Ford Cancels 7-Passenger C-Max for U.S., Will Sell Only 5-Seat Hybrid and Plug-In Models

Ford Cancels 7-Passenger C-Max for U.S., Will Sell Only 5-Seat Hybrid and Plug-In Models: "

Ford has announced it is no longer bringing a gas-powered, seven-passenger C-Max to the U.S., and will instead only offer the 2013 C-Max five-passenger hybrid and plug-in Energi hybrid starting in 2012. (Aww, and we’d already driven our C-Max. Sort of.) The now-canceled North American gasoline C-Max was essentially a European Grand C-Max without the “Grand” portion of the badge; it’s similar in size to the Mazda 5, features sliding rear side doors, and seats three in the second row and two in the way back. In contrast, the C-Max hybrids we’ll get, as well as the conventionally powered non-Grand C-Max models sold in Europe, seat just five and feature four conventional front-hinged side doors. All C-Maxes use a version of the Global C platform that underpins the 2012 Ford Focus.

Seven-passenger Ford C-Max

Ford says the idea is to give consumers a “dedicated body style for a range of Ford electrified vehicles” with the C-Max lineup, and that it felt a gas-fed seven-passenger C-Max didn’t present as strong a business case as did the expansion of the hybrids’ production capacity. Ford cites the C-Max hybrid and Energi’s popularity in Europe as reason to invest in amping up North American volumes. Furthermore, the company said it will produce up to five new electrified vehicles by 2012, including the electric Transit Connect, upcoming electric Focus, the C-Max pair, and a yet-unnamed “next-generation hybrid” to bow in 2012 (most likely a hybridized 2013 Ford Escape crossover). Since most of them share a platform, they can all take advantage of the additional factory capacity. All told, Ford wants to increase its hybrid and electric vehicle production volume to 100,000 units by 2013.

2012 Corvette ZR1 Goes Back to the ‘Ring for a Very Quick Shave

2012 Corvette ZR1 Goes Back to the ‘Ring for a Very Quick Shave: "

Carmakers make big claims about improved products all the time. For us, the proof of the pudding is in the eating (or driving), but a good stand-in is the Nürburgring lap video. While validating the upgrades it has made to the 2012 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 and Z06—specifically the former’s brake-based Performance Traction Management system and new Michelin Pilot Sport Cup run-flat tires—Corvette engineer Jim Mero turned in a stunning ZR1 lap time of 7 minutes 19.63 seconds on the ‘Ring’s famous Nordschleife, more than six seconds faster than the previous best of 7:26.4 set in a 2009 ZR1 also driven by Mero.

Fortunately for us, GM got the whole thing on video. That’s a lot of time to shave off of an already impressive time, so either Mero was taking it easy back in 2008, or those upgrades have had the intended effect. (Our guess is the new, more-supportive seats may have helped a bit.) Chevy also promises lap times for the Z06 soon, and we look forward to testing them both ourselves as soon as possible.

Volvo Developing Animal-Recognition Tech to Avoid Collisions with Wildlife

Volvo Developing Animal-Recognition Tech to Avoid Collisions with Wildlife: "

Volvos these days can automatically brake to prevent rear-end collisions and recognize and respond to humans walking across their paths. Now the company wants to extend the functionality of the latter system to recognize animals. Volvo engineers have to “teach” the system to detect and distinguish between different animals, with the initial focus being on nighttime functionality and recognizing larger species such as moose, deer, and reindeer, which pose a greater risk to a car’s occupants.

While a collision with a large animal is no laughing matter, we do find some of Volvo’s development methods amusing. For one data-logging mission, Volvo engineers drove slowly along a path that had been covered in food to attract deer and moose in order to record film sequences of the animals’ behaviors. The recordings will help Volvo program the system to detect the movements of various animals, but we can’t help but chuckle at the thought of slow-moving Volvos filled with engineers going all Discovery Channel cameraman on unsuspecting woodland creatures. Volvo wants to have the system production-ready within a few years, and hopes it will help reduce the more than 40,000 incidents involving animals every year in Sweden alone.

Cadillac Dealerships Getting Spiffed Up to Greet New Top-Shelf Models

Cadillac Dealerships Getting Spiffed Up to Greet New Top-Shelf Models: "

Cadillac’s products have shaped up pretty dramatically in recent years. Its dealerships? Well, not so much. Now, as the brand prepares for the arrival of the big XTS, and possibly an even larger ultra-luxe flagship, some 200 of its dealers across the country have committed to facility upgrades aligned with those found at Suburban Cadillac in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Designed by the world-renowned Gensler architectural firm, the new facilities will include limestone tile, glass facades, and lots of English Oak paneling inside, as well as matte porcelain tile, “theatrical” lighting, fancy Knoll Barcelona chairs, chrome, brushed steel, and, of course, coffee bars. Cadillac also is in its second year of a partnership with the Ritz-Carlton hoteliers to train sales and service personnel on the fine art of coercing money out of customers with a smile. All this comes while the CTS and SRX are enjoying sales success, but not a moment too soon if the larger, pricier offerings can hope for the same.

Hyundai Blue Link Subscriptions to Start at $79 a Year; System Debuts Next Week in 2012 Sonata

Hyundai Blue Link Subscriptions to Start at $79 a Year; System Debuts Next Week in 2012 Sonata: "

We previously brought you a complete rundown of Hyundai’s Blue Link cloud-based, voice-activated infotainment suite, and now the company has released subscription pricing for the system’s three tiers. It debuts in the 2012 Sonata, which goes on sale next week. The service will be offered in three tiers: Assurance, Essentials, and Guidance. Buyers get six months of Blue Link Assurance free, and three months of Essentials and Guidance before a paid subscription is required. The hardware remains the same no matter which level you have activated.

OnStar-like Blue Link Assurance will cost $79 per year. Blue Link Essentials adds voice capability for text messaging plus a mobile app that allows owners to remotely lock/unlock the doors and start the engine, share their location, and schedule services; the cost is $179 for a one-year subscription. Lastly, the Blue Link Guidance package adds navigation functions, weather and traffic, restaurant ratings, and voice-based point of interest search to all the aforementioned services for $279 a year. The package can be ordered in models without touch screens, too, with turn-by-turn directions being displayed via arrows on the standard audio display. Buyers can purchase two- and three-year subscriptions for a slight discount over buying single-year contracts. Furthermore, Hyundai will double the free service periods for the various tiers if you sign up for an automatic subscription renewal.

Hyundai demonstrated Blue Link to us recently, and while nothing about the interface is groundbreaking—Ford’s Sync system, for example, already has many of Blue Link’s features and functionality—we can say that it works very well, with excellent voice recognition and reasonably quick audible menus. The Blue Link Guidance touch screen is snappy, exhibiting none of the lag, business, or slow pacing of Ford’s MyFord Touch, and Hyundai kept the same graphics and intuitive menu layout as its current, non-Blue Link navigation touch screen. After the 2012 Sonata, Blue Link will next pop up in the Veloster before making its way into the better part of Hyundai’s lineup by 2013.

2013 Volkswagen CC Spy Photos: Swoopy CC to Get Bland VW Face

2013 Volkswagen CC Spy Photos: Swoopy CC to Get Bland VW Face: "

2013 Volkswagen CC spy photo

VW’s bland corporate face is headed for the swoopy CC.

When it was introduced for 2009, the Passat-based Volkswagen CC brought a sense of upscale fashion to its brand, the beauty of the Mercedes-Benz CLS for those on a Macy’s budget. (With the 2011 Sonata, Hyundai would then bring that style down to those on a Target budget.) But, based on these spy shots, it looks like the chic CC’s mid-cycle refresh will—unfortunately—include VW’s bland new corporate grille.

Honda Releases Video of Supercharged Mugen CR-Z Tearing Up Twisties

Honda Releases Video of Supercharged Mugen CR-Z Tearing Up Twisties: "

We previously brought you the goods on tuner Mugen’s de-boringified Honda CR-Z, which the shop supercharged to produce 197 hp, and now we have video of it scooting about some curvy blacktop. Even though the video is overlaid with a bumping techno rhythm, you can just hear the Mugen CR-Z’s exhaust note, which sounds much more purposeful than the standard car’s angry-vacuum drone. Honda UK’s YouTube video also describes the 0-to-60 time of an early Mugen CR-Z prototype in “mid-tune” as “around that of the Civic Type R.” You can watch the CR-Z—which we won’t be getting here in the states—tear up some European B-roads in the video below.

A 2000-Pound Mazda MX-5 Miata? Don’t Count On It

A 2000-Pound Mazda MX-5 Miata? Don’t Count On It: "

The Mazda MX-5 Miata offers one of the purest and most enjoyable modern roadster experiences—just look at how much fun these guys are having. Recently, rumors have been popping up that Mazda will add purity by drastically cutting the car’s weight in its next iteration, some suggesting a 2000-pound target, while others claim engineers are aiming for 1760 (that’s 800 kg). We asked Mazda for confirmation and were told “don’t believe everything you read.” We pass the same advice onto you. Except keep reading this, please.

The current Miata weighs around 2550 pounds, so such reductions would be, at best, difficult to achieve. Mazda’s own attempt at a lightened, current-gen Miata came in the form of the Superlight concept, which weighed a claimed 2200 pounds. And that’s without a windshield. Or a top. It also used copious amounts of carbon fiber and would therefore be prohibitively expensive.

As we understand it, the company hasn’t yet decided what form the next Miata will take. That said, Mazda has recently recommitted itself to improving efficiency with its new, lighter Skyactiv engines, and to add further lightness through the use of more high-strength steel. We can expect any MX-5 successor to be more fuel-efficient, and likely lighter, but expect a drop of 50 to 100 pounds rather than 500 to 800. While not quite as exciting, those figures are more realistic, and we wouldn’t mind if the Miata didn’t change much altogether.

The Continental: Opel Sale Rumors, Next Panamera and Possible Offspring, and More Three-Cylinders

The Continental: Opel Sale Rumors, Next Panamera and Possible Offspring, and More Three-Cylinders: "

The Continental

Each week, our German correspondent slices and dices the latest rumblings, news, and quick-hit driving impressions from the other side of the pond. His byline may say Jens Meiners, but we simply call him . . . the Continental.

In Germany, rumors abound on a possible sale of GM’s money-losing daughter Opel. GM’s denials are sort of lame. Some within Chevrolet’s European operations are watching Opel’s travails with glee. But a sale? A more likely scenario has the company downgrading Opel to an R&D center for Chevrolet and Buick products. The most likely scenario, however, is that GM CEO Dan Akerson wants to keep Opel but crank up the pressure on the ailing brand’s turnaround.

VW’s cooperation with Suzuki—the Germans own a 19.9-percent stake in the Japanese carmaker—is troubled. It’s being reported in Germany that Suzuki’s proposals for future common vehicles are not very well received in Wolfsburg. That confirms what I’ve gathered from my own VW Group sources over the past few months. “The cooperation could work better,” and, “The design proposals leave a lot to be desired,” are some of the kinder comments.

Porsche has built three electrically powered versions of the Boxster, which are used for various photo-ops with politicians and supposed to “gather experience.” Germany’s leading newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine now reports that Porsche collected the equivalent of over $4.1 million in subsidies. BMW collected almost $1 million for the development of an electric, folding bicycle—something that far smaller companies have achieved without subsidies. The Mini E experiment in Munich cost taxpayers almost $2.5 million. One of the results: The range of the electric drive is “sufficient.”

Chrysler is launching a new diesel engine for the Jeep Grand Cherokee. The 3.0-liter V-6 was developed by Fiat Powertrain and VM Motori and is mated to a five-speed automatic; it comes in two power and torque levels: 187 hp/325 lb-ft and 238 hp/406 lb-ft. Fuel consumption in the European cycle is 28 mpg. The same engine will be offered in the European-market Chrysler 300, which is rebadged as the Lancia Thema here.

German supplier juggernaut Bosch is witnessing a revival of interest in the diesel by U.S. carmakers even for the home market and registers a “tail wind” by U.S. secretary of transportation Ray LaHood. “The Americans are recognizing the value of diesel technology,” I am told by Bosch executives: “Diesels will happen, but with a significant delay that can be attributed to the financial crisis.”

2012 Porsche Panamera Turbo S

I’ve just driven the impressive Porsche Panamera Turbo S, and had the chance to speak with a few sources about future plans for Porsche’s big, four-door sedan. It will remain on a rear-wheel-drive platform; a derivative off Audi’s modular-longitudinal front-wheel-drive platform is out of the question. A more likely scenario will see a big Audi moving onto the next Panamera platform, which will also be used for future Bentley models, and could provide the basis for a four-door Lamborghini in the spirit of the Estoque concept car.

The next Panamera likely will lose the manual transmission currently offered on the naturally aspirated, rear-wheel-drive V-6 and V-8 models. While the U.S. is a “classic manual-gearbox market,” the take rate for the manual Panamera has been low—probably too low to justify a successor. The next Panamera will also receive electric power steering—for efficiency reasons.

Ford has confirmed a 1.0-liter three-cylinder engine for its B-Max compact minivan. Ford’s three-cylinder strategy is consistent and will be stretched across multiple model lines. VW and BMW will follow with their own three-cylinder engines, and Mercedes-Benz is working on threes as well.

Do they work? At the Boxberg, Germany, proving grounds, I just sampled a VW Passat powered by a 161-hp, 1.2-liter three-cylinder engine developed by supplier Mahle and force-fed by a single Bosch-Mahle turbocharger. The car’s performance was impressive; according to the Bosch engineer that accompanied me on my drive on the high-speed oval and the handling course explained that power equals that of a naturally aspirated 2.4-liter, while torque is on the level of a naturally aspirated 2.8-liter engine. I liked the 1.2: It emitted a sporty but subdued exhaustnote, acceleration was seamless from low rpm, and I reached over 120 mph with ease and some air to go. It’s the way to go.

Pictures of the Mini Coupe, slightly camouflaged, have been circulated by the manufacturer. The two-door coupe will be launched at the Frankfurt auto show, and the Mini Roadster will most likely be shown at the Geneva auto show next March. Both cars were still styled under former Mini chief designer Gert Hildebrand.

Ford Lets Fans Decide Fiesta WRC Roof Liveries on Facebook

Ford Lets Fans Decide Fiesta WRC Roof Liveries on Facebook: "

We recently brought you the result of a Citroën-sponsored roof design competition, and now Ford is challenging its rally fans to submit a Facebook vote for the best livery designs for the lids of its three Ford Abu Dhabi World Rally Team Fiestas. The team commissioned three unique designs for each of the three Fiestas (for a total of nine different designs). The design with the most Facebook “likes” for each Fiesta will grace that car’s roof during Rally Finland in July. So while not quite the same as the free-form roof-sticker design competition Citroën hosted, Ford’s Facebook voting puts the roof livery decision for the three cars in the hands of the fans, and we think that it’s a pretty cool way to get fans to participate. To cast your vote on the roof designs, head on over to Ford’s WRC Facebook page and weigh in.

550-HP Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 To Offer Automatic Transmission

550-HP Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 To Offer Automatic Transmission: "

2012 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1

At an owners’ event in Oshawa, Ontario, this past weekend, a spokesperson for General Motors confirmed that the über-Camaro, the ZL1, will be available with either a manual or an automatic transmission. When the car was revealed at the Chicago auto show this past February, it was shown with a manual.

The automatic will be the same unit used in the Cadillac CTS-V, which also lends its engine to the ZL1. It’s a robust six-speed torque-converter automatic, and in the Caddy, presents a nice alternative to a manual gearbox that’s not always smooth. Considering that the ZL1′s buyers are probably old enough to remember the original ZL1—which was sold only in 1969—the two-pedal setup is a smart move for keeping those customers happy.

As far as we know, the ZL1′s closest competitor, the Ford Mustang Shelby GT500, will remain stick-only.

It’s All Your Fault: The DOT Renders Its Verdict on Toyota’s Unintended-Acceleration Scare – Feature: "

The final word on the Toyota unintended-acceleration mess.

Earlier this year, the Department of  Transportation released the results of its study into the blizzard of reports that various Toyota and Lexus models were accelerating out of control. The DOT concluded that, other than a number of incidents caused by accelerators hanging up on incorrectly fitted floor mats, the accidents were caused by drivers depressing their accelerators when they intended to apply their brakes. “Pedal misapplication” was the DOT’s delicate terminology  for this phenomenon.

GT Academy Champ: From Racing Nissans in Gran Turismo 5 to the 24H of Dubai

GT Academy Champ: From Racing Nissans in Gran Turismo 5 to the 24H of Dubai: "

P1020685

53,000. 32. 16. 1.

The numbers represent Bryan Heitkotter’s quest, in sequence. An automotive enthusiast with a love for autocross, he was one of 53,000 competitors who entered the inaugural GT Academy driver search by playing Gran Turismo 5 for the Sony PS3 online.

From what amounts to the population of a medium-sized city, he became one of the 32 fastest gamers who moved on to Orlando, Florida to compete against each other over two days of intense virtual races. The number was whittled down to 16 (with Heitkotter the top point-getter) for the finals held at the historic Silverstone Circuit in England.

P1020668

At Silverstone, the competition went from virtual to reality when the GT Academy finalists competed for the first time in physical and behind-the-wheel challenges. Thanks to Sony’s partnership with Nissan, the competitors trained and competed in Nissan GT-Rs, 370Zs, and even the all-electric Leaf. In addition to the Nissans, the finalists drove open-wheel karts.

The experience was filmed for an upcoming reality show, with participants eliminated as the week progressed. For the final challenge, Heitkotter and three others raced around Silverstone’s GP track in 370Zs, Heitkotter emerging victorious after a heated battle. While we’d like to discuss the details of the final race or the week-long competition, we promised the video production team that we wouldn’t.

Fork in the Road

Heitkotter’s prize for winning GT Academy? The 30 year old gamer-turned-driver will be saying goodbye to his Fresno, California hometown to train for seven months at Silverstone and compete in European races. For his global debut, Heitkotter will drive a Nissan in the 24 Hours of Dubai in January 2012.

From 53,000 to 32 to 16 to one, Heitkotter beat the odds with determination and skill, changing the entire course of his life. Modest, shy and extremely talented, it couldn’t have happened to a nicer guy. We can’t wait to see Heitkotter’s career take off. In the meanwhile, watch Speed Channel in September of this year for full episodes of GT Academy.
