Kinetic Motorsports to Expand Availability of Performance Parts to Kia Optima, Rio, Soul, and Sportage

Kinetic Motorsports to Expand Availability of Performance Parts to Kia Optima, Rio, Soul, and Sportage:

2012 Kia Optima SX

Kinetic Motorsports, Kia’s racing partner, has seen its relationship with the automaker blossom since the pair linked up to campaign a Forte Koup in Grand-Am’s Street Tuner class two years ago. Following up on the Koup’s class win last year, Kinetic is fielding two turbocharged Optimas in the upcoming 2012 Pirelli World Challenge series. The outfit also put together the B-Spec racing package for the Rio, and most recently has begun selling Kinetic-branded performance parts for the Kia Forte sedan and Koup. Now, Kinetic is adding individual parts for the Rio, Optima, Soul, and Sportage. Here’s a list of performance parts you can expect by spring 2012:

Optima (2.4-liter and 2.0-liter turbo models)

  • Full cat-back exhaust system

  • Exterior trim pieces in a variety of patterns/finishes

  • Eibach lowering kit

  • Cold-air intake

  • Oil-filler cap

Sportage (2.4-liter and 2.0-liter turbo models)

  • Cold-air intake

Soul

  • Axle-back exhaust (muffler)

  • Exterior trim pieces in a variety of patterns/finishes

  • Eibach lowering kit

  • Cold-air intake

  • Oil-filler cap

Rio 5

  • Axle-back exhaust (muffler)

  • Exterior trim pieces in a variety of patterns/finishes

  • Eibach lowering kit

  • Cold-air intake

  • Oil-filler cap

The parts will be available through Kinetic Motorsports, but we’re told the majority of the stuff will go to Kia dealerships, where it will be bolted on to new or used cars that are sold as complete vehicles. Kinetic’s performance parts are somewhat limited in scope—this isn’t Ford Racing, after all—but the operation is both new and largely experimental. As Kia did with its racing operations, it is testing the performance-parts waters using Kinetic’s go-fast experience. Kia fully backs the exercise, but is giving the more-nimble Kinetic the freedom to create and manufacture the parts. In exchange, Kia dealers will advertise the parts and Kia will supply Kinetic with exterior trim parts for it to paint, pattern, and sell. Kinetic warrants the parts it sells, and none of the pieces void Kia’s factory warranty.

Given that the market for Kia-specific performance pieces is essentially unknown, having Kinetic build the parts reduces the risk for Kia. If Kia and Kinetic continue to find success with the Forte Koup race cars, do well with the more-powerful Optima in World Challenge, and get a foothold in B-Spec racing, then the pool of customers looking to add more sportiness to their Kias might grow sufficiently enough to warrant more serious offerings.

2013 Volkswagen Golf GTI Cabriolet

VW’s beloved Mk1 Golf Cabriolet combined GTI power and suspension tuning with top-down motoring, and now Volkswagen is at it again—in Europe anyway—as it debuts the Golf GTI Cabriolet. Buzz around such a model started building last year when the company showed its Golf R Cabriolet and GTI Cabriolet concepts to rabid VW addicts at the annual Wörthersee GTI meet in Austria. Although the GTI’s engine has been offered in the Golf Cabriolet for some time, a full GTI-spec version hasn’t previously been available.

Supplier Magna Steyr Creates Oddball MILA Coupic Concept [Geneva Auto Show]

Supplier Magna Steyr Creates Oddball MILA Coupic Concept [Geneva Auto Show]:

Magna Steyr MILA Coupic concept

Austrian manufacturer-for-hire and supplier Magna Steyr is bringing a concept car called the “MILA Coupic” to the Geneva auto show. Magna assembles cars for automakers such as Mini, Peugeot, and Mercedes-Benz, but it doesn’t sell a single car under its own name. So why did Magna create the MILA Coupic? It’s a showcase for its engineering, manufacturing, and supply capabilities. The Coupic is the sixth MILA concept created by the company.

The Coupic packs its features and concepts in a high-riding crossover coupe body wearing a bright two-tone paint job. Magna calls the Coupic a three-in-one car, because the two key technologies on display—a trick folding roof and reconfigurable interior—help it to offer multiple packaging options. The roof consists of an unconventional combination of glass and cloth panels; there are front and rear sections that can be opened independently, and each section is itself comprised of several slats.

Magna Steyr MILA Coupic concept

With the panels closed, the Coupic is a five-passenger vehicle with a stylishly rakish roofline. When either the fore or aft section is opened, the slats stack up accordion-style at one end of the roof opening. Open both the front and rear sections, and you get a pseudo convertible. For its final trick, the Coupic’s rear seats fold up and move forward to close off the front seats from the rest of the vehicle; at that point, the aft roof panels can be opened to create a small pickup bed. We’re looking forward to seeing it in action; at this point, we’re thinking of the Coupic as the two-door spawn of a BMW X6 and a GMC Envoy XUV.

However funky the Coupic’s collection of tech may be, it doesn’t actually preview an entire car. It’s unlikely the roof design, weather-sealing folding rear seats, and Transformer-style pickup-bed mode will ever live together on a production vehicle. But Magna’s current and potential clients may like what they see, so you could see individual elements of this concept in future products wearing more familiar badges.

TechArt Announces Body Bits, Exhaust System for 991-Gen Porsche 911 [Geneva Auto Show]

TechArt Announces Body Bits, Exhaust System for 991-Gen Porsche 911 [Geneva Auto Show]:

TechArt 911 Front

The new, 991-gen Porsche 911 has been on sale for some time now, which means bracing for not only an onslaught of Porsche-created variants (we’ve already driven the first one, the cabriolet) but also a fresh crop of tuned, modified, and/or aesthetically reworked 911s created by the world’s tuners. And so here we are: One of the most well-known Porsche manipulators, TechArt, has announced new addenda for the latest versions of the Carrera and Carrera S. The bits debut at next week’s Geneva auto show.

The TechArt treatment planned for display includes a two-part front spoiler with an integrated splitter, a fixed rear wing, a rear diffuser, trim pieces for the headlamps and side mirrors, and an exhaust system with active flaps. The company also promises 20- or 21-inch wheels available in a couple of designs.

The interior can be outfitted to the check-writer’s liking; the Geneva model will be fitted with black leather, Alcantara, and punctuated by body-color-coordinated stitching. Cabin trim will be rendered in matte yellow or black, and there’s some carbon fiber in there, too. Sounds about right.

Fisker Hires Former Chrysler Boss LaSorda, Company Says It’s Been a “Political Football” and Nina is On Hold

Fisker Hires Former Chrysler Boss LaSorda, Company Says It’s Been a “Political Football” and Nina is On Hold:

2012 Fisker Karma EcoChic

Fisker Automotive has just appointed former Chrysler CEO Tom LaSorda as its chief executive and vice chairman of the board. LaSorda takes over the CEO spot from company namesake and co-founder Henrik Fisker, who will become the board’s executive chairman. LaSorda was the CEO at Chrysler from 2005 to 2007 and worked there as a high-level executive from 2007 to 2009. He was in charge at Chrysler during the final two years of its hostile merger with Daimler and was later a big proponent of the Chrysler-Fiat merger.

After the announcement, we participated in a Q&A session with Fisker and LaSorda. Here’s what we learned:

  • Given LaSorda’s management history, it shouldn’t be a shock that he said Fisker is looking at strategic alliances with larger automakers. He didn’t elaborate on any companies specifically and when pressed said that Fisker is open to the idea but not actively seeking a partnership. We read this as a pretty good sign Fisker will wind up working with a big company down the road.

  • Fisker has built 2000 Karmas so far, and 840 of them have been delivered to dealers. Many, but not all of those, are now with customers.

  • Fisker’s more-affordable model, the Nina, is in a holding pattern. The car was to be designed and built in Delaware, with both of those functions dependent on Fisker getting another $336 million in loans from the U.S. Department of Energy. With that funding on indefinite hold (more on why below), Fisker is looking for more money from private investors. In the meantime, LaSorda says, Nina is still going in “virtual engineering.”

  • “It’s an election year and we’ve been a political football,” Henrik Fisker said when asked why the DOE loans had been frozen. The entire program, which would loan money to renewable-energy businesses in the U.S., has been paused while predominantly Republican members of Congress call for very tight oversight.

Lamborghini SUV Rendered, Coming in Concept Form Soon

Lamborghini SUV Rendered, Coming in Concept Form Soon:

Lamborghini SUV (artist's rendering)

What It Is: Lamborghini’s upcoming SUV, which will be previewed soon by a concept version. As these renderings show, the unnamed five-door should have a coupe-like silhouette and extreme angular lines reminiscent of the Aventador. It will fit right into the sports-car manufacturer’s lineup—as much as an SUV can, anyway. This will be the second off-roader by the brand; the crudely styled LM002, an offspring of Lambo’s Cheetah military-vehicle project, was sold from the mid-1980s through the early ’90s.

Aston Martin Updates the Vantage Range for 2012 [Geneva Auto Show]

Aston Martin Updates the Vantage Range for 2012 [Geneva Auto Show]:

Aston Martin V8 Vantage S

Now that the Vantage lineup has been filled out by the addition of the V-12 coupe, V-12 Zagato, and Vantage S, Aston Martin is focusing its attention on the base coupe and roadster. Both will continue to use the same 420-hp, 4.7-liter V-8, but the rest of the package has received a few tweaks.

For purists, Aston has kept the six-speed manual transmission as standard. The Sportshift six-speed automatic transmission has been dropped; the optional gearbox is now the seven-speed Sportshift II from the Vantage S. It features closer gear ratios and a lower final-drive ratio. Aston Martin says that the Sportshift II provides faster, more precise shifts than its predecessor.

The steering has been updated with a quicker ratio of 15:1 over the last model’s 17:1. The front brakes are upgraded to 15-inch ventilated discs with six-piston calipers. Wider rubber—by 10 mm—should help take advantage of those minor changes.

A few styling modifications include a revised lower front bumper and splitter, and a larger air intake for the engine and front brakes. A new rear diffuser and side sills add to the look of this mildly improved Vantage.

The higher-powered Vantage S also gets some changes, including an aero package that makes a subtle visual distinction from its little brother, using carbon-fiber detailing. The cabin of the S now offers hand-stitched leather, a navigation system, Bluetooth, and cruise control as standard features.

2012 Audi A1 Quattro Driven: 256 HP, All-Wheel Drive, Killer Looks

2012 Audi A1 Quattro Driven: 256 HP, All-Wheel Drive, Killer Looks:

2012 Audi A1 Quattro

There are some special small cars that enthusiasts would kill for, including the mid-engined Renault 5 Turbo, the rear-drive Talbot Sunbeam Lotus, and just about any Group B World Rally Championship homologation car, such as the Peugeot 205 Turbo 16. Here’s a potential new classic: the Audi A1 Quattro, priced at the equivalent of more than $55,000 and powered by a 256-hp turbo four. Production is limited to just 333 units. It will be by far the most powerful car in its class, the 208-hp Mini John Cooper Works being a distant second.

Pininfarina Cambiano Sports-Sedan Concept Revealed [Geneva Auto Show]

Pininfarina Cambiano Sports-Sedan Concept Revealed [Geneva Auto Show]:

Pininfarina Cambiano concept

Pininfarina, the Italian design house responsible for such classics as the Ferrari 250 GT, the Alfa Romeo Giulietta Spider, and the Cadillac Allanté, has released photos of its new “elegant and refined sports sedan” concept, the Cambiano, ahead of the 2012 Geneva auto show. The concept is named after the town where the firm is based, and where it opened its Styling Center 30 years ago. (Whether the indebted company will exist to celebrate further anniversaries, at least under family ownership, remains uncertain.)

Lancia Florida II Sedan

Lancia Florida II

Press information isn’t available yet, but a report from Automotive News (subscription required) pegs the car as a plug-in extended-range hybrid that incorporates four 80-hp in-wheel electric motors and a diesel turbine (!) engine. The turbine is the range-extender, recharging the batteries when they are depleted; it also will feed power directly to the electric motors if there’s no juice on tap. Thus equipped, the Cambiano supposedly can reach 62 mph in 4.2 seconds and a top speed of 155 mph; short bursts up to 171 mph are also claimed to be possible. The car is said to have a total range of close to 500 miles, including almost 130 miles in pure electric mode. Actual performance and range likely are limited to just enough to get it on the show stand under its own power.

Pininfarina refers to the concept as a sports sedan, despite it not featuring four doors: There is one large door on the driver’s side and two smaller doors on the passenger side, the rear one opening suicide-style. The interior is as cleanly designed as the exterior, and features a wood floor and stitching-free upholstery. In the Automotive News report, Pininfarina says the Cambiano is inspired by the 1957 Lancia Florida II (pictured above). Stay tuned for more details and photos live from Geneva.

Jaguar XF Sportbrake Brochure Leaked [Geneva Auto Show]

Jaguar XF Sportbrake Brochure Leaked [Geneva Auto Show]:

Its Geneva auto show debut is a week away, but Jaguar’s XF Sportbrake—that’s Coventry-ese for wagon—has been revealed in a brochure scan posted on an Italian blog. (This comes after the English company had itself supplied “spy” photos a few months ago.)

Jaguar boss Adrian Hallmark is looking to move the company from niche player to mainstream contender, and this model will play a critical role for Jaguar in Europe, where a huge percentage of vehicles in the XF’s class are sold as wagons. (In some countries, wagons even outsell their sedan counterparts.) Without so much as seeing the real thing, much less driving it, we can confidently state that the XF Sportbrake will be leagues better than Jaguar’s last wagon effort, the X-type. That’s because the XF sedan is an excellent car, where the X-type sedan and wagon were made mostly of disappointment and class-below Ford Mondeo bits.

We expect the engines to include four- and six-cylinder diesels. An all-new gasoline V-6, derived from the company’s V-8, also has a good chance of being offered. Whether V-8 versions make the cut, we don’t know. You are free to salivate at the prospect of an XFR Sportbrake with Jaguar’s 510-hp supercharged V-8, or a 550-horse version that uses the XKR-S‘s engine. All-wheel drive could show up in the next few years, as it will be introduced for the XF and XJ sedans.

Unfortunately, it’s unlikely that any version of the XF Sportbrake will be sold in the U.S. Evaporating wagon sales have led BMW and Audi to kill the wagon versions of the 5-series and A6 in the States, while the A4 wagon has been recast as the almost-crossover A4 Allroad.

Official photos and info of the XF Sportbrake should be available very soon.

2013 Lamborghini Aventador Roadster Spy Photos: The LP700-4 Droptop is Caught in the Cold:

2013 Lamborghini Aventador Roadster spy photo

What It Is: A running prototype—and a fast-running one at that—of the Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4 coupe’s more extroverted twin. What isn’t yet confirmed is whether the roadster will have a cloth roof similar to that of its immediate antecedent, the Murciélago roadster, or something more substantial, such as a removable carbon-fiber panel. We hope rumors suggesting the latter are accurate, since the Murci roadster’s roof was little more than a makeshift pup tent for use only in a pinch. Although it probably doesn’t matter much: Given the natural habitat for most Lambos, most of these probably won’t have the roof in place very often. Regardless of the roof’s construction, nearly every other body panel appears to be shared with the standard Aventador; this is a good thing, since that car looks seriously bad-ass.

Jaguar XKR-Based Lyonheart K Pays Homage to E-Type, Updates Vizualtech Growler E

Jaguar XKR-Based Lyonheart K Pays Homage to E-Type, Updates Vizualtech Growler E:

Lyonheart K

Last year, Robert Palm at Classic Factory celebrated the 50th anniversary of arguably the most beautiful car ever made, the Jaguar E-type, by designing the retro-grade Vizualtech Growler E concept. The Growler reportedly was created under the commission of an anonymous Swiss businessman, but now an announcement sees the car perhaps headed for production, albeit with some tweaks and a new name: Lyonheart K.

The name isn’t all that’s new, as the Lyonheart K has been redesigned slightly to look more aggressive and less overtly retro. The quad oval headlights (which tipped a hat to the original E’s pair of oval lamps) are gone, replaced by sleek, one-piece units, and the vents behind the front wheels have thicker, more dramatic strakes.

The car still will be based on the Jaguar XKR and powered by a tuned version of that car’s 5.0-liter supercharged V-8 making 550 hp and 502 lb-ft of torque. (The horsepower figure is down from the Growler’s original claim of 600.) Those output figures are identical to those of the XKR-S; if Lyonheart doesn’t buy pre-prepped engines, it appears it will at least adopt the XKR-S’s ECU programming. The Lyonheart also is said to weigh substantially less than the non-S XKR, so the real-world K should be quick, too; Lyonheart claims it will sprint to 60 in just 3.7 seconds and top out at 186 mph. The latter figure matches the XKR-S’s terminal velocity.

The interior will be unique to the Lyonheart, with only a few hidden parts said to be plucked from the Jaguar parts bin. Robert Palm justifies the K’s $660,000 price tag by promising hyper-exclusivity—just 50 hand-built units are planned—and build quality that meets or exceeds that seen from Bentley and Rolls-Royce.

All development, engineering, and production will be executed in Coventry to give truth to the K’s “Made in England” label. Each example will be built to order, with an estimated 18 months between commission and delivery (to which, we are compelled to report, does not currently include the U.S.) .

Name That Shifter, No. 65: 1990 Chevrolet Beretta GTZ

Name That Shifter, No. 65: 1990 Chevrolet Beretta GTZ:

Name That Shifter 65

Shifter No. 65

On Monday, we presented this week’s shifter and asked you to identify the make and model of the vehicle from whence it came. We figured the anonymous-looking shifter might give you more trouble than it did. The first commenter to correctly identify it as a 1990 Chevrolet Beretta GTZ’s five-speed manual was Mike Jackson. Mike will receive a Save the Manuals button and sticker as a reward.

The Beretta GTZ pictured here is from our December 1989 issue. Conceived as the top-dog Beretta, the GTZ combined GM’s most powerful Quad 4 engine with a sportier suspension tune. The 180-hp Beretta charged to 60 mph from a standstill in 7.7 seconds, and stuck to the skidpad to the tune of 0.84 g. At the time, the GTZ’s skidpad figure was the highest we’d recorded for a front-drive car.
