Initial price, ink cost and reliability earn the DeskJet 1000 high marks.
2. Lexmark Prospect Pro205.
A maximum color resolution of 4800 x 1200 dpi, a small footprint, and power savings makes the Prospect Pro205 popular. Its extraordinary 5-year warranty may seal the deal for any business looking for a printer that lasts.

2012 Volvo S60 T6 AWD Long-Term Test Intro: A Polar Bear Moves into C/D’s Vehicular Zoo
A polar bear moves into Car and Driver’s vehicular zoo.
Last year’s purchase of Volvo by the Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Company Limited can be summed up in two words, which also happen to be one translation of Geely’s Mandarin name: good luck. The double whammy of a global recession and anxiety over the transaction prompted a near-death experience for the venerable Swedish brand: Only 21,423 Volvos were delivered in the U.S. in 2010, down by more than 100,000 units from the decade’s highest mark.

Audi Planning to Bring Allroad Back to the U.S., This Time as A4
Allroads will lead to Rome (New York) once again, as Audi tells us that the Allroad, its jacked-up all-wheel-drive station wagon, will return to the U.S. The only Audi Allroad model offered in the U.S. was an A6, last seen here in 2005. Since then, Audi has canceled the A6 Avant here altogether, making a lower-volume upgrade trim like the Allroad pretty much unfeasible. But there are plans to bring Allroad back, albeit in a smaller travel size.
Because we do get the A4 Avant here, and because Audi apparently sees extra sales in that slot, the A4 Allroad is likely to be the model that brings the gray bumpers, wider track, and extra ground clearance back to our shores. In Europe, the A4 Allroad is available with the 2.0-liter turbo four we get in our A4, as well as 2.0-liter and 3.0-liter turbo-diesels. Bet on the 2.0T gas engine. Timing should coincide with the current A4′s mid-cycle refresh, which would logically come for the 2014 model year, following (and mirroring) the A5′s 2013 face lift.
For those wondering why we don’t get the larger A6 Avant or its Allroad version, the thinking is this: If the U.S. market is going to get low-volume products from Audi, they’re going to be fun, halo vehicles. Like the TT RS and RS5. So we’ll settle for that A4.
Current Volvo C70 Convertible Likely Dead in 2013, Status of Replacement Uncertain
Volvo’s compact S40 and V50 have already been canceled, and the long-term future of the C70 convertible—which shares a platform with those two cars—was put into jeopardy today: The company announced that the factory producing it will close at the end of 2013. The Uddavella factory is owned jointly by Pininfarina and Volvo, but Volvo takes sole ownership when the cooperative agreement expires in two years. In a statement released today, CEO Stefan Jacoby said “The low volumes in the Uddevalla plant do not justify continued production.”
Company sources have told us that it is possible for Volvo to continue building the C70 at another facility, but a decision about its survival hasn’t yet been made. But Jacoby’s own remark in today’s press release seems to seal the current car’s fate. “We will now look into when a next-generation Volvo convertible can be on the market and where it should be manufactured,” he said, leading us to believe that production of the current car will end when the factory is shuttered.
When the cancellation of the S40 was announced in June, a spokesperson told us that the C70 and the compact C30 hatchback had never been intended to be much more than niche products. But the C70′s sales weren’t sufficient to justify an entire factory, and indeed the sales numbers may be too slim to justify even “niche” status for Volvo and its Chinese parent Geely.
While it will probably be many years until a new Volvo convertible arrives—if one does at all—we expect that it would use the automaker’s upcoming Scalable Platform Architecture. This new platform underpinned Volvo’s Concept You, which debuted at this year’s Frankfurt auto show.

Six-Cylinder 2012 BMW 640i Coupe Priced from $74,475, Convertible from $81,975
BMW has priced the new six-cylinder 640i coupe at $74,475, with the convertible commanding $81,975. Those base prices are a substantial $9400 less than the cars’ eight-cylinder 650i counterparts. With BMW’s recent addition of the all-wheel-drive 650i xDrive coupe and convertible to the 6er lineup, it’s worth mentioning that the six-cylinder cars will be rear-drive only.
The 640i will use BMW’s single-turbo, 3.0-liter inline-six (called the N55, for BMW nutters) tuned to produce 315 hp and 330 lb-ft of torque—15 hp and 30 lb-ft more than it makes in the 535i. The numbers may mirror those of the six-cylinder 740i, but that car uses a twin-turbo 3.0-liter. The 640i should weigh less than the porky 650i, but can only be had with BMW’s eight-speed automatic transmission and disappointing Servotronic electric power-steering system (you can read all about this system in our 650i convertible first drive here). The 650i is available with a manual transmission.
Other than the lack of a manual, the 640i gives up little to its bigger-engine brother and can be optioned with most of the same packages and gizmos as the 650i. Production of the 2012 BMW 640i has already begun, and the less-expensive 6er is expected to hit dealerships in October.
Name That Shifter, No. 44
It’s Monday, and that means it’s time to present this week’s shifter. You’ll have until mid-day Wednesday to identify the make and model of the vehicle from whence this shifter came. The first person to respond correctly in the Backfires section below will win a Save the Manuals button and sticker. Good luck!
Number of Up! Variants Grows: SEAT and Škoda Versions Revealed
While the new Up! minicar will spawn a large number of variants for Volkswagen itself—as proof, six Up!-based VW concepts debuted at this year’s Frankfurt auto show—other VW Group members will get in on the action, too: The SEAT Mii and Škoda Citigo have been announced. (We wonder if Nintendo will take umbrage with the SEAT’s moniker.) Like other VW-sourced SEAT and Škoda models, little separates the Mii and the Citigo from their Volkswagen donor vehicle. The cars are powered by the same gas engine, are available with similar equipment, and, excepting their brand-appropriate front ends, wear nearly identical bodywork.
The exteriors are completely devoid of any of the VW’s personality; besides the more conventional and less-smiley fascias, the SEAT and Škoda also do away with the Up!’s sheetmetal up-kick at the C-pillar. As mentioned, both the SEAT and the Škoda use the same 1.0-liter, three-cylinder gas engine in 60- or 75-hp strengths. The powertrain choices, like those for the Up!, will quickly expand, though: SEAT will soon sell a compressed-natural-gas-fired Mii, and figure on the E-Up!’s fully electric system becoming available in the Mii and Citigo sometime after the VW goes on sale in 2013.
As for body styles, the SEAT Mii and Škoda Citigo will be available in five-door form sometime in 2012, like the Up!. Both cars will similarly feature deep option lists and be available with the VW’s portable navigation and laser-guided collision-avoidance system. The SEAT and Škoda will go on sale in their respective home markets of Spain and the Czech Republic before the end of the year; they will invade the rest of Europe in 2012.
