We can’t get the European Passat—and given its high price point and shorter wheelbase, VW’s decision to offer an elongated, cost-effectively redesigned Passat for the U.S. makes strategic sense. Nevertheless, we like the European model, and the new R Line version makes us miss it a bit more. The R Line is a new trim level on the Passat wagon and it includes a lowered suspension, 17- or 18-inch alloy wheels, a black diffuser, a silver roof rack, and a rear spoiler. Sport seats, a sporty steering wheel with a flat bottom, and titanium silver décor adorn the interior.

Name That Shifter 74

On Monday we presented this week’s shifter and asked you to identify the make and model of the vehicle from whence it came. This week’s contest was challenging, judging by the variety of guesses and the fact that only a few were correct. The first commenter to match the shifter with the 1983 Volkswagen Vanagon was Zach C., who will receive a Save the Manuals button and sticker as a reward.
The Vanagon pictured here is from our June 1983 issue. Even though the 1983 Vanagon didn’t look any different from the year before, its biggest change was under its boxy sheetmetal. The Vanagon received water cooling for its previously air-cooled flat-four for the first time. Volkswagen made several other changes to the flat-four, too, resulting in an additional 15 hp and an 11-mph-higher top speed. The new totals? A road-thumping 82 hp and a maximum velocity of 86 mph.

Italian Masterpieces on Display at L.A.’s Petersen Automobile Museum; Here’s an Exclusive Behind-the-Ropes Photo Tour:

Should you find yourself in Los Angeles between now and next February, or if you’re itchin’ to make a trip out west and all you need is a reason, make the “Sculpture in Motion: Masterpieces in Italian Design” exhibit at the Petersen Automotive Museum a part of the itinerary. This extraordinary showcase currently features 17 cars of varying vintages ranging from a 1932 Ford cabriolet designed by Pininfarina (who knew?) to the unspeakably gorgeous 2009 Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione, including notable works by Ghia, Scaglietti, Bertone, Zagato, Italdesign, and more.
Your inner teenager will be mesmerized by the wacky, wedge-shaped 1970 Lancia Stratos Zero concept by Bertone with its bright orange paint, triangular engine cover, and one-piece BMW Isetta–style windshield/door—complete with ribbed rubber foot grip on the nose. In terms of significance, few vehicles in the world can compare with Pininfarina’s elegant 1947 Cisitalia 202 coupe, a car so beautiful it landed a parking spot in New York’s Museum of Modern Art. A mischievous-looking, banana-yellow Bertone-designed 1953 Stanguellini coupe is such a delight that it won last year’s Concorso Italiano in Carmel, California. And we would be remiss if we didn’t mention the majestic (and extraordinarily valuable) silver 1957 Ferrari 625/250 Testa Rossa.
While the Cisitalia and the Stratos will serve as anchor vehicles throughout the exhibit, others will be rotated out for other examples of Italian style. Petersen spokespeople declined to say which exact cars are on the way, however, other than to say that they also are “masterpieces.”

Volvo’s XC90 SUV is old and nearing retirement—it’s expected to finally get a replacement sometime in 2014—so we’ll consider this mild 2013 refresh something of a 60th birthday party. Of course, the XC90 isn’t 60 years old, but keep in mind it debuted at the 2002 Detroit auto show just months after the first-generation Apple iPod hit the market. Yeah, the one with a scroll-y wheel thing and a black-and-white LCD screen. We’ll pause while you describe to your kids how handheld devices used to be operated via physical buttons. Unlike the iPod, the XC90 is still in its first-gen shell, but Volvo did give its soon-to-be-retiree a shot of botox to keep it fresh-ish for 2013. (more…)

While others were busy building market-research-driven hatchbacks—vehicles like the BMW 5-series GT and the Mercedes-Benz R-class—Audi simply tasked its designers with creating a beautiful five-door. Subaru’s latest Impreza is familiar to small-car buyers in one way—it offers standard all-wheel drive—and fresh in another: It actually boasts competitive EPA fuel-economy ratings. Our manual example (what, did you think we were going to order one with the CVT?) is pegged by the EPA at 25 mpg in the city and 33 on the highway, which compares very favorably to the previous manual hatch’s 20/27 ratings. The rear-wheel-drive range-topper is destined for a global marketplace; whether the U.S. is among those markets is yet to be confirmed, but we’re confident we’ll get a K9 of our own. BMW has announced mileage figures for the 2013 X1 crossover, and the high-riding wagon is as fuel-thrifty as the new-for-2012 3-series sedan. The X1 has been on sale in Europe for a few years, but for 2013 BMW gave the crossover a midcycle refresh and sent it our way for the first time. It will be available with two turbocharged engines—a 240-hp 2.0-liter four and a 300-hp 3.0-liter inline-six—that both hook up to eight-speed automatics. Buyers can spec their four-cylinder X1 with either rear- or all-wheel drive, and the six-cylinder X1 is available only with all-wheel drive. Read full story »

Of course you do; no self-respecting car enthusiast forgets a small, frog-faced hatchback that was force-fed the guts of a supercar. (As for us, our first-drive experience cattle-branded the thing into our gray matter.) Apparently a few well-heeled customers didn’t forget about it either, because Nissan has decided to take orders for a limited run of Juke-Rs. The 2013 Porsche Boxster’s EPA fuel-economy ratings have been released, and the new mid-engine roadster is more efficient than the outgoing model. Only the base model’s economy figures are out, however; those for the latest Boxster S, which has a larger version of the base car’s engine, have yet to be revealed. As part of Porsche’s 2013 redesign for the Boxster, weight was reduced by 55 pounds and the old base car’s 2.9-liter flat-six engine was replaced with an all-new 2.7-liter unit. Read full story »

Toyota has revealed its second all-electric RAV4 SUV, and it is the result of a partnership between the Japanese automaker and Tesla Motors. The original electrified RAV4 was introduced in California in 1997 for fleets, and a small number eventually made their way to customers in 2003. When we were given a look at this iteration of Toyota’s electric SUV at the 2010 L.A. auto show, the company wasn’t sharing final technical specs or detailed information of any kind. Cadillac has announced pricing for the upcoming 2013 ATS sedan, which will slot beneath the larger CTS in the company’s lineup, and it will start at $33,990. The base sedan gets a 200-hp, 2.5-liter four, which powers the rear wheels through a six-speed automatic transmission. Next up the ladder is a 270-hp, turbocharged 2.0-liter four; it is available with both a six-speed manual and a six-speed automatic. Pricing for the turbo’d ATS begins at $35,795 and all-wheel drive is available as an option, but only paired with the automatic. Finally, the top-shelf (at least until the hotter V model arrives) ATS gets a 318-hp, 3.6-liter V-6 and starts at $42,090. An automatic will be standard—no manual is currently slated for the six—and all-wheel drive will be available. Read full story »

Some 24 Hours of LeMons races have a leader that runs away from the competition and takes the win on laps by a comfortable margin, as happened in Michigan two weeks ago. Other races, you get a weekend-long struggle between a half-dozen contending teams who spend hour after hour stuck within a few laps of one another, on an asphalt battlefield strewn with busted connecting rods and transmission chunks.
