The Continental: ESP Now Mandatory in Europe, and Some Tech News from Germany

The Continental: ESP Now Mandatory in Europe, and Some Tech News from Germany:

The Continental

Each week, our German correspondent slices and dices the latest rumblings, news, and quick-hit driving impressions from the other side of the pond. His byline may say Jens Meiners, but we simply call him . . . the Continental.

Mandatory nanny: In the EU, new cars with type approval awarded after November 1 must be equipped with a stability-control system. Cars that are already approved but don’t have ESP, such as the Land Rover Defender, get a brief pass: They can be sold without the nanny system for another three years, until November 1, 2014. Patented by supplier Robert Bosch in 1987, the system made its first appearance in the large Mercedes-Benz coupes eight years later. I assume most readers are familiar with it; the system is capable of braking each wheel individually to counter under- and oversteer. That’s good, and it arguably has reduced the number of severe accidents here. The annoying part is that the system doesn’t care whether you lost control of the car or merely wish to put it into a nice drift. Oversteer is killed off, and in many cars the stability control can’t be disabled, or only partly disabled. Cross these cars off my personal shopping list, please. And thanks, “Europe,” for the additional regulation.

The new BMW 3-series will be available with a head-up display, which is cool. I loved them on the late 1980s and early 1990s Nissans and GM vehicles, and was mystified by their disappearance. Having speed—and, nowadays, navigation directions—projected on the windscreen takes away a major distraction and allows you to keep your eyes on the road all the time. BMW’s 3-series uses a four-color projection, like the latest 5-, 6- and 7-series, and the X3. The fighter-jet aesthetics of the HUD are cool and contemporary, and they fit the new 3 well.

German car magazine Auto Bild reports that Mercedes-Benz will offer an ultra-lightweight derivative of the next-generation E-class, which—thanks to extensive use of carbon fiber—would tip the scales at almost 800 pounds less than its conventional, steel-bodied sister model. Sadly, those savings will be at least partly eaten up by the baggage that “alternative powertrains” bring with them, such as batteries and hydrogen tanks. Auto Bild further reports that Mercedes is considering a similar variation of the B-class, called—I am not kidding—”B clever.” And there could be another supercar positioned above the SLS AMG, with a carbon-fiber structure and highly contemporary design. Such a car would be a worthy successor of the C111 rotary-powered supercar, which almost made it into production in the early 1970s, before the oil crisis struck.

The fact that carmakers are seriously looking at weight reduction is great news. To me, Audi is a pioneer in this field, followed by Jaguar, with its fully aluminum structure and bodies. But cost has kept the technology confined to the luxury segment. As early as the mid-1990s, Audi had internally calculated the A6 as a fully aluminum car, like the A8, and then decided against it. It would have cost thousands more to produce.

Germany’s premium carmakers are struggling to create credible sub-brands for their “alterative propulsion” vehicles. Strictly speaking from a marketing point of view, BMW has done a superb job with its i sub-brand that will initially comprise of the i3 subcompact and i8 coupe (which is a plug-in hybrid, not an electric). It is not yet clear how much of the unique design language will be translated into the series-production models, but for now the products look convincing, and the “story” is coherent.

Audi e-tron Spyder concept

Audi’s e-tron seems a bit less ambitious, despite a number of very promising concept cars. But the first series-production models—the R8 e-tron and likely the A1 e-tron—are obvious derivatives of conventional Audis. Even less convincing—again, from a marketing point of view—is Daimler’s E-Cell and F-Cell strategy. Daimler has been talking about these vehicles for too long; there have been prototypes on the road for ages. There is an electric Smart, but Smart’s image has severely suffered in the past few years. Plus, the car has just about nothing in common with the SLS E-Cell, which describes the other end of the scale. Moreover, despite its share in the company, Daimler gets no kudos for the Tesla Model S, and good news about its Chinese cooperation partner BYD has become sparse. It would be undeserved if Daimler’s efforts on electric vehicles and fuel cells get drowned out, because, of the three premium carmakers in Germany, Daimler has arguably put the most consistent and sustained effort into alternative powertrains.

In an interview with German magazine Focus, Porsche CEO Matthias Müller restated his target to offer seven model ranges with a seven-year cycle, so that there is “great news” from Porsche every year. He claims that Porsche is serious about E-mobility, as evidenced by three Boxster E models (which are heavily subsidized by the government) currently roaming the Stuttgart area. Really? He also has this to say: “We will not see a breakthrough of this technology in the next five years.” An electric 911? “No experiments.” And here’s the real good news from Müller: “The E-hype will motivate further development of the internal-combustion engine.”

2013 Ford Focus ST Headed to L.A. Auto Show; Debuting New Torque-Steer Compensation System

2013 Ford Focus ST Headed to L.A. Auto Show; Debuting New Torque-Steer Compensation System:

Good news, everyone. The long-awaited Ford Focus ST is coming to the 2011 Los Angeles auto show. If you didn’t know yet, the Focus ST is essentially the same car worldwide (except for a wagon version that we won’t see here). What does this mean? It means that the Focus ST we’ll see in L.A. is pretty much the same Focus ST we saw in Frankfurt, which you can read about here. Official North American horsepower figures haven’t been announced yet, but in Europe the car makes 247 hp and 266 lb-ft of torque, so expect our version to arrive with numbers in that neighborhood.

More news: the ST will come with a torque-steer compensation scheme using its electronic power-assisted steering (EPAS). When the system senses torque steer, EPAS reacts by varying the torque of the power-assistance motor to dampen out the effects of torque steer. Unlike the trick (and expensive) RevoKnuckle found on the previous Ford Focus RS, torque-steer compensation deals with the symptom and not the cause. But still, we’re excited to see how the Focus drives when it comes out early next year.

Oh, and there also will be that sweet turnkey Focus race car, dubbed ST-R. It too is the same as the one we saw in Frankfurt but we’ll happily take another peek at its awesomeness in L.A.

2013 Volkswagen Golf MkVII Rendered, Again: Styling Comes Into Focus

2013 Volkswagen Golf MkVII Rendered, Again: Styling Comes Into Focus:

As the seventh-generation VW Golf nears production, we’re getting a better idea of what to expect. The new car will be lighter, more efficient, and more agile than the current, sixth-generation Golf thanks to an entirely new architecture called MQB. That’s German for “Modularer Querbaukasten,” or modular transverse platform. It will be used throughout the VW Group, and the vast economies of scale will allow VW to spend the money where it counts. Expect premium-class technologies, dual-clutch transmissions, engines with up to 300 hp (a figure reserved for the next R model), hybrid and electric versions, and a level of material quality unknown to this vehicle segment. Many—but not all—of these goodies will be offered in the U.S.

The styling gets more angular and aggressive, and our artist also predicts a few glitzy elements. The front bumper is graced, Passat-like, with cornering lamps and fog lights surrounded by chrome strips, and chrome also intersects the taillights, which resemble the units used on the current Golf cabriolet. LED daytime running lights, which will be part of a European-market xenon package, create a visual signature. A rising line that runs from the front to the rear wheel arches helps to mask the height of the Golf’s flanks.

We dig what we see—even if it is only a well-educated guess—and we’re eager to see if and by how much the MkVII Golf improves on the excellent MkVI.

Audi e-tron Spyder Concept Driven: It Might Be Love

Audi e-tron Spyder Concept Driven: It Might Be Love:

Audi e-tron Spyder concept

We wouldn’t say “production-ready,” but we will say this: Wow.

The cop is clearly pushing his Crown Victoria police interceptor, but he can’t lose us—his lights are flashing wildly; he pulls ahead on the straightaways, but we catch up in the corners. Several miles up Mulholland Highway northwest of Los Angeles, he’s had enough. The officer yanks his cruiser around and blocks the road. Our drive is over. But as we get out of the car, he flashes a big smile. This time, the law is on our side.

We drive and test three new Accents so you can just pick one.

We’re nothing if not thorough. In assessing the 2012 Hyundai Accent, we chose to test not one, not two, but three different variants: a hatchback with the manual transmission, a sedan with the automatic, and, to get the full picture, a hatch with the auto. Yes, we could have tested that fourth body/transmission permutation, but that would’ve been silly.

Look Out, Halo Warthog: Rock Monster Wheels Brings Heavy Weapon to SEMA

Look Out, Halo Warthog: Rock Monster Wheels Brings Heavy Weapon to SEMA:

Company representatives tell us that Hutchinson Industries spends about 90 percent of its time focused on military projects, and that includes the manufacture of Rock Monster wheels. The unique two-sided bead lockers are the rare DOT-approved tire clamps, but that’s not what drew our attention to this olive-drab Wrangler.

What did would be the minigun on the roll bar. It’s an intimidating piece, but fear not. It only shoots plastic BBs. Actually, maybe you should fear: It fires about 10 of the little stingers a second. In other words, it’s firing roughly one tiny plastic pellet with every rotation of the engine’s crankshaft at redline. But normally 6000 rpm wouldn’t hurt as much as standing in front of this, um, “toy” would.

Last Rides Cremation Urns: Not the Quickest Rides, but Poetic

Last Rides Cremation Urns: Not the Quickest Rides, but Poetic:

So you’re dead and you’ve been cremated; now what? Get scattered in a warm ocean breeze? Be used as fertilizer for a young tree? This author considered being mixed into a dry rub to season a roasted lamb, but figures not enough family and friends would see the humor he sees in it. And nothing would be worse than dying and then being just leftovers.

Last Rides is a couple of guys who are more the ashes-on-the-mantle type, but really love their cars. So they came up with an idea: custom-made cremation urns modeled after the eternal occupant’s favorite car. All you do is submit a few pictures of the car which you’d like the urn to look like, and then wait. The urns are clay, and take roughly two to three months to make. Pricing depends on the car—simple shapes take less time to sculpt than, say, a ’32 Ford roadster with no fenders and an exposed engine—but we’re told that $2000 to $2500 is an average starting point. Nelson Racing Engines Twin-Turbo 632: The Bugatti Veyron of Crate Motors

Nelson Racing Engines Twin-Turbo 632: The Bugatti Veyron of Crate Motors:

Grabbing headlines was easy for the Bugatti Veyron. Sure, there’s the 253-mph top speed, but there are a lot of other stupefying numbers associated with the car. Sixteen cylinders, four turbos, $25,000 tires (that’s a complete set, at least), and $123,200 transmission, not to mention the price tag, which varies based on the strength of the dollar but is reliably around $1.5 million.

Tom Nelson and his company, Nelson Racing Engines, had a sort of Bugatti of crate engines at SEMA. At 632 cubic inches, it’s fairly standard for a mondo motor, but the output is Veyron insane. Running pump gas, the twin-turbo 10.4-liter V-8 will shame the French wonder, with a screaming 1400 horsepower and 1400 lb-ft of torque. Fill the tank with race gas, and output rockets to 2300 hp and 2100 lb-ft, or more than twice what the Bugatti makes. It’s easy to make outrageous claims, but Nelson has the reputation to back them up—and for more than just a few quarter-mile passes. Appropriately, this bruiser carries a Veyron-esque price tag: $52,000.

Chevrolet News for ’99: Trucks. Corvette. Bi-Fuel Cavalier! [Chevrolet Centennial, 1990s Edition]:

Chevrolet is marking its 100th anniversary this week. To celebrate, we’re republishing two posts per day from our blog archives, each one plucked from a different decade of the marque’s long existence.

Well! It’s been an interesting century, hasn’t it? In a few months, the calendar will tick over to 1999. Everyone and their mother is playing that stupid Prince song, O.J. is still on the search for Nicole’s real killer—that will work out, we have faith—and you might have found our Internet Web Site by searching on something called Goggle Google. And people are saying Apple Computer is going to be relevant again. Riiiight.

So the century ends. Whither the bow tie? Back in the day, Chevrolet tweaked its entire lineup every year. Here, we get half effort. The Corvette line gains a new, lighter and cheaper hardtop coupe; Camaro Z28s and SSs now have a standard Torsen limited-slip. The big focus is on Chevy trucks and SUVs, which are selling so well, you’d think fuel is close to a buck a gallon. (Oh, wait. It is.) An all-new Silverado arrives this fall, along with a new Tracker and TrailBlazer model. The only major change to Chevy’s car lineup is the arrival of the bi-fuel Cavalier sedan, a version of the four-door Cav that can run on either gasoline or compressed natural gas. Thankfully, you can still buy the (aging) F-body Camaro. It’s a good, or at least entertaining, car that makes up for . . . well, that makes up for the Cavalier.

All things considered, the company’s position is interesting. In just over a decade, Chevrolet will be 100 years old. There’s momentum here, but not a lot of interesting product. Word out of Milford is that the next Corvette will be—my kids taught me this—the bomb. Time will tell.
