Exclusively for AvaxNews: Fake History Or Legend Of War-Firepower Modified

Exclusively for AvaxNews: Fake History Or Legend Of War-Firepower Modified: Ocean voyage

Do you think that history is a science? Well, not exactly. First, and foremost, history is the state's “legend of wars”, it’s official regalia. Of course, public historians are not interested in scientific truth – quite the opposite. In this respect, any attempt to present a state’s history as altruistic and benevolent as possible is welcomed and encouraged – as opposed to any revisionism attempts that may be more accurate. In this matter, Chinese have surpassed us all – they revised in highly creative manner (but rather shamelessly) the technology already invented by Europeans, a process that resulted in oldest state on the planet. Here is an interesting paradox: ask any sinologist about the Middle Kingdom during second century B.C., and he will describe it to you in such a vivid manner as if he has been living there all his life – but as soon as you will ask him to describe Chinese history in the 19-20th centuries… let's say, his eagerness will be greatly diminished. However, we will discuss China in a different article, and in the meantime we will try to understand how exactly historic “legend of wars” is formed and functions – based on a specific and well-known example. A great example is Ferdinand Magellan's first voyage around the world.

Face-Lifted 2013 Hyundai Genesis Coupe: 271-hp Four, 345-hp V6, Eight-Speed Auto

Face-Lifted 2013 Hyundai Genesis Coupe: 271-hp Four, 345-hp V6, Eight-Speed Auto:

Hyundai revealed its updated Genesis coupe on Facebook last week, but the cosmetics are just sizzle. The new fascia looks, uh, new, but the red meat is under the sheetmetal. At a relatively small event in Korea today, the company confirmed big updates to both the four- and six-cylinder powertrains.

The base 2.0-liter turbocharged four, an uncharismatic, gruff engine that previously offered just 210 hp and 223 lb-ft, is now good for 271 hp and 275 lb-ft. The change comes by way of a larger intercooler and a new twin-scroll turbocharger.

More exciting, the optional 3.8-liter V-6 gets a shot of steroids. This engine uses direct injection—its now functionally the same engine as in the 2012 Genesis sedan—and boasts 345 hp and 295 lb-ft. (These are increases of 39 and 29, respectively, over the coupe’s outgoing V-6.) Hyundai also claims it’s addressed one of our many complaints about the Genesis coupe: the gruff, unpleasant cacophony of the six. “In order to raise the emotional quality in the Lambda 3.8 GDi model, a sound generator is applied to replace the rough engine sound with a classy and sporty sound.” It’s a little unusual for an automaker to be so candid about a shortcoming like this, but the acknowledgement good news and we’re eager to see whether the “sound generator” is a special exhaust baffle or a set of Infinity speakers.

Both cars are now available with an eight-speed automatic transmission, a unit designed in-house by Hyundai. We hope it’s quicker-reacting in this application than it is in the Genesis sedan. Also on the gearbox front: The Korean-market press release for the new Genesis coupe makes no mention of manual transmissions, but we’d bank mortgage money on the company continuing to offer sticks in both cars here.

On paper, these are good, necessary updates. The engines always needed work, and the upgrades create more separation between this rear-driver and the upcoming 200-plus-hp turbo Veloster, which is FWD. But the biggest problem with the Genesis coupe, regardless of powerplant, is the punishing ride. We’ll have to wait until we can get behind the wheel to report on whether that’s been addressed. In the meantime, more pics should be coming from Korea soon. The U.S. debut is set for January’s Detroit auto show.

2012 Mercedes-Benz ML63 AMG Photos and Info: Twin-Turbo V8, As Much as 550 Horses

Presenting the next-generation ML AMG. Why? Just because.

If being politically correct is as appealing to you as driving a railroad spike through your foot—and you’ve got some bucks—you’re probably in the target demographic for an insanely powerful sport-utility vehicle. They’re wasteful and unnecessary—which is exactly the point. You don’t buy a hyper-powerful SUV for serious off-roading, and you don’t buy one to take it to the racetrack or conquer the Dragon. You also don’t buy one to celebrate Earth Day. You buy one just because.

Land Rover Bringing Slightly Altered DC100 Concepts to L.A. Auto Show

Land Rover Bringing Slightly Altered DC100 Concepts to L.A. Auto Show:

The two DC100 variants that Land Rover debuted at the 2011 Frankfurt auto show, a hardtop and the roofless Sport, mark the beginning of one of the company’s most difficult tasks yet: determining the shape of the next-generation Defender off-roader. Rover is bringing the two concepts to the L.A. auto show, but with a few subtle tweaks.

To that end, the yellow DC100 Sport now has a storage rack mounted to its rear deck. As for the DC100 hardtop concept, Land Rover painted it blue—but left the roof white, to better remind of the Toyota FJ Cruiser. It also gets rolling stock that looks a little more off-road-ready than the ridiculous big-wheel and low-profile-tire package it wore in Frankfurt. While such a small change makes the DC100 look a little more ready for the trail, both concepts are still a long way from the final shape of the Defender replacement. Gerry McGovern, Land Rover’s design director, tells us that these two mark “the beginning of a four-year journey” in search of the appropriate shape.

In-Depth with Lotus’s Electric-Vehicle Range Extender

In-Depth with Lotus’s Electric-Vehicle Range Extender:

With its Range Extender engine, Lotus Engineering is asking, “Why use a car engine in an EV?” The firm first showed off the powerplant in an Evora concept at the 2010 Geneva auto show and later announced it would produce the setup in partnership with Spanish automotive supplier Fagor Ederlan.

The idea is simple: If maximizing efficiency is the goal, then the device spinning the generator should be optimized for the task. First-generation range-extended EVs like the Fisker Karma use off-the-shelf engines that were designed to directly drive a car’s wheels, not to turn a generator. In the case of the Karma, this task falls to a turbocharged four-cylinder making an impressive 260 hp and previously employed in the Pontiac Solstice GXP, among other cars. You can imagine that such an engine is not at its best when making electricity. So how would you design an engine for the express purpose of making electricity?

Vertical orientation

If you are Lotus Engineering, you keep it simple. Both the range extender’s intake and exhaust manifolds are integrated into the cylinder head, which reduces the number of parts. There is no variable valve timing, which adds weight, cost, and complexity. The generator housing is mounted directly to the block, which increases stiffness and reduces vibration. And the engine is optimized to run at low speeds, with a long, 95.5-mm stroke.

The 1.3-liter inline-three’s final output figures (they’ve varied slightly throughout its development) are 51 or 74 hp, the latter with the addition of a supercharger. Both power peaks occur at 3500 rpm. Peak torque is 79 or 111 lb-ft, both at 2500 rpm. The generator in Lotus’s example (automakers could alternatively use their own unit) puts out 35 kilowatts with the naturally aspirated engine and 50 kilowatts with the supercharged unit.

The numbers might not seem too impressive, but consider the size of the engine: just 20.1 inches long, 16.9 inches wide, and 24.0 inches tall with the generator attached. That’s about the size of two pieces of carry-on luggage, and it weighs between 112 and 128 pounds. Lotus also designed the engine to work on its side with only minimal design changes. In this configuration, it’s small enough to fit under a seat. Although we find that scenario unlikely—it might get a little hot—we won’t be surprised at all if we see this engine in a production car somewhere in the world.

2013 Ford Mustang Boss 302 Does Its Best Impression of the 1970 Model, Gets New Color Schemes

2013 Ford Mustang Boss 302 Does Its Best Impression of the 1970 Model, Gets New Color Schemes:

Set your time machine to 1970. Mirroring the differences between the 1969 and 1970 originals, the changes Ford makes to the 2013 Mustang Boss 302 will be mostly cosmetic. We’re okay with that, since we called both the original and its 2012 redux the best-handling Mustangs Ford had produced yet.

Differentiating between the 2013 and 2012 will be just like separating the 1970 Boss from the 1969. The first-year cars wear C-shaped side striping and large black-out hood panels, while the 1970 and 2013 have “hockey stick” side markings and a center stripe on the hood. Like those on the original Boss, the 2013’s decals will be reflective.

Along with the rest of the Mustang lineup, the Boss gets revised front and rear trim for 2013. Those are functional vents on the bulgier hood, which terminates at a larger, more-GT500-esque grille. Whereas last year’s in-grille fog-lamp covers were molded in and just for looks, the 2013 piece has removable caps that open up to provide better engine cooling. They’re flanked by standard HID headlight units, which have faux slats that recall the outboard vents on the 1970 model. The taillights now are recessed into the sheetmetal, with LED surrounds and a gloss-black panel bridging them.

As another nod to the car’s past, Ford will offer School Bus Yellow paint that matches the color on Parnelli Jones’s 1970 Trans-Am championship car. Color options for the regular Boss 302 include that hue, Grabber Blue, Gotta Have It Green (which we’re told is an electric/neon shade), Performance White, and Race Red. The Laguna Seca will be available in SBY or black, both of which will have gray-trimmed spoilers, mirror caps, grilles, wheels, and interior cross-braces instead of last year’s garish red accents. Both the Boss 302 and Laguna Seca lose their contrasting-color roofs for 2013. We’re okay with that, too.

There are no chassis or powertrain changes for 2013, which, again, is just fine with us. Sync, which wasn’t available in last year’s Boss, is now standard. A wrench to remove the side-exhaust restrictors is not, but it’s the only entertainment-system-adjustment tool required in the Boss. It produces this sound. You’re welcome.

The current Boss 302, like the original, will only have a two-year run; 2014 will bring a new Mustang to coincide with the car’s 50th anniversary. That does, however, pave the way for a Boss 351 in the future. We’d be cool with that.

Ford ladles out another helping of 100 horsepower and creates its beastliest Mustang ever.

Occupy Horsepower seems to be the sentiment at Ford these days as the Blue Oval seeks elite output for everyman. Earlier this year, we told you the next GT500 was going to produce north of 600 hp, but even we weren’t prepared for the 650 hp and 600 lb-ft of torque announced as the car debuts at the Los Angeles auto show. Is that “God Bless America” we hear?

World Premiere of BMW ActiveHybrid 5 – 2011 Tokyo Auto Show

World Premiere of BMW ActiveHybrid 5 – 2011 Tokyo Auto Show:

World Premiere of BMW ActiveHybrid 5 at 2011 Tokyo Motor Show

Is this another sign the global auto market is reviving – BMW has chosen to unveil its new ActiveHybrid 5 sedan at the Tokyo Auto Show next month, rather than in Europe or the U.S.

The full-hybrid 5 has a six-cylinder in-line gasoline engine, an electric drive system, an eight-speed automatic gearbox and a high-performance lithium-ion battery. This combination allows BMW’s third hybrid model to be driven on purely electric power around town. It also offers drivers a boost function for added acceleration. As another aid to economy, and usage of kinetic energy for battery regeneration, the car can coast with the engine switched off, when appropriate, at speeds up to 100 mph. BMW says the ActiveHybrid 5 also comes with a unique intelligent energy management system, which works in tandem with the navigation system to prepare the car’s drive functions in advance for upcoming road conditions.

World Premiere of BMW ActiveHybrid 5 at 2011 Tokyo Motor Show

The 305 hp in-line six-cylinder engine is the same one used in the BMW 535i. When combined with the 55 hp electric motor the total power output is rated at 340 hp. This is sufficient to take the car from 0-100 kph (0-62.5 mph) in 5.9 seconds, according to BMW. Average fuel consumption is around 35 mpg.

The car can be driven purely on electric power at speeds up to 37 mph. At this time BMW has not disclosed its range when running off the battery. Nor for that matter has it disclosed the car’s price.

Aside from a small badge on the C pillar and door sills, along with galvanized slats on the kidney grill and matt chrome tail pipes, there little to visually distinguish the ActiveHybrid 5 from a regular 5 Series. Optional 18-inch Streamline-design alloy wheels and a unique Bluewater metallic paint are offered for those who want to make sure their ActiveHybrid 5 looks different from their neighbor’s ordinary 5 Series.

Dacia Lodgy MPV Tackles the Trophée Andros

Dacia Lodgy MPV Tackles the Trophée Andros:

Dacia Lodgy

This is going to take some explaining.

For those of you who don’t know, Dacia is Renault’s bargain basement sub-brand based in Romania. It used to build cars of questionable quality, including reworked Renaults until it was acquired by the Regie in 1999.

It now sells products based on Renault technology, mainly for its home market but, increasingly, for export to other European countries.

Dacia Lodgy

The Lodgy is the name given to a new MPV that Dacia will display at the Geneva Auto Show next year and, according to the press release “evokes notions of generous interior space and the importance of family.” It also rhymes with ‘dodgy’ which is far more appropriate.

Finally, the Trophée Andros is a hugely popular series of ice races held on Alpine race tracks and, although it attracts entries from manufacturers outside of France, it is dominated by French drivers and is about as international as NASCAR.

And it attracts big names: the dodgy Lodgys will be driven by former F1 champion, Alain Prost accompanied by his son, Nicolas (obviously not in the same car) and last year’s joint winner, along with Prost, Evens Stievenart.

Dacia Lodgy

Custom-prepared by the teams at Tork Engineering (design, production, assembly) and Sodemo (engine), the Lodgy Glace (which makes it sound like a dubious ice cream sundae) benefits from the full expertise of Renault Sport Technologies (RST).

The final takes pales in the Stade de France, Paris, frozen over especially for the event.
