COMMENTARY | Because the average college student seems to have Krazy Glued her cellphone to her hand, one subject I have received several research papers on from my University of the Sciences students is the possible link of cellphone use to cancer. These industrious students have almost all come to a “who knows” conclusion about the matter after reviewing the minimal sources needed for their assignments. The basic reason for this is that the etiology of a cancer is, in itself, almost impossible to determine.
(For the record, the most impressive cellphone paper I’ve received came from a student reviewing the wider danger of cellphones, including the danger of explosion if a battery in the phone is overcharged. This actually happens, and when it does, sometimes blowing out an eardrum, it’s hard to blame anything besides the phone.)
Recent “reassuring” studies by the American Cancer Society, the FDA, the FCC, and the National Cancer Institute, however, haven’t stopped an arm of the World Health from declaring Tuesday that cellphone use is “possibly carcinogenic” for humans.
Key to this discussion is the type of radiation emitted by cell phones, a non-ionizing type thought to be too weak to break chemical bonds in the brain or cause DNA damage associated with cancer. While the WHO declaration was based on no new studies, it seems to lean heavily on data released earlier this year in the Journal of the American Medical Association. That study, headed by Nora D. Volkow, involved PET scans showing a 7 percent increase in brain activity in brain areas nearest an activated cell phone’s antenna.
Classifying cellphones as “possibly carcinogenic” puts them in the same category as DDT, gasoline-engine exhaust, and coffee. (A somewhat lengthy print article in today’s Philadelphia Inquirer also notes that lead, various industrial chemicals, and pickled vegetables fall into this category.)
So, it seems to be the WHO has found a new and alarming way to say, “Hey, we don’t know.” However, Donald Berry, a biostatistics professor at the University of Texas, has said, “This is not something I worry about and it will not in any way change how I use my cellphone.” His AP interview was given via cellphone. Coming very close to Russel Howard’s song “Everything Causes Cancer,” Berry said, “Anything is a possible carcinogen.”

Cell Phone Radiation Dangers – Protection From Cell Phone Dangers

Thеrе аrе many possible dangers in regards to cell phone radiation. Numerous studies prove cell phone υѕе саn lead tο irreversible destruction tο уουr brain cells аnԁ DNA cells. Thе dangers οf cell phone radiation аrе a 30% increase οf brain tumors, according tο thе “March 2003 Journal οf Oncology,” аnԁ according tο thе National Cancer Institute, a 25% increase οf cancer іn humans ѕіnсе cell phones became well Ɩονеԁ. Nοt οnƖу аrе уου аnԁ уουr family tree аt a higher cancer risk, bυt headaches, lupus, аnԁ chronic insomnia hаνе аƖƖ bееn associated tο thе harmful affects οf cell phone radiation. Cell phones саn аƖѕο interfere wіth pacemakers аnԁ уουr body’s blood brain barrier. Thіѕ іѕ information thе cell phone companies want tο keep ѕіƖеnt.
Hοw ԁο cell phones cause destructionof уουr cells? Thеу radiate a constant pulse (аn electromagnetic field аƖѕο known аѕ EMFs) against уουr ear аnԁ brain. It wουƖԁ bе thе equivalent οf walking around wіth a microwave oven attached tο уουr head. Thеѕе deadly affects take рƖасе slowly over time, unless уου аrе a child. Sіnсе children’s brains аrе still developing, thе penetration οf thе harmful electromagnetic fields іntο thе brain аnԁ eye аrе much higher. Depending οn hοw much уου υѕе уουr cell phone, уου mіɡht nοt notice anything іѕ incorrect, until іt іѕ tοο late.
In 1993, cell phone manufacturers gave Dr. George Carlo, (Public Health Scientist, epidemiologist, аnԁ lawyer) 15 tο 25 million dollars tο research аnԁ prove cell phones wеrе safe. Overusing Cellphones May Cause Cancer

By The Nation
After the World Health Organisation (WHO) issued a warning that people who used mobile phones too much could face the risk of brain tumour, the Telecommunications Consumer Protection Institute (TCPI) said yesterday that Thais faced an even bigger risk because they slept with their cellphone placed near the headboard.
TCPI director Prawit Leesathapornwongsa said the WHO International Agency for Research on Cancer study that cellphones had a “2B” classification, or that they could cause cancer. He said the study also found that people using their mobile phones for more than 1,640 hours faced a greater risk of developing glioma brain cancer.
Those using a bluetooth hands-free device were 100 times less exposed to electromagnetic waves, while those using headphones faced 10 per cent less risk, he said. He also warned that these devices should not stuck in the ear while not being used. In addition, 3G phones are said to release 100 times less radioactive energy than the GSM phones, he added.
Prawit said a poll conducted in February found that Thai users were more exposed to radiation from cellphones because 64.5 per cent placed them at the top of their bed while sleeping, and 41.6 per cent carried their phone in their pocket. He urged people to keep their mobile phones away from them when they are not in use.

Experts Say Cell Phone Safety | Bluetube Headsets Earpieces Can Minimize Possible Risks From Cellphones
http://www.emfnews.org/qlinks.html
WEDNESDAY, June, 1 ( HealthDay News ) — Can using a cellphone increase the risk of cancer?
The World Health Organization (WHO) says that it might.
After a group of scientists from 14 countries, including the United States, analyzed peer-reviewed studies on cellphones, the team announced Tuesday that there was enough evidence to categorize personal exposure as “possibly carcinogenic to humans.”
This puts cellphones in the same category as lead and auto exhaust. The WHO report noted that there wasn’t enough evidence to prove the radiation from cellphones is linked to cancer, but enough to alert consumers to a possible connection.
Dr. Michael Schulder, vice chairman of neurosurgery and director of the brain tumor institute at North Shore Long Island Jewish School of Medicine in Hempstead, N.Y., said the category into which WHO is putting cellphones is one that asserts there may be a concern. “That’s fairly weak as a concern goes,” he addded.
According to the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC), which regulates radiation from cellphones, “there is no scientific evidence to date that proves that wireless phone usage can lead to cancer or a variety of other health effects, including headaches, dizziness or memory loss.”
But, Schulder said, “commonsense would tell you that since a cellphone is a microwave generator and emits radiation, it has the potential to alter DNA. And it should be used in moderation.”
Proving a causal relation between cellphone use and brain tumors is very hard to do, Schulder added. “It [would] take following many patients over many years to try to draw a connection,” he said. “Even if a connection exists, it will be very hard to prove.”
That’s partly because the radiation emitted by cellphone includes very low level microwave radiation, a type of non-ionizing radiation which is absorbed near the skin. It’s not ionizing radiation such as that emitted by an X-ray or CT scan. So-called ionizing radiation — a known cause of cancer — has enough energy to break down chemical bonds by knocking electrons off atoms or molecules (thus “ionizing” them and making them unstable).
However, to be on the safe side, Schulder recommends not speaking for long periods with the phone held to the ear. In addition, he suggests using an earpiece or speaker whenever possible. Both will keep the phone away from your head, he pointed out.
“If you use these methods, then any risk of brain tumor formation from the phone will be essentially eliminated,” Schulder said.
Dr. Otis Brawley, chief medical officer for the American Cancer Society, added: “Given that the evidence remains uncertain, it is up to each individual to determine what changes they wish to make, if any, after weighing the potential benefits and risks of using a cellphone.”
If some feel the potential risk outweighs the benefit, they can take actions, including limiting cellphone use or using a headset, he said. “Limiting use among children also seems reasonable in light of this uncertainty,” Brawley said.
“On the other hand,” Brawley said, “if someone is of the opinion that the absence of strong scientific evidence on the harms of cellphone use is reassuring, they may take different actions, and it would be hard to criticize that,” he said.
Brawley also noted that many common exposures — even coffee drinking –are classified by WHO as potentially concerning.
For those who want to know how much radiation their phone emits, the FCC recommends contacting the manufacturer.
The FCC noted that earpieces will indeed “significantly reduce the rate of energy absorption” in a user’s head, but that if the phone is attached to the waist or another part of the body, “then that part of the body will absorb [radiofrequency] energy.”
Besides ear pieces, there are other devices (such as metal cellphone shields) that claim to protect users from cellphone radiation or reduce it, but the FCC is skeptical of them.
“Studies have shown that these devices generally do not work as advertised,” an FCC official statement cautioned. “In fact, they may actually increase radio frequency absorption in the head due to their potential to interfere with proper operation of the phone, thus forcing it to increase power to compensate,” the agency stated.
Another expert, Dr. Roberto Heros, a professor of neurological surgery at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, has a different take on cellphone safety.
“Our culture has become a slave to the cellphone,” he said. “We feel we cannot be out of touch for one minute, and we have to be connected by the cellphone.”
Heros thinks people should limit the time they spend on the devices. But, he said, “they should use it when necessary. They should not [hesitate to] make calls that are necessary, because of any fear or panic about radiation,” he said.
“If you really want to save lives, then don’t use the cellphone while you’re driving,” Heros said. “Not because of brain cancer, but because of immediate death from an accident.”

Here Comes the Chug: Chevrolet Confirms Diesel Cruze for 2013
Chevrolet has just announced that some time in 2013, it will launch a diesel-powered version of the Cruze in the U.S. The car will use a variant of the 2.0-liter four that’s installed in Cruzes throughout the world, but the company is otherwise silent on details, providing no further information on pricing, fuel economy, or output ratings.
Some markets receive a diesel Cruze with 163 hp and 265 lb-ft of torque, while others get a version with 148 hp and 236 lb-ft. Our bet would be for us to receive the latter—this is a small car, after all, and Chevy’s play here is to pump up its fuel-economy numbers. Whether the diesel-fueled Cruze will roundly trump the other small cars clustered around 40 mpg—including the Hyundai Elantra and Chevy’s own 42-mpg Cruze Eco, which the company assures us will still be sold when the diesel arrives—is up to the EPA. Considering that Chevrolet offers a six-speed manual transmission in all of the gasoline-powered Cruze models sold here already, we would expect that a row-your-own gearbox will be on offer for this new model, as well.
While we’d love to be able to run down a full spec sheet on the future diesel Cruze, the bare-bones info—a torquey diesel and a likely stick—is certainly enough to satiate us for today. Now, about that hatchback version of the Cruze . . .

2013 Infiniti JX Crossover Preview Parade, Float Number Three
We’re now in week three of the seven-week, seven-picture preview parade Infiniti has undertaken for its JX crossover SUV. In this third detail shot, we can see the JX’s take on the kinked D-pillar that Infiniti promises will be a hallmark of its styling moving forward, as well as the rearmost glass panel of what is likely a full-length panoramic roof. We can also see that the metallic roof rail cleverly conceals the liftgate hinge at its rearmost edge, and that the lower portion of the doors will incorporate a light-catching crease. Also, based on this and the last two shots, we also are left to surmise that Infiniti’s favorite color for its new crossover is a mossy green. Click here to see the first shot and here to see the second, and check back with us next week for the next preview shot.

2010 Subaru Legacy 3.6R Limited Long-Term Wrap: A Lasting Legacy is Doubtful
Our Legacy danced when we wanted it to, but shimmied even when we didn’t.
After our 2010 Subaru Legacy 3.6R spent 40,000 miles in our care, Subaru chose not to leave the car with us. This is, of course, always the case: Manufacturers whisk their cars away to poke, prod, and otherwise debrief them on what they saw and heard in their months with the Car and Driver staff. But the Legacy surely left a legacy.

Mazda Introduces Racing-Inspired MX-5 and 2 Black Limited Editions in U.K.
We forgive you for not knowing the back-story about these two special Mazdas, even if we did report on their inspiration back in March. We know; a certain motorsport-oriented cable TV network has the nerve to not televise the 2011 Britcar Production GTN Championship for its countless fans here in the U.S. Anyway, Mazda U.K. has been racing a 275-horsepower, 1870-pound MX-5 this year with relative success against some tough competition from the likes of Lotus Elises, Seat Leons, and BMW M3s. So to fulfill the old “Race on Sunday, Sell on Monday” mantra, there are now special race car-inspired “Black Limited Edition” versions of not just the MX-5, but also the Mazda2, available for Her Majesty’s people.
Unfortunately, Mazda interprets the words “black” and “edition” rather differently than does Porsche, whose Black Editions of the 911, Boxster, and Cayman are loaded with awesome. In this case case, the “black” part comes into play on the roofs and wheels of both models, with the MX-5 getting a black power-retracting hard top and the Mazda2 getting a strip of black vinyl over the roof panel; each wears a set of matching black shoes. Each car also offers an option of green, white, or red paint to contrast against the dark elements.
For both models, the real changes essentially end right there. The MX-5 uses the “Sport Tech” model as its basis, so it comes with features like air conditioning, a Bose audio system, Bluetooth, cruise control, and fog lights. The engine is a 160-hp 2.0-liter four, the transmission is a six-speed manual, the price is just a fiver under £23,000, and just 500 will be built. As for Mazda2, it uses a questionably sporty 84-horsepower 1.3-liter (the black roof must add 10 more ponies, we know it) and gets content similar to the MX-5’s, with the addition of tinted windows. A total of 618 will be produced at a more favorable price of £12,395 for the red version or 420 pounds more for the premium green or white paints. Meanwhile, the one we really want—that 275-hp MX-5 GT—remains a one-off track toy.
