if you live where it’s sold, you might be glad to know that the EPA says that almost 87 percent of the natural gas used in the U.S. is produced domestically. And it burns cleaner than gasoline.

Rinspeed Shows Dock+Go Concept, a Smart ED with a “Backpack on Wheels” [Geneva Auto Show]

Rinspeed Shows Dock+Go Concept, a Smart ED with a “Backpack on Wheels” [Geneva Auto Show]:
Rinspeed Shows Dock+Go Concept, a Smart ED with a “Backpack on Wheels” [Geneva Auto Show]
Rinspeed makes a business of servicing and restoring exotic cars, but the company lets its freak flag fly every year at the Geneva auto show. Among the long list of insane Rinspeed creations are a submersible Lotus Elise, the SQuba; a Fiat Jolly–type car called the BamBoo; and the eXasis, a tubular-framed buggy with a see-through plastic body—including the floor. None, although they’re all incredibly cool, ever made it to production.
This year’s concept probably won’t make it to production, either. The Rinspeed Dock+Go is a Smart Fortwo Electric Drive made more practical by adding a “backpack on wheels,” a two-wheeled trailer that connects—or docks—to the rear of the Fortwo. Rinspeed imagines that this “dock” could be used to haul skis, carry camping equipment, or tote delivery items such as pizza.
Perhaps more practical is the proposed use of the dock as an extra battery to extend the Smart’s range. (The factory-baked range was increased as part of the Fortwo’s 2012 updates, which also were announced in Geneva.) Rinspeed also brings up the possibility of the dock housing a fuel cell, or perhaps an internal-combustion engine to extend the electric Smart’s range even more.
If a six-wheeled Smart strikes you as an odd idea, it’s no less strange than trying to fix the shortcomings of a Smart in the first place. (It’s apparently a popular pastime in Europe; Brabus also tinkered with the electric Smart this year.) But Rinspeed doesn’t really care; the company seems to revel in straddling the line between ambitious and foolish.

Chevrolet Releases Specs for 2013 Malibu’s Naturally Aspirated 2.5-Liter and Turbo 2.0-Liter Fours

Chevrolet Releases Specs for 2013 Malibu’s Naturally Aspirated 2.5-Liter and Turbo 2.0-Liter Fours:
2013 Chevrolet Malibu LTZ
You may recall that when Chevrolet announced its new 2013 Malibu sedan, it specified that the Eco mild hybrid version would launch first, followed later by two gas-only models. The Malibu Eco is at dealerships now, and Chevrolet has finally announced a few details surrounding the non-hybrid Malibu’s base, naturally aspirated 2.5-liter four, and available turbocharged 2.0-liter four—including power figures.
Turbocharged, Direct-Injection 2.0-liter Four-Cylinder
This engine pumps out a prodigious 259 hp and 260 lb-ft of twist. The bulk of the engine’s torque is available from 1700 to 5500 rpm. Not only does the 2.0-liter four pack more power than the outgoing 252-hp V-6-powered Malibu, but it should be even quicker than that car, too. Chevy claims the turbocharged Malibu can launch from 0-to-60 mph in 6.3 seconds; the last Malibu V-6 we tested did the deed in 6.5. The turbo will power the front wheels through a six-speed automatic transmission.
Chevrolet is calling the 2.0-liter turbo an all-new engine separate from the turbocharged four-pot that powers the Buick Regal Turbo and higher-output Regal GS. The company isn’t offering further details at this time, but we think it is likely a detuned version of the 2013 Cadillac ATS’s 270-hp turbocharged four. That engine is essentially a version of the Regal’s with the intake and exhaust positions flipped, plus a different turbocharger. The ‘Bu’s 2.5-liter four will pull duty as the base engine for the ATS, so it wouldn’t be outrageous to assume that the turbo four is a shared piece as well.
Naturally Aspirated, Direct-Injection 2.5-liter Four-Cylinder
The 2.5-liter four makes a healthy 197 hp and 191 lb-ft of torque, which places it among the strongest naturally aspirated four-cylinder engines in the mid-size segment. (The 2.5′s torque number leads the pack by a few lb-ft, but the Hyundai Sonata’s four-cylinder makes as much as 200 hp.) The engine produces 28 more hp than the last four-cylinder Malibu, and just three fewer ponies than it will in the Cadillac ATS. Like the turbo, the naturally aspirated four also will spin a six-speed automatic.
Chevy didn’t offer any fuel-economy predictions or pricing for either engine, but expect those to be available soon—the 2.5-liter Malibu goes on sale this summer, the turbo model in the fall.

Lotus F1 Team Evora GTE: 444 HP and Drenched in Carbon Fiber [Geneva Auto Show]

Lotus F1 Team Evora GTE: 444 HP and Drenched in Carbon Fiber [Geneva Auto Show]:
Lotus F1 Team Evora GTE
What would Kimi Räikkönen drive?
That may or may not be the burning question of the day, but the Geneva auto show provided an answer: On at least some occasions during 2012, the 2007 Formula 1 world champ will show up in an extensively carbon-fibered limited-edition Lotus Evora GTE.
The flying Finn unveiled the car at the show, and enthusiastically told the crowd, “I would love to have this as my company car!”
Räikkönen’s enthusiasm isn’t surprising. Lotus has resurrected his F1 career—for the coming season, at least. He’ll team with 2011 GP2 champion Romain Grosjean in the upcoming F1 season, one component in an ambitious 2012 Lotus racing program that also includes the Indy 500 and the World Endurance Championship.
Räikkönen’s ostensible company car, which also will be available to buyers—no racing credentials required, just bring money—sports unpainted high-gloss carbon fiber body panels, and extensive use of the same material inside, highlighted by copper-trim inlays. The black leather upholstery has gold piping, reminiscent of the livery of the 2012 F1 cars, which in turn pay homage to the John Player Special colors of the cars that carried Mario Andretti to the 1978 world driver’s title.
Andretti was the last driver to win the championship for Lotus, and that same season was the last time the company claimed the F1 manufacturer’s title.
The special-edition Evora GTE is more than mere trim. All that carbon fiber contributes to a curb weight that’s 220 pounds lighter than the standard car, according to Lotus, and various tuning tweaks help increase the output of its 3.5-liter supercharged V-6 to 444 hp.
The company calls it “the most powerful Lotus road car ever.” Combine most-ever power with reduced curb weight and you emerge with a strong prescription for quick.
Lotus plans to make the limited-edition Evora available to European-market buyers in May. No word on U.S. availability.

2013 Porsche Panamera GTS Driven: Behold, Porsche’s Cheesy Gordita Crunch

2013 Porsche Panamera GTS Driven: Behold, Porsche’s Cheesy Gordita Crunch:
2013 Porsche Panamera GTS
For years, Porsche has expanded its model lineups using the Taco Bell approach: same ingredients, different combinations. Take the new Panamera GTS, the eighth distinct version of  the big hunchback sedan. Porsche starts with a basic taco shell.  Actually, the Panamera is more substantial, more of a gordita. Then the company adds all-wheel drive. Think of that as the binding unguent in the GTS’s Cheesy Gordita Crunch—a layer of mellow reassurance in a world gone mad. Now add beef, the V-8 from the S model. (The Turbo engine would be the steak; the hybrid powertrain, the health-conscious but pricey chicken.) Finish with some Pepper Jack sauce, in this case a revised intake system, cams with one millimeter of additional lift, and the stiffer valve springs from the Turbo model. The changes lift output to 430 horsepower from the 4S’s 400.

V+ Volteis by STARCK: Legendary French Designer Puts His Stamp on an Electric Car [Geneva Auto Show]

V+ Volteis by STARCK: Legendary French Designer Puts His Stamp on an Electric Car [Geneva Auto Show]:
V+ Volteis by STARCK
French designer Philippe Starck has designed everything from toothbrushes to mega-yachts. Best known to Americans as the man who infused a dash of Euro style into ordinary household products for the retail giant Target, he’s now turning his streamlined Gallic vision towards the lowly automobile.
Officially named the “V+ Volteis by STARCK,” this electric car is a study in space-age minimalism. It will be produced in collaboration with Volteis, a French manufacturer of electric vehicles. Homey touches such as a front trunk made from a wicker basket and spaghetti-string deck chairs mingle with post-apocalyptic austerity; think if Martha Stewart had been employed as the set designer on The Road Warrior. Retail price of the vehicle as it sat on display in Geneva is estimated to be about $40,000.
No, you are not reading The Onion. The V+ is a fully realized electric vehicle, born, apparently, from Starck’s dissatisfaction with the current state of automobiles: “They’re noisy, dirty, anti-social, masochistic and they bring out the worst in people,” he says.
Thankfully, Starck didn’t let his strong opinions prevent him from borrowing some technology form the automotive status quo in the form of disc brakes and a strut-type front and trailing-arm rear suspension. Weighing around 1600 pounds, the front-wheel-drive vehicle is propelled by a 4-kW motor for a top speed of 40 mph and a quoted maximum range of 37 miles. The onboard charger can fully recharge the 11.5kWh battery pack in six hours from any standard (in Europe) 220-volt socket; charging the battery half-way takes two hours.
The steering column and wheel, chassis, and seat frames—the latter lovingly crafted by celebrated European outdoor-furniture manufacturer DEDON, natch—all employ aluminum for its structural and stylistic properties. A fabric roof and large windshield offer some semblance of protection to occupants; there are no plans to make doors available.
Despite his lofty ambitions and the V+’s considerable price tag, Starck has no delusions of the vehicle’s role in the automotive world: “It’s not a space rocket; it’s more like a kid’s soap-box cart with four wheels,” he says. Typical customers will be private individuals with vacation homes as well as island resorts that would offer the runabouts as a service to guests. “It’s zippy, and you have a little bell to warn people you’re coming,” says Starck. Basically, the V+ Volteis by STARCK is the Fiat Jolly reconfigured for the 21st century: less whimsy and more lunar rover.
The V+ will be sold through 15 stores in France and eventually make its way to outlets in other major cities worldwide.

Chevrolet to Build 69 New COPO Camaros for Drag Duty

Chevrolet to Build 69 New COPO Camaros for Drag Duty:
When we first encountered the Chevrolet COPO Camaro at the SEMA show last November, it was still technically a concept, but we reckoned Chevy would build it eventually. Our reckoning came true, with GM now announcing it will build a run of 69 drag-ready COPO Camaros. And with that, the Dodge Challenger Drag Pak and Ford Mustang Cobra Jet have some competition from the bow-tie brand.
The limited build is inspired in part by the original run of 69 1969 ZL-1–code COPO Camaros. Beginning this summer, GM will make the new-age Central Office Production Order Camaros available for competitors in the NHRA’s Stock Eliminator and Super Stock classes. Engines will be assembled at GM’s Performance Build Center in Wixom, Michigan, and buyers will have the option of getting their hands dirty by participating in the build, just like they can with some Vettes and Chevrolet Performance crate motors. All new COPO Camaros will be built using the same factory “body-in-white” shells that are available to racers under Chevrolet Performance part number 19243374. And if you don’t actually want a white one, four other colors are available: Flat Black, Victory Red, Silver Ice Metallic, and Ashen Gray Metallic
Three engines are available, selected specifically to conform to the NHRA’s class rules: an LS7-based naturally aspirated “427” V-8 (as is the case with the Z06′s version of the engine, this one actually displaces 428 cubic inches, or 7.0 liters for the metric-minded), and a pair of LSX-based 327-cubic-inch (5.3-liter) V-8s—one with a 2.9-liter supercharger, and the other with a 4.0-liter blower. For those with money and tires to burn, a special collector’s package bundles one Camaro with all three engines, your choice of which installed on delivery. Then again, those who tick that box likely won’t be driving theirs except into a hermetically sealed time capsule to be opened just before a collector-car auction in the year 2069.
Just to make sure no one gets any wise ideas about driving one of these ground-pounders down to the local Burger Clown in an attempt to separate a few naïve street racers from their wallets, GM offers the following statement: “The 2012 COPO Camaro is being offered as a performance part, with a specific part number (P/N 20129562).  It cannot be registered, titled, licensed, or driven on public roads or highways. COPO is specifically offered for off-highway, competitive NHRA use only.”
Prices start at $89,000.

2012 Renault Zoe Electric Hatchback Launched [Geneva Auto Show]

2012 Renault Zoe Electric Hatchback Launched [Geneva Auto Show]:
2012 Renault Zoe electric hatchback
Here’s an electric car that’s affordable and looks sort of cool: the Renault Zoe, which is priced at the pre-tax equivalent of $22,700 in Germany. There are, of course, additional costs: You also have to rent a battery pack, which will set you back at least a hefty (but probably heavily subsidized) $100 dollars each month. The actual price depends on the length of the lease and the miles you put on the car.
2012 Renault Zoe electric hatchback
Renault says the Zoe can go up to 130 miles on one charge, and that recharging takes just half an hour, although you need a 400-volt charging device to accomplish such quick replenishment. The standard model is optimized for extremely low energy consumption, while two upmarket trim levels will offer “multimedia and digital services,” as Renault somewhat cryptically promises.
The Zoe is sized like a subcompact Renault Clio, but it offers plenty of interior space as a result of its dedicated electric-vehicle architecture.
