2012 Toyota Yaris SE Tested: Engaging Handling, Poor Driver Ergonomics
Where does driver comfort rank in the grand scheme of the automotive experience? Pretty high, we think, even if you’re spending less than $20,000 on what would otherwise be considered A-to-B transportation. And so we’re perplexed that Toyota seemingly overlooked the seating position in its new Yaris.3

2013 Buick Encore Crossover Mostly Unveiled Ahead of Full Reveal in Detroit
A few weeks ago Buick announced that it would bring a new small crossover, the 2013 Encore, to the Detroit auto show and released a single image of the car’s headlight. Since then, Buick has continued the teaser-image game with a section-by-section reveal on Facebook. Today, the automaker finally revealed enough of the car—three unimaginative puzzle pieces!—that we can pretty much see what it looks like.
The two-row Encore will be much smaller than Buick’s three-row Enclave, and as a result it looks like a squished version of its more elegant, larger sibling. The Encore will be smaller than even GM’s Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain twins, as the baby Buick will share a platform with the Chevy Sonic. We’ll be reporting live from the Detroit auto show next week, so check back then for the full story on (and the fourth quadrant of) Buick’s littlest CUV.
Horn Happy BMW Drivers
I don’t know what the reputation of Beemer drivers is your side of the pond, but over here they’re largely seen as brash and pushy: it’s the guys in a skinny wheeled 320d that will tailgate you in a rush to get past, even when you’re driving a car that’s demonstrably faster than theirs. And don’t even get me started on school run mums in their X6 with Tarquin and Annabelle on board.
Well it seems as if our suspicions are grounded in fact. A survey conducted by Onepoll for the webuyanycar.com website, of 2000 motorists revealed that 53 percent of BMW drivers admit to using their horn at least once on every trip, nearly three times the national average of 18 percent.
At the other end of the scale, Nissan drivers are the least likely to use their horn with 95 percent saying they never do or only as intended.
Other horn abusing drivers include: Jaguar (45 percent), Fiats (43 percent, although in Italy I suspect that figure is closer to 100 percent), Audis (39 percent) and, surprisingly, given their wooly sock and sandal image, Saab drivers at 29 percent.
The UK’s Highway Code says that drivers should only use the horn if the car is moving to warn other road users of their presence, nor should it be sounded aggressively or in a built-up area between 11.30 pm and 7.00 am unless a fellow road user is posing a danger.

Speed Hummers Battle Monster Minis – 2012 Dakar Rally
Photos by Willy Weyens
After three days of intense competition, the 2012 Dakar Rally is shaping up into an epic duel between the five diminutive Monster Energy X-raid Mini All4 Racing entries and the two Speed Hummers.
Today, Tuesday, at the finish of the third stage it initially looked as if Robby Gordon in the Speed Energy Hummer had taken the overall lead as he finished four minutes ahead of Frenchman Stéphane Peterhansel in a Mini, who had inherited the overall lead at the end of the previous day’s stage. However, once all the fastest cars had crossed the finish line, Krzysztof Holowczyc from Poland, in another of the Minis had grabbed the top spot overall, just 54 second in front of Gordon. Spaniard Nina Roma, in yet another Mini, was fastest on today’s stage.
On Sunday, Nasser Al-Attiyah in the Qatar Hummer and Gordon had set the initial pace on the first 36-mile long competitive stage in the sand dunes near the start in Mal del Plata, Argentina. Unfortunately, just a mile or so from the end of the stage Al-Attiyah’s Hummer came to a halt and would not restart. Luckily Gordon arrived a few minutes later and immediately towed the dead Hummer to the finish. Despite this early mishap Gordon finished just 30 seconds behind the stage winner, Leonid Novitskiy from Russia in a Mini. Meanwhile Al-Attiyah was only 10 minutes off the pace – no big deal this early in the rally.
The disappointing first day for Gordon’s small team didn’t last long though, as the second day’s 180-mile stage proved to be even more favorable to the large 2WD Hummers. It was a tough stage with many sand dunes and extremely rocky stretches that saw 23 of the initial 151 starters drop out. Despite starting in 38th position Al-Attiyah managed to claw his way past many slower cars to take the stage win. Gordon finished third, which moved him up to second place overall.
Of course it is far to early in the event to make any predictions as to the eventual outcome, but if the X-raid team of Minis and Gordon’s Speed Hummers keep their vehicles in ship shape condition, the drivers don’t drive too fast and their co-drivers don’t make too many navigational errors, the race to the finish could continue right up until the end – just as it did last year when Al-Attiyah took the checkered flag just 49 seconds ahead of Giniel De Villiers after 45 hours of competitive driving during 13 days.
If you would like to keep track of this epic rally in real time, check out the Dakar Rally website . You can also see what’s happening on the blog on Robby Gordon’s Speed Energy website or that of Toyo Tires , his tire sponsor. A daily summary of the Dakar Rally will be shown at 1.30 am ET (or 10.30 pm PT) each night on NBC Sports Network.

London Gets New Double-Decker Bus
After a brief flirtation with extinction, London’s iconic double-decker bus is staging a comeback. A bright red prototype of the next-generation model is now circulating the English capital, where it will soon be put into regular service. London Mayor Boris Johnson made bringing back updated versions of these classic buses a key issue during his election in 2008.
His predecessor, Ken Livingstone, had eliminated the charming but mechanically outdated Routemaster buses from all but a few key “heritage” routes in the city. Many are now more than 50 years old, making maintenance and fuel costs prohibitive. The new and improved double-decker should help address many of these problems when they begin service later this year.

For starters, a hybrid diesel-electric powertrain will dramatically reduce emissions and improve fuel mileage. The new double-decker, penned by British designer Thomas Heatherwick, also includes an open rear platform to make quick hop-on-and-off trips easier. Some critics had deemed the feature unsafe on the old buses. There are also three doors and two staircases to facilitate the loading and unloading of passengers.
An asymmetrical front window gives the new bus a modern face. Apparently, it’s much more than a design flourish. The wild front glass supposedly makes it easier for bus drivers to see the curb.
