Driven: 2012 Audi A1 Sportback
Audi is the master of finding niches for new models, but I wonder if it hasn’t over-stretched itself with a 5-door variant of the generally admired A1 3-door?
Admittedly the Ingolstadt engineers haven’t simply taken a can opener to a 3-door to add the extra doors, it is 0.2 in. taller and wider than the three-door, but with the same overall length and wheelbase. To accommodate the doors, the B-pillars have been shifted forward by roughly 9 in., and the roof has been lengthened by more than 3 in. in the interest of rear headroom, but its still insufficient for the 6-foot Adcock cranium not to be pressed into the roof lining.

Moreover having contorted myself from the backseat I was only marginally more successful than a lobster trying to exit the fisherman’s pot at extricating myself from the rear.
On the road it is the 120-bhp TFSI engine that sparkles with a creamy stream of power that delivers zero to 62 mph in 9 seconds and 126 mph. But, oh, the ride over my local roads, that in places have a surface more reminiscent of a pineapple than tarmac, can be woeful with the passenger’s head nodding like Floyd Mayweather’s punch ball.
There’s a diesel version as well, but we’d better not go there…

2012 New York Auto Show
Next Friday those New Yorkers will have the opportunity to stroll through the Jacob Javits Center as the last of the major 2012 auto shows in North America gets under way. Judging by the tease photos that auto companies have been sneaking out the past few days it looks like we will see a bumper crop of new cars, including several World Premieres.
Toyota has shown a sneak sketch of the rear end of an all-new U.S.-designed sedan. It has not disclosed any information other than saying that “the sedan’s exciting new design features an elegant yet athletic look.” We presume it’s the new 2013 Toyota Avalon.

Lexus took the opposite end with a sneak look at one of the headlights on the 2013 ES sedan. All it says is that “the sixth-generation ES model introduces a progressive new design featuring the Lexus signature spindle grille and a new dynamic driving experience.”

Nissan teased us with a roof view of the 2013 Altima a few weeks ago. It has now got a bit bolder by revealing a wider side view with the suggestion that “the sculpted bodyside surface communicates forward motion and aerodynamics even when standing still.”

These are all mainstream cars.
What will undoubtedly excite most of us who dream of something more exotic will be two ‘flying cars’ that will be unveiled at the end of the day on Thursday to the media, just a few hours before the gala preview.
First is the 1000-horsepower Shelby 1000 that has already been driven by Road & Track. Shelby Automotive released a ‘Photoshopped’ photograph of the car showing it, falsely as it turns out, flying off the ground from a standing start.
The other is the Terrafugia Transition, which is a real flying car. The company says New York is an ideal venue to “show the first practical street-legal airplane to the world while meeting the people who will be part of its commercial success in the years to come.”

Terrafugia Transition
Stay tuned. Between now and next Friday we will bring you details on all the new cars being unveiled in New York — from the mundane to the sublime. The 2012 New York International Auto Show runs from April 6-15.

Mitsubishi to Attack 2012 Pikes Peak with i-Miev

Mitsubishi to Attack 2012 Pikes Peak with i-Miev:
Mitsubishi to attack 2012 Pikes Peak with i-Miev
To support the launch of the all-electric i, Mitsubishi has begun development on an i-Miev prototype to enter into the 2012 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb.
From the design sketches, it looks like Mitsubishi will outfit the i-Miev with a colossal wide body kit, complete with a cavernous rear diffuser. Safety elements such as a roll cage, race seat and harnesses are visible, as are the wheels and tire combination that appears to be optimized for asphalt. Last year, 2011, marked the end of the dusty era of Pikes Peak—the dirt portions of the road will be paved in time for the 2012 event.
Mitsubishi to attack 2012 Pikes Peak with i-Miev
Mitsubishi has yet to release details on any upgrades to the powertrain other than that it will use EV components off the production i-Miev. Engineers from Mitsubishi will be supported by its partners in batteries, electric motors and other compnents. Data gathered from ascending near 1500 meters to the 4300 summit will provide invaluable data regarding the durability and any affects of altitude on the electrical systems.
Hiroshi Masuoka has been announced as the driver for the event. Masuoka has competed in the Dakar Rally 21 times, winning it in Mitsubishis in 2002 and 2003 (Mitsubishi Pajero in the former year, a Mitsubishi Pajero Evolution in the latter). Let’s see if he can bring his luck back to the diamond star make.

Two Monsters will Electrify Pikes Peak Hill Climb Spectators

Two Monsters will Electrify Pikes Peak Hill Climb Spectators:
Two Monsters will Electrify Pikes Peak Hill Climb Spectators
It looks like the 90th running of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb in Colorado on July 8 will be historic.
Firstly, the 12.42 mile long course is now paved the whole way to the top of the 14,110-feet mountain. If the weather cooperates it should be possible for someone to break the record set last year when it was mostly paved.
Japan’s Nobuhiro “Monster” Tajima, driving a highly modified Suzuki in the Unlimited division, set that new course record at 9:51.278 minutes – the first time the elusive ten-minute barrier had been broken. Tajima has won the division and the overall crown six straight times.
This year though “Monster” aims to break his own record in an electric car that was unveiled in Japan this week by Team APEV (Association for the Promotion of Electric Vehicles). Few details of the prototype electric race car have been disclosed but it will have two motors and a regenerative braking system.
It will be amazing to watch him silently(?) tackle the “Race to the Clouds” in what should be an electrifying event.
Two Monsters will Electrify Pikes Peak Hill Climb Spectators

John Buffum wins Pikes Peak in 1982 – photo by Lisa Rettie/Trackside Photo
Those who want to hear what they see will probably be more excited to know that Audi is bringing over the famous “Monster” 600-bhp Audi Sport Quattro S1 that Walter Röhrl drove up the mountain in 1987. He broke the record that year after it had been set and broken several times in the previous years since Audi first tackled the hill climb with a Audi Quattro rally car driven by John Buffum in 1982. Sadly Röhrl will not be going for a record but will be making an exhibition run in the “Monster” Audi.
Rally cars – or at least unique specials derived from rally cars – have essentially dominated the hill climb for the past 30 years. Could electric-powered race cars – there are several entered this year — dominate this unique race from now on?

Steve Saleen is Saleen Again

Steve Saleen is Saleen Again:
Steve Saleen
It was a surprise in 2007 when Steve Saleen left the company he founded in 1984 and that bore his name. Management differences with the then controlling partners caused the split, with Saleen the man leaving to found SMS Supercars and Saleen the company continuing the existing line of Saleen Mustangs.
Lawsuits inevitably followed, and today Steve Saleen announced all suits are settled, with himself regaining control of the Saleen brand.
If nothing else this certainly means less confusion because once again a Saleen is a Saleen. But so is an SMS supercar according to Mr. Saleen. Including the cars he built under the SMS banner as “Saleens,” Mr. Saleen says any SMS owner who wishes to rebrand such a car as a Saleen may now do so, with Saleen supplying the badges.
Steve Saleen is Saleen Again
The SMS cars are also being added to the Saleen registry; otherwise expect SMS Supercars to fold quietly into the Saleen brand.
Saleen says he’ll offer the 4V, SC, SSC and X Saleen models of the 2013 Mustang, 2012 Challenger and 2012 Camaro.
Parts sales are also a big part of Saleen’s plans. He is planning to sell every Saleen aftermarket, replacement and warranty part since 1984. Parts are available via Saleen dealers; www. Saleen.com or 800 888-8945, which is the old SMS Supercars number.
