Mopar’s JK-8 Kit Converts Your Jeep Wrangler Unlimited to a Pickup for $5499

Mopar’s JK-8 Kit Converts Your Jeep Wrangler Unlimited to a Pickup for $5499: "

Chrysler’s Mopar division previewed its Jeep JK-8 pickup bed conversion for the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited a few months ago at the annual Moab Easter Jeep Safari, and now Jeep pickup enthusiasts can purchase the kit that converts their four-door Wrangler to a modern Scrambler for $5499, installation not included. With the least-expensive Wrangler Unlimited, the air-conditioning-free Sport trim, starting at $26,345, this means that it’ll run you nearly $32,000 for a Wrangler pickup—and that’s not counting the time or cost of the actual conversion.

The kit consists of new body panels that make up the pickup bed, a new bulkhead behind the front seats, new B-pillars, roll bar extensions, and a removable fiberglass roof. The installation is a bit more than a simple plug-and-play affair, and requires several spot welds in the body to be cut (along with the B-pillars and portions of the existing roll bar), and the kit’s new body panels to be welded in place and painted. At Mopar’s April unveiling of the JK-8 kit, the company said that it might offer a simpler, “backyard bolt-in” kit, and apparently that easier-to-install option has been shelved.

Despite the reasonably involved installation process, Mopar seems confident that a motivated do-it-yourselfer could feasibly execute the conversion. For the less daring conversion buyer, the kit can be installed at any Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge, or Ram dealership; with this much welding and bodywork, however, it might be wise to find a dealership with a decent body shop. Perhaps the kit’s best attribute—besides the fact that the conversion creates a Jeep with a pickup bed—is that the whole shebang is warranted for three years/36,000 miles, and it is available now through any Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge, or Ram dealership. If you want to see the JK-8 in action, head over here.

Recently landing on my desk—with a thud that sounded like a minor car crash—was a copy of the Shelby American Automobile Club’s updated registry of all known Shelby GT Mustangs from ’65, ’66, and ’67. It weighs six pounds, includes 1315 black-and-white photos, spans 1350 pages, and costs $200, plus $20 for shipping (www.saac.com). When the book fell on my desk, it caused both me and a cup of coffee to leap half an inch.

Former GM vice-chairman Robert Lutz recently plunged into a milling crowd in front of the SVA (School of Visual Arts) Theatre in lower Manhattan’s Chelsea neighborhood. Car2Go Announces All-Electric Car-Sharing Program in San Diego

Car2Go Announces All-Electric Car-Sharing Program in San Diego: "

2011 Smart Fortwo Electric Drive

Car2Go, a car sharing enterprise similar to Zipcar, has announced that by the end of the year, its San Diego fleet will be all-electric, packed with 300 Smart Fortwo Electric Drives. For a refresher on how car sharing generally works, read our rundown of Zipcar here. It must be noted that Car2Go differs from Zipcar by offering “free-floating” car rentals, which means members can take a car anywhere they please and simply leave it there—no need to return the car to a specific location by a specific time. The company’s telematics tech lets members know which cars are available and where, and its automated rental process makes nabbing a nearby car a snap.

What isn’t clear at this time is how Car2Go plans to handle the task of recharging its fleet of “free-floating” electric Smarts. Typically, car sharing companies include a gas card in the glovebox for refueling the cars, but charging a car is a bit more time-consuming than filling up with dino juice—and did we mention the electric Smart has a sub-100-mile range? Car2Go plans to release the specific charging process soon, but for now it has revealed that regardless of who is tasked with charging the cars or how the cars make their way to charging stations, they will make use of Blink EV charging stations around the city of San Diego. Hopefully easing the charging situation, Blink plans to have around 1000 public charging stations operational by the end of 2011.

Mercedes-Benz Grosser 600

In Wisconsin, Karl Middelhauve keeps Mercedes-Benz’s dictator specials running.

In 1966, Karl Middelhauve bought a Mercedes-Benz 300SE. When its engine blew up on Germany’s autobahn, he had AMG install the 6.3-liter V-8 from a Mercedes 600 “Grosser” limousine. It was the beginning of a lifelong obsession. In the decades since, Middelhauve has become an internationally recognized 600 authority. The car long favored by celebrities and heads of state—from John Lennon to Idi Amin—is now catered to by a quiet, one-man operation in Wausau, Wisconsin. Just less than 2700 600s were built from 1964 to 1981, each with an air suspension and a complex hydraulic system powering everything from the windows to the cowl vent. Middelhauve has worked on or restored more than 200 of them. His shop, an 11-bay pole barn jammed with 19 6.3-liter V-8–powered vehicles, is a treasure trove of Grosser gold. We headed deep into cheese country  for a closer look.

Two reminders that great things can still come in big packages.

If we made a list of unforgettable cars of the previous decade, the first-generation Chrysler 300 SRT8 and Dodge Charger SRT8 would be on it. They were nutso full-sizers with 425-hp, 6.1-liter Hemis; aggressive looks; and chest-thumping exhausts. Those qualities earned them a pass for their shortcomings—which included occasionally crashy suspensions, plasticky interiors, turret-like outward vision, and a five-speed automatic transmission that could have used an additional ratio (or three).

Chrysler Prices New SRT8 Models; 300 SRT8 From $47,995, Charger SRT8 Starts at $46,620

Chrysler Prices New SRT8 Models; 300 SRT8 From $47,995, Charger SRT8 Starts at $46,620: "

The raft of new Chrysler products that hit dealer lots this year—the Chrysler 200 and 300, Dodge Avenger and Charger, and Jeep Grand Cherokee—are, on balance, an impressive menagerie of metal. The improvements that the vehicles needed were mostly made, and we’re left with a collection of good products. But what’s missing? The maniacal power from the company’s SRT-badged models. The Dodge Charger SRT8, Chrysler 300 SRT8, and Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 debuted at auto shows this past spring, and the Real Executives of Auburn Hills have now set pricing and arrival dates for the hulking trio. All three should hit dealers “late in the third quarter,” which sounds to us like it means the end of August or early September.

The Dodge Charger SRT8 is the least-expensive in the group, with a sticker of $46,620. Should you require the posh cabin and uptown styling of the 300 SRT8, the tag will start at $47,995. And, for the privilege of driving an all-wheel-drive SRT8 vehicle, the Grand Cherokee SRT8 will pilfer your bank account for $55,295.

None of these vehicles can be characterized as cheap, even if they represent good values versus competitors. A Ford Taurus SHO overflowing with options can cost as much as $45,690, and doesn’t offer the rear-wheel-drive dynamics of the Charger or 300. There are also about a million less-powerful German and Japanese competitors in the $40-$50,000 price range, and whether the Chrysler trio can offer a real alternative, only a Car and Driver comparison test can say for sure.

You can read more about Chrysler’s trio of hooligans in our first drive reviews of the Charger SRT8, Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8, and Chrysler 300 SRT8.

2012 Volkswagen Beetle First Drive: No Longer a Chick Car

2012 Volkswagen Beetle First Drive: No Longer a Chick Car: "

2012 Volkswagen Beetle

Now that the New one is gone, we’re just going to say it: It was a chick car. Was.

Throughout its 73-year history, the VW Beetle has embodied VW’s “people’s car” philosophy, the original Type 1 becoming more than 21 million people’s car before production finally ceased in Mexico in 2003. It was only during the 12-year term of the New Beetle—introduced in 1998 and discontinued after the final 2010 models—that those people became, by and large, female. In its peak year, the Beetle sold more than 80,000 copies in the U.S., roughly 75 percent of them to women, based on our observation. (The other 25 percent going to very effeminate, very confident, or completely oblivious men.) If VW is to make its goal of moving 800,000 cars in the U.S. by 2018, even a percentage of the 83,434 Beetles sold here in 1999 would be a helpful number to add back into the sales charts.

The Continental: Some Insight into GM from Opel’s CEO, VW Tidbits, and the Silvretta Rally

The Continental: Some Insight into GM from Opel’s CEO, VW Tidbits, and the Silvretta Rally: "

The Continental

Each week, our German correspondent slices and dices the latest rumblings, news, and quick-hit driving impressions from the other side of the pond. His byline may say Jens Meiners, but we simply call him . . . the Continental.

Opel CEO Karl-Friedrich Stracke says his company will end up ahead of current planning for 2012. The company is aiming for a market share of 10 percent, up from 7.6 percent in 2010. That would be half of what Opel enjoyed in the early 1970s, when the company even surpassed VW on the German market, but still a remarkable achievement. Simultaneously, Stracke wants to grow European market share from 6.2 percent to 8.5 percent. “I am not patient,” he says. He confirms that Opel wants to push for exports—but without directly competing with Buick.

On the Opel-Buick relationship, Stracke tells me that Buick wields quite a bit of influence on the design. “But ultimately, we deliver and Buick accepts the product, and they are happy with that.” As the Opel and Buick model lineups converge, the distance between Opel and Chevrolet—which is still uncomfortably small with the nearly identical Ampera and Volt—will grow: “We aim for greater differentiation between the brands.” How? “Our new image is better than Chevy’s,” he says in forthright terms. “I don’t see overlap. They compete with the Koreans, we compete with Ford and VW.”

Stracke acknowledges the importance of the SUV market and says that Opel will get a small SUV and a bigger one—the latter is set to replace the Antara, which was offered as the Saturn Vue in the U.S. and was supposed to be rebadged as a Buick before Mark Reuss cancelled the project. Opel enjoyed great success in the SUV segment in Europe in the 1990s with the Frontera, a rebadged Isuzu Rodeo/Amigo, and has since lost its market position.

Do six-cylinder engines, such as the Insignia’s 2.8-liter turbo, have a future at Opel? Stracke won’t say yes or no, but he says that a turbocharged 2.0-liter four could produce up to 350 hp. In fact, a mule of GM’s 2.0-liter Ecotec engine with two-stage turbocharging approaches the performance of a naturally aspirated 5.3-liter V-8. It could be an option not just for performance sedans, but also for SUVs and trucks.

Opel is toying with the idea of an upmarket vehicle positioned above the Insignia. But it won’t be a luxury sedan like the Opel KAD series (Kapitän, Admiral, Diplomat) of the 1960s and ’70s. “It would have a flexible interior,” says Stracke, and it would likely be a crossover SUV model with six or seven seats. The powertrain? Probably a hybridized four. And despite its size, it won’t be developed by Holden.

Tidbits from the VW Beetle Launch

The U.S. market is the most important for the Beetle, and virtually every part comes from the U.S. or Mexico. In the future, transmissions will be built in the U.S. as well. On the road, the suspension is firm, the exhaust sound isn’t as great as VW claims, and the dual-clutch transmission is way too eager to upshift. You can read our first drive for full impressions and details.

VW wishes to change buyer demographics, which are now well over 50 percent female. In fact, this Beetle looks a lot sportier, almost Porsche-like, but I was surprised by a goofy detail: below the glass cover, the headlights are capped by eyelids. There’s a nod to the “flower vase” crowd.

Another Rally

Speaking of which, I was invited to co-drive the Silvretta Classic rally last weekend in a 1979 1303 Cabriolet, a perfect car from VW’s collection, with a sharper engine that had no trouble negotiating the mountain passes in Austria’s state of Vorarlberg. At the wheel was Wolfgang Juri of Vorarlberg’s economic chamber, so I had a perfect local guide. In terms of performance, the 1303 was a major step down from the Ferrari Dino 208 GT4 which I drove at the Kitzbühel rally a few weeks ago, but it was just as much fun in its own way. Moreover and unlike the Ferrari, it didn’t break down. Overall victory was taken by race driver Isolde Holderied in a 1982 Toyota Land Cruiser; the Silvretta electric-vehicle rally, which took part simultaneously, albeit over a far shorter distance (don’t you wonder why), was won by Audi’s Franciscus van Meel in an A1 e-tron with an electric motor and a rotary range-extender engine.

The most interesting part of the rally was meeting the designers. Ford’s Martin Smith and Mazda’s Peter Birtwhistle shared a cockpit; Kia chief designer Peter Schreyer drove with former Mini chief designer Gert Hildebrand; Austrian designer Achim Storz and Audi’s Stefan Sielaff were present as well. Germany’s attorney general, Sabine Leutheusser-Schnarrenberger, participated in an early-1970s Mercedes. It’s good to have politicians who enjoy cars.

Volkswagen is Not Planning to Sell a Passat Wagon in the U.S.

Volkswagen is Not Planning to Sell a Passat Wagon in the U.S.: "

Despite the unabashed public appearance of a camo-draped Volkswagen Passat wagon on American soil, the company is not planning to offer such a vehicle for sale here, we’ve learned from company sources. The car seen in testing is headed for the European market, and is just undergoing some development in the States, as is common practice among automakers. With an abundance of engineering firms, suppliers, and rain-free and hot climes here, the U.S. frequently attracts cars that will never reach our dealerships. This is the case with the Passat wagon.

Other than Subaru’s offerings, wagons in the family segment have become deeply unpopular, and Volkswagen discontinued the Passat wagon after it repositioned the sedan in the U.S., dropping the base price by nearly $8000 and going after the mid-size market’s biggest players. With a renewed focus on achieving big sales numbers, Volkswagen doesn’t see a new Passat wagon as an effective use of resources.

With all of this said, we already know that Volkswagen is working on a three-row crossover, priced like a Honda Pilot or Ford Explorer at or near $30,000. Since that is precisely the category to which former wagon buyers have shifted in the U.S., it’s the right product for VW and makes way more business sense than does a Passat wagon.

Factory-Backed Lotus Sport USA Racing Team Formed

Factory-Backed Lotus Sport USA Racing Team Formed: "

If you feel like Lotus has been making an increased amount of noise in motorsports activities lately, we’re right there with you. It doesn’t hurt that both Group Lotus—the people who build the road cars—and Team Lotus—the guys who race in F1 with Renault—are both so active. But if you’re also sad that all the fun seems to be happening across the pond, we’re happy to tell you that better days lie ahead. Today, Group Lotus announced the formation of Lotus Sport USA, a team that will launch with a full International Motor Sport Association (IMSA) schedule with the Evora GTE in 2012.

Two men in particular are responsible for Lotus’ new presence in the States. The first team principal, Ian Dawson, worked with Team Lotus in the early ’70s before leaving to help launch Rebaque F1, racer Hector Rebaque’s short-lived team that raced Lotus chassis with Ford engines in 1978 and 1979. It’s still both the only Mexican team and the only Lotus privateer team to run F1. The second team principal, John Pritzlaff, is the money man. Lotus hopes his banking background will “bring structure and oversight to the racing program.” Lotus motorsports director Claudio Berro continues, “With Ian Dawson and John Pritzlaff on board, I’m sure Lotus Sport USA will go from strength to strength.”

The team’s full intentions are still hazy, but we’re told the focus will be on the GT2 and LMP2 classes of IMSA, with the Evora GTE starting things off in GT2. An official press release promises “the team will be announcing some innovative and exciting new partners to the program, including key personnel to support this long-term partnership.” We wouldn’t be surprised to see a big name or two jump at the chance to help Lotus’s first official Stateside racing organization. Headquarters for the team will reside at the North Carolina Center for Automotive Research and testing will begin in the fourth quarter of this year.

Jeep Developing a Compact Crossover to Challenge the Mini Countryman

Jeep Developing a Compact Crossover to Challenge the Mini Countryman: "

2011 Jeep Patriot - This is not the new model

Jeep’s upcoming B-segment crossover will be positioned squarely against the Mini Countryman, according to sources within Fiat and Chrysler. The baby Jeep, which is being referred to internally as the “SS”—that stands for super small or super sport, and we can guarantee it’s not going anywhere on a production vehicle—will be even smaller than the current Patriot and Compass.

Chrysler’s engineers are busily preparing the vehicle, which will roughly match the dimensions of the Countryman, and we understand that management insists that the SS pack the off-roading capability that shoppers expect from something with the seven-slat grille. Even if the SS isn’t plastered with “Trail Rated” badges, that means it likely will need more ground clearance than the Countryman’s 5.9 inches.

Design and engineering for this new wee Jeep are being spearheaded out of Detroit—even though, like the Patriot and Compass replacement, it’ll be based on a Fiat-sourced compact platform—but the Italian teams are becoming more and more involved. The Europeans do, after all, have more expertise in making the most of small vehicles. We are hearing there are two competing ideas for the SS’s design. One school of thought is to make the SS rounder and, in a sense, emulate the Countryman’s shape. The other school proposes a boxy design, more similar to Jeep’s own Wrangler. A similar debate took place when the Compass and Patriot were being developed, although both were given the green light in the end. Chrysler will settle on a final design for the SS relatively soon—and this time, only one design will get the nod.

Like the Compass and Patriot, the SS will be offered with either front- or all-wheel drive, and the two-wheel-drive version is likely to have an electronic brake-based system that simulates a differential to help traction in the muck. We’ve also learned that the cheaper front-wheel-drive model could use a simple and cost-effective torsion-beam rear suspension, while the four-wheel-drive SS should get a multilink setup.

With Tiny Car Comes Tiny Power

Being a compact vehicle relying heavily on a Fiat-sourced platform, the Jeep SS will draw on Fiat’s powertrain department for motivation. The most likely choice is Fiat’s 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine with MultiAir; in the Fiat 500, this engine is good for only 101 hp, so we expect that if this engine is selected for the SS, it’ll pack a turbocharger and produce between 130 and 170 hp. Outside the U.S., the SS could receive Fiat’s new 875-cc, two-cylinder TwinAir engine with about 100 hp on tap. We’ve also learned that the baby Jeep could pack Chrysler’s upcoming ZF-designed nine-speed automatic gearbox. (As we previously reported, this transmission is specifically being developed for cars with transversely mounted engines, and will appear in the next-generation compact Chrysler and Fiat vehicles.)

We expect that the Jeep—whatever it’s eventually called—will hit the market in the second half of 2013. Fiat and Chrysler will have big expectations for its success; it’ll be the smallest Jeep yet, and the most fuel-efficient, too. Considering how well the Countryman has done for Mini, we think such a Jeep has a good shot at satisfying the suits in Auburn Hills.
