Following the same theme as the other classic car entertainment GT350CR combines classic style with modern facilities such as rack and pinion steering, coilover suspension and disc brakes. Each car also has an output 545, 427 cubic inch V8 and in many parts authentic Shelby performance. No word on when the first cars will be delivered to customers, but Classic Recreations is in order with a starting price of $ 119,000 ask.

This is the sort of news story that can drive you crazy! Now I have written enough times on the speculation of a link between cell phone use and cancer for regular readers to know that I am not sure what to believe. Those same readers also know that main-stream media articles on almost any subject can drive me to pull my hair out. Actually it looks like I’ve pulled out a lot of it already and probably should find a new way of venting my frustration with these articles. So let me vent with this post!

USA Today recently published an article titled “Cellphones don’t increase cancer risk in kids, study says“. This article goes on and on about how researchers have shown that “using cellphones doesn’t increase children’s cancer risk. The article reads more like a press release from the cell phone manufacturers association than it does like an independent assessment of the study. Now maybe it is just poor writing in the USA Today article, but there appears to be either incomplete information in the article, or a total contradiction in relaying the results.

You can read the article and see for yourself but what caught my attention was this… After stating several ways to Sunday that there is no increased childhood cancer risk from cell phone use, there is this gem about 3/4ths of the way through the article:

In a subset of children, researchers found a higher risk of brain tumors in children whose cellphone subscriptions had begun more than 2.8 years ago.

What that means exactly I cannot tell. I read the abstract of the article but that “subset” is not addressed. To read the full study you either have to be a paying subscriber to the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, or buy one-day access to the study online. I did find a good summary of the study written by two epidemiologists but that also did not seem to directly address this subset of children who did have increased cancer rates.

COLUMBUS – Kids who use cell phones have no greater risk of brain cancer than non-users, according to a new study published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute . But parents shouldn’t breathe a sigh of relief, according to Joel Moskowitz, a director in the School of Public Health at the University of California-Berkeley. He’s reviewed the research and claims the results actually verify higher tumor risks for children, but those findings are down-played.

“They did report a number of significant associations between cell phone use, in terms of number of years of use, with brain tumor risk in children,” Moskowitz said. “And they try to dismiss those, as well.”

Another issue for parents to consider: Moskowitz said regular cell phone users in the study were described as those using a phone once a week for six months. He calls that frequency “barely even using a phone,” and in the U.S., usage by children and teens is much higher. The study was conducted in Denmark, Switzerland, Sweden and Norway.

The researchers did note that because mobile phone usage among kids has increased over the years, a careful watch on the trend is needed. Retired electronics engineer Lloyd Morgan has been doing just that and has himself written several reports on links between the radio frequency (RF) radiation exposure from cell phones and brain tumors.

He’s analyzed the newest report which, he said, like the highly-criticized Interphone study a year ago, considers radiation exposures not reflective of typical use, and therefore downplays brain tumor risk.

“They contradict their own conclusion when you read the paper. It isn’t what the abstract says it is.”

On a related RF radiation health safety note, several public health watchdogs, as well as the American Academy of Environmental Medicine, sent a request to Congress this week asking it to direct the U.S. Federal Communications Commission to update obsolete cell-phone tower safety regulations. The groups cite a growing body of science showing RF biological effects, such as links to cancer, and other health issues, including memory ability.

After years of speculation about the health hazards of mobile phone use, a panel of scientists at the World Health Organization reported on May 31 that they’ve concluded using cell phones may increase the risk of developing certain types of brain tumors. A working group of 31 scientists from 14 countries meeting at the WHO’s International Agency for Research on Cancer announced that their review of all the available scientific evidence suggested cell phone use should be classified as “possibly carcinogenic.”

While some scientists had previously warned about the dangers of cell phone use, the WHO study marks the first time a major health organization has made a connection between mobile phones and cancer. While the study does not definitively show that cell phone use increases the risk of cancer, the health implications are enormous considering that an estimated five billion people, nearly three-quarters of the world’s population, now use mobile phones.

As the WHO study has increased public concern about cell phone safety, the wireless phone industry has attempted to debunk the group’s warning by funding research of its own, which some critics have labeled as blatant propaganda. Between The Lines’ Scott Harris spoke with Devra Davis, founder and president of the group Environmental Health Trust, who discusses the importance of the World Health Organization’s report on the health hazards associated with cell phones and what can be done to reduce the risk.

Dr. Andrew Marino and his colleagues at Louisiana State University have just published a study proving the existence of electromagnetic hypersensitivity as an organic syndrome. They did a thorough medical workup on a subject (a female physician) who claimed to have EHS, and showed that she reacted within 100 seconds of being exposed to low-level pulsed electromagnetic fields with headache, muscle twitching, skipped heartbeats and other symptoms. This was a carefully designed double-blind test, repeated many times. Although the subject could not consciously perceive the field, her body reacted every time it was turned on. ABSTRACT

Objective: We sought direct evidence that acute exposure to environmental-strength electromagnetic fields could induce somatic reactions (EMF hypersensitivity).

Methods: The subject, a female physician self-diagnosed with EMF hypersensitivity, was exposed to an average (over the head) 60-Hz electric field of 300 V/m (comparable to typical environmental-strength EMFs) during controlled provocation and behavioral studies.

Results: In a double-blinded EMF provocation procedure specifically designed to minimize unintentional sensory cues, the subject developed temporal pain, headache, muscle-twitching, and skipped heartbeats within 100 s after initiation of EMF exposure (P < 0.05). The symptoms were caused primarily by field transitions (off-on, on-off) rather than the presence of the field, as assessed by comparing the frequency and severity of the effects of pulsed and continuous fields in relation to sham exposure. The subject had no conscious perception of the field as judged by her inability to report its presence more often than in the sham control.

Discussion: The subject demonstrated statistically reliable somatic reactions in response to exposure to subliminal EMFs under conditions that reasonably excluded a causative role for psychological processes.

Conclusion: EMF hypersensitivity can occur as a bona fide environmentally-inducible neurological syndrome.

Mobile or cellular phones are now an integral part of modern telecommunications. In many countries, over half the population use mobile phones and the market is growing rapidly. At the end of 2009, there were an estimated 4.6 billion subscriptions globally. In some parts of the world, mobile phones are the most reliable or the only phones available.

Given the large number of mobile phone users, it is important to investigate, understand and monitor any potential public health impact.

Mobile phones communicate by transmitting radio waves through a network of fixed antennas called base stations. Radiofrequency waves are electromagnetic fields, and unlike ionizing radiation such as X-rays or gamma rays, can neither break chemical bonds nor cause ionization in the human body.

Exposure levels

Mobile phones are low-powered radiofrequency transmitters, operating at frequencies between 450 and 2700 MHz with peak powers in the range of 0.1 to 2 watts. The handset only transmits power when it is turned on. The power (and hence the radiofrequency exposure to a user) falls off rapidly with increasing distance from the handset. A person using a mobile phone 30–40 cm away from their body – for example when text messaging, accessing the Internet, or using a “hands free” device – will therefore have a much lower exposure to radiofrequency fields than someone holding the handset against their head.

In addition to using “hands-free” devices, which keep mobile phones away from the head and body during phone calls, exposure is also reduced by limiting the number and length of calls. Using the phone in areas of good reception also decreases exposure as it allows the phone to transmit at reduced power. The use of commercial devices for reducing radiofrequency field exposure has not been shown to be effective.

Mobile phones are often prohibited in hospitals and on airplanes, as the radiofrequency signals may interfere with certain electro-medical devices and navigation systems.

Are there any health effects?

A large number of studies have been performed over the last two decades to assess whether mobile phones pose a potential health risk. To date, no adverse health effects have been established as being caused by mobile phone use.

Short-term effects

Tissue heating is the principal mechanism of interaction between radiofrequency energy and the human body. At the frequencies used by mobile phones, most of the energy is absorbed by the skin and other superficial tissues, resulting in negligible temperature rise in the brain or any other organs of the body.

A number of studies have investigated the effects of radiofrequency fields on brain electrical activity, cognitive function, sleep, heart rate and blood pressure in volunteers. To date, research does not suggest any consistent evidence of adverse health effects from exposure to radiofrequency fields at levels below those that cause tissue heating. Further, research has not been able to provide support for a causal relationship between exposure to electromagnetic fields and self-reported symptoms, or “electromagnetic hypersensitivity”.

Inspired by the Evora GTE race car, the Road Car concept features a race-developed engine that puts out more than 420 hp, a sequential manual gearbox, and ultra-lightweight forged wheels with center-lock hubs and Pirelli P-Zero Corsa tires. Other modifications include a ground-scraping front fascia, louvered air extractors in the hood, and a stand-up rear wing. Lotus claims the Evora GTE “isn’t merely a paint scheme or homage to a race car,” but rather “a serious race car that makes for a very serious road car.” Word.
