During our brief drive in a mild-hybrid Malibu Eco prototype, Chevrolet told us that the car’s engine lineup would be comprised exclusively of four-cylinders, a move we considered questionable. Now, though, the company has confirmed that the car will get an optional turbocharged four-cylinder, which will take the V-6′s place in the lineup. Chevy isn’t saying yet when the turbo will be available, or what engine it will be. The 220-hp 2.0-liter found under the hood of the non-GS Buick Regal Turbo is a likely candidate, as is the 270-hp version from the Regal GS.

While the Honda Accord, Ford Fusion, Toyota Camry, and Nissan Altima still offer a V-6 option, Chevrolet won’t be the only player in the mid-size-sedan segment with an all-four-cylinder lineup. The Hyundai Sonata and Kia Optima manage quite well without a six, their turbo motor pumping out a healthy 274 hp. In addition to the mild-hybrid Eco model—which will be the first to launch, arriving early next year—the Malibu will offer a new 2.5-liter four with about 190 hp. Given that output, our money is on the boosted engine making somewhere closer to Regal GS levels of power.

We have plenty of spy photos of the upcoming rear-drive 2013 Cadillac ATS, but incognito photography rarely reveals what’s under a car’s hood. Thankfully, Cadillac stepped in and released that very information today. The ATS, which slots below the CTS in Caddy’s sedan lineup, will be available with a naturally aspirated 2.5-liter four, a turbocharged 2.0-liter four, and a 3.6-liter V-6.

The turbo four and the V-6 were expected, but the naturally aspirated four-cylinder is something of a surprise. Cadillac didn’t come out and say it, but we’re guessing the 2.5-liter is the same unit that will power some versions of the 2013 Chevrolet Malibu. We expect it will make around 190 hp in the Chevy, though Cadillac could always squeeze a bit more out of it to better differentiate it from its humble roots. As for the turbo, Cadillac says it will produce about 270 hp—the same output as the Buick Regal GS’s 2.0-liter turbocharged four. This is not, however, the same engine. Cadillac tells us it is about 95-percent new—it’s a mirror-image of the GS motor, with the intake and exhaust having switched sides. Like the other 2.0, though, it is all aluminum, and although it uses a different turbocharger (the GS uses a Borg Warner piece, the Caddy a Mitsubishi/Eaton), both cram the same 20 psi down the intake. The V-6 is GM’s latest direct-injected unit; it makes 308 hp in the Cadillac SRX and CTS and will likely top the ATS’s engine range. Magnetorheological shocks will be available, as will paddle shifters on automatic models.

The ATS was designed to go up against entry-level luxury players like the BMW 3-series and Mercedes-Benz C-class. Both of those cars gained turbocharged four-cylinders as their base engines for 2012, but the Cadillac’s mid-level turbo will handily out-power both of them. (The base 2.5-liter four’s output will even be competitive with Benz’s turbo four.) The 3.6-liter six will trump both the C-class’s 302-hp V-6 and the BMW’s 300-hp turbo six. We’re looking forward to driving Cadillac’s first small sports sedan—especially the twin-turbo V-6–powered V version—after it debuts at the Detroit auto show in January.

Buick has announced that a new five-passenger crossover called the Encore will join its 2013 lineup and released a teaser photograph of the sub-Enclave-sized SUV. Judging from the headlight seen here, the Encore will be somewhat less exciting than the Envision concept from this year’s Shanghai auto show. While we speculated that a production version of the Envision might utilize the Cadillac SRX’s architecture, rumor has it that the Encore will ride on a smaller, front-drive platform shared with the surprisingly good Chevrolet Sonic. We’ll likely have to wait until the Encore debuts at the 2012 Detroit auto show in January for more info, but Buick will reveal a full photo of the crossover before then so stay tuned.

Volkswagen is a relative newcomer to the world of motorsports, at least when compared to a company like Mercedes-Benz with its storied history on race tracks. True there has been a VW Motorsport operation for over four decades with a small operation in an innocuous building on a side street in Hannover, not too far from VW’s headquarters in Wolfsburg.

Over the years VW Motorsport has been involved in many forms of auto racing, mainly with one-make racers and as an engine supplier starting with Formula Vee and more recently with Formula 3. It’s dabbled in rallying but never at the top level. In 2003 VW formed its own team to tackle Dakar Rally and it triumphed with the Race Touaregs winning the last three Dakars.

With that success under its belt, it was only natural for VW Motorsport to look for its next challenge. Would it be F1 or WRC? Earlier in the year the answer came when VW Motorsport Director Kris Nissen announced it would tackle the second most popular motorsport series in the world with a Polo R WRC.

Unlike Ford and Mini, which turned to outside teams, M-Sport and Prodrive respectively, VW decided it would, like Citroen, develop the WRC car in house.

Then VW turned a few heads last month when it announced who would be the main driver – Sébastien Ogier, the 27-year-old Frenchman who won five rounds in the 2011 WRC series, the same number as teammate Sébastien Loeb, who has been world champion eight years in a row.

When Ogier said he was leaving Citroen many thought he would join the Ford WRC team. But it was Volkswagen that had lured the up and coming driver away from Citroen. At the announcement, Nissen said “We are proud that such a successful and quick duo as Sébastien Ogier and his co-driver Julien Ingrassia have decided to join Volkswagen. The aim of putting a competitive Polo R WRC on the road for them as quickly as possible will additionally drive our team. We look forward to working with them and are hoping for many victories and titles in the future.”

Less than two weeks after the announcement Ogier won the Race of Champions — it could not have been a better start for his VW career. He also made some demonstration runs in an early Polo R WRC test car in front of the partisan German crowd.

The day after his victory I got to spend a brief time looking around the VW Motorsport’s team headquarters in Hannover. It’s grown in size considerably and is now in several, still unassuming, buildings totaling over 100,000 sq. ft, on the same street. Inside there are over 160 people designing, engineering and fabricating virtually every component literally from scratch. I saw sequential gearboxes being assembled, wiring modules being crafted and an early engine being dyno tested. The Polo R WRC show car was already back in the shop being disassembled while next to it the first actual WRC test car was taking shape. I was not allowed to photograph the bodyshell – no surprise!

Initially the team will construct three test cars that Ogier and other yet to be named drivers will test during 2012. Then 6 to 8 “production” rally cars will be made for the series campaign in 2013. The all-wheel-drive Polo R WRC will be powered by a 1.6-liter TSI engine, producing about 300 hp with a maximum torque of around 260 lb.-ft.

Nissen told me “a successful car company must use motorsport for its image”. It’s certainly great to see VW tackle well-established players, like Ford and Citroen, in the WRC. Along with Mini, the four teams should put on a good show for WRC fans in 2013 and beyond.

VW’s entry into the WRC reminds me of Audi’s sudden and unexpected arrival on the rally scene in 1980, when it shook up the then established teams. Could VW do the same thing three decades later?

A Swiss designer has turned a Mercedes-Benz McLaren SLR 999 into a gold plated and jewel encrusted monument to eccentric taste. Called the “Red Gold Dream,” the paintjob alone has 11 pounds of gold worked into it – guess that’s why it took 25 applications to lather it all on. The asking price is a jaw dropping $11-million.

If that’s not shocking enough for you, then take a peek inside. Hundreds of rubies have been worked into the gold leather-covered cabin. Oh yes, lest we forget, rubies can also be found on the Red Gold’s wheel bolts, the illuminated front badge, and alongside the 24-karat gold-covered LED front indicators.

The man behind this machine, Ueli Anliker, apparently plans to bump the output of the supercharged V-8 engine to roughly 1000-hp. A GPS tracking device is also included, should car thieves attempt to make off with the Red Gold Dream.

A quick online search for Mr. Anliker found a seemingly official website devoted to this unique automotive project, along with sub-sections listing news, a race museum and…Thai food?

R&T Wins Best Photo Award

R&T Wins Best Photo Award:

At the annual Dean Batchelor Awards dinner held by the Los Angeles-based Motor Press Guild, Road & Track won in the best photo category with an image of a rally car surrounded by fans taking pictures. Titled “Everyone’s a Photographer”, the photo by Reinhard Klein appeared in the September 2011 issue of Road & Track magazine. One of the three finalists in the photo category featured a dramatic camera mount shot of the Hennessey Venom taken by R&T Photographer Brian Blades. The big winner at the awards ceremony was the movie, Senna, which won for best film/video and the overall Dean Batchelor award. Other category winners included “Elva, The Cars, The People, The History” by Janos Wimpffen, and the article “Questor Grand Prix” by Tom Stahler, which appeared in Vintage Motorsports. Veteran auto journalism Brock Yates was also honored with the Dean Batchelor Lifetime Achievement Award.

Startech continues its interest in all things Jaguar-Land Rover with a muscled up version of the luxurious XJ sedan. It was only last month, during the Dubai Motor Show, that Startech unveiled a more menacing take on the new Land Rover Range Rover Evoque sport-utility. The Jaguar XJ sedan doesn’t seem a likely choice when it comes to body-kits and larger alloy wheels, though the finished result is pretty cool and classy.

Those three-piece forged alloy wheels measure 21-inches in diameter, and feature a “mirror-polished” finish. The front and rear fasciae have been subtly revised for a sportier look, with larger lower air intakes and a rear diffuser. A small spoiler has also been added onto the trunk-lid. Startech has customized the interior with cream-colored leather, piano black wood trim, along with “a state-of-the-art multimedia system centered on an Apple iPad.”

So the world’s economy is in a mess and Italy’s is a basket case, right?

Tell that to Porsche who opened a new center in Milan a few days ago and saw sales increase by 31.2% in the months from January to November.

Overall the German marque saw a 25% hike in global sales for the same period from 88,033 to 109,709.

There were regional variations with its home market, Germany, posting negative pan-European growth of 1.3%. The 3.1% softening in Asia is explained by long delivery times for the Cayenne and Panamera models.

By contrast, Russia posted the biggest growth in this region, up 44.4%, while sales in Japan rose 36.5%.

The Zuffenhausen model in greatest demand worldwide in November 2011 was, again, the Cayenne SUV, of which just less than 5,000 were delivered to customers. In the past month, Porsche delivered just over a fifth more of the Panamera sports saloons than in the same month the year before. In the process the top of the range Turbo and Turbo S versions exceeded all previous expectations with 228 units, being sold.

A third shift will be introduced in Leipzig starting in January 2012 to meet the strong demand for the Cayenne and Panamera.
