GM Builds 100-Millionth Small-Block Engine

GM Builds 100-Millionth Small-Block Engine:

GM Builds 100-Millionth Small-Block Engine

Few would argue that GM’s small-block V-8 is one of the most famous engines ever. At least aside from some race engines, like the Offenhauser or Cosworth DFV.

When it made its debut in the 1955 Chevy lineup, the new V-8 engine was physically smaller, 50 pounds lighter and more powerful than the Stovebolt six. At the time Chevrolet believed it was not only a better engine for its cars, but it represented a better way of building engines, with a minimalist design that took advantage of streamlined production techniques.

The first 4.3L (265 cu. in.) engine in 1955 produced up to 195 hp with an optional four-barrel carburetor. Today, the LS9 6.2L (376 cu. in.) supercharged small-block in the Corvette ZR1 is rated at 638 hp, making it the most powerful engine ever installed in a regular-production Chevrolet or GM vehicle.

Did you know that the fuel-injected small block, introduced in 1957, became so dominant in NASCAR that it was banned?

Did you know that the small-block wasn’t known as the small-block until Chevrolet introduced the big-block engine family in 1965 – previously, versions were known simply by their cubic-inch designations, i.e. 283, 327, etc., or simply as the Chevy V-8.

GM Builds 100-Millionth Small-Block Engine

The fact that the small-block’s 4.4-inch bore centers – the distance from the center of one cylinder to the next – has not changed in the past 56 years is amazing. It was the dimension around which the Gen III small-block was designed in 1997. The small-block is currently in its fourth generation The small-block engine has been used in GM vehicles around the world and is found in global Chevrolet, GMC and Cadillac vehicles, as well as Vauxhall in the UK and Holden in Australia.

GM has also announced that the fifth-generation small-block under development will feature a new direct-injection combustion system that will help enhance efficiency over the current-generation engine.

And, yes the Gen V engine is guaranteed to have 4.4-inch bore centers that has been part of the small-block’s architecture from the beginning.

The 100th million small-block engine – a 638 hp LS9 — was hand assembled this week at the GM Performance Build Center in Wixom, MI. It will not find its way into a Corvette, but will be added to GM’s historical collection.

BRE Trailers, Built by Riley

BRE Trailers, Built by Riley

Pete Brock—of BRE Datsun and 1965 Shelby Daytona Coupe fame—has designed an aerodynamic all-aluminum race car trailer that he’s been selling to weekend racers, especially folks with vintage Porsches. Problem is, Brock has been unable to keep up with the demand. “By March of this year,” said Brock, “we had sold out our entire 2011 build capacity.”

So what does the famed designer do? He has turned to race car builders Riley Technologies of North Carolina to build them. It’s a bit of a challenge to build the semi-monocoque Aerovault, explains Brock, because it does not use conventional motor home construction techniques. In fact, its 1/8-in. aluminum skin is structural, and the trailer itself has more in common with a race car than a traditional trailer.

“For those reasons, no U.S. trailer manufacturers we approached were interested in building it” explains Brock. “From every perspective it’s a far superior trailer for users but it takes more time, requires more craftsmanship and consequently, costs much more to build. They didn’t have the skills nor understand the value. It was frustrating. Then a light bulb went off in my head when I saw Bill Riley at the Sebring race in March.”

“BRE approached us about building their trailers and we saw some good synergy”, said Bill Riley, Vice President of Riley Technologies. Added Ron McMahon, Vice President and CFO: “We’re an engineering company and it’s a well-engineered trailer. Where other manufacturers must have scratched their heads at the thought of fully skinning the underside of a trailer, we get it. I’ve towed trailers thousands of miles and as I went over every square inch of this trailer, I was impressed with all the well thought out details. We’re very pleased to be able to join BRE in satisfying the demand of car enthusiasts with yet another quality, well-engineered product.”

With the Aerovault’s aerodynamic efficiency and superb handling, Brock says a super-sized tow vehicle is not required. Fuel efficiency, naturally, is also a big concern. “Why tow around all this dead air space”, says Brock of traditional trailers.

Production of the Aerovault has begun at Riley’s facility in Mooresville, North Carolina, with trailers being delivered to their owners at the end of January.

For more information, view the Aerovault brochure at http://www.bre2.net.

This sedan concept called the FCV-R is powered by hydrogen, which Toyota says is a promising source of CO2 emission-free energy that can be produced by a variety of sources and can easily be stored and transported. The fuel cell is located beneath the body, allowing maximum space for its four passengers. The fuel cell stack, which consists of a 70 MPa high-pressure hydrogen tank, boasts a cruising range of about 700 km or more. Toyota says that the car is scheduled for production in 2015.

There was a special Volkswagen Beetle on display at the 2011 Tokyo Auto Show. It was a slick black, called the Fender Edition. Yes, that Fender. There are a number of Fender motifs all over the car, and we think it comes with a special guitar. In any case, this little Beetle rocks. If you want to read more about it, check out our article from the Frankfurt show here.
