Porsche 360˚ App: Gyrate Your iPad/iPhone for 360-Degree View During Hot Lap

Porsche 360˚ App: Gyrate Your iPad/iPhone for 360-Degree View During Hot Lap: "

Forget Angry Birds and other goofy, time-wasting apps that beep and boop at you while you accomplish pointless tasks—Porsche has created Porsche 360˚, an app we can feel good about using to kill some time. The 360˚ app beckons with an immersive in-car experience that takes clever advantage of the built-in gyroscopes in Apple iPads, iPhones, and iPod touches. Users “ride along” in the passenger seat of a Porsche 911 as Dutch racing driver Jeroen Bleekemolen wheels it around the Zandvoort track in the Netherlands; the direction of the “camera” can be controlled through a full 360-degree range by tilting and turning the iPad. The only real bummer is that the app is currently only available in the Dutch iTunes store, but Porsche plans on releasing more 360˚ “experiences” soon. Hopefully the app will migrate to other markets as more in-car editions become available. In the meantime, check out what we are missing in the promo video below.

Ford Releases Slick-Looking Fiesta Sport Special Edition for Europe

Ford Releases Slick-Looking Fiesta Sport Special Edition for Europe: "

As part of its One Ford initiative, Ford has made world cars of its latest Focus and Fiesta, but there are some models we still don’t get. Take this Fiesta Sport Special Edition, for example. This isn’t the first sporty, cool-looking Fiesta model Ford has kept from us, however: the automaker chose to leave the Fiesta 1600S—and all three-door Fiestas, for that matter—overseas. (At least we should get a turbocharged Fiesta ST soon.) To create the Fiesta Sport Special Edition, Ford started with a three-door Fiesta hatch and pretty much added the same bits that made up the Fiesta 1600S, including that car’s 132-hp, 1.6-liter gas engine; sport exhaust; aggressive front fascia and side skirts; a rear diffuser and spoiler; and black or silver 17-inch wheels. The Sport Special Edition also carries over the 1600S’s automatic climate control, leather handbrake and shift knob, and heated leather sport seats.

The Fiesta Sport Special Edition differs from the 1600S in that it will be available in more than two colors (seven, to be exact), and won’t offer the 1600S’s contrasting stripe package. Furthermore, the grille is rimmed with a thin strip of silver trim, as are the two front fog lights (the S1600’s were trimmed in black) and the exhaust tips. Interestingly, the Fiesta Sport Special Edition also offers Ford’s 93-hp, 1.6-liter diesel four-cylinder, although those versions will ride on smaller 16-inch wheels.

ABT Sportsline Dials Up Anthropomorphic Menace for New VW Beetle

ABT Sportsline Dials Up Anthropomorphic Menace for New VW Beetle: "

German tuner Hans-Jürgen Abt has decided that the latest Volkswagen Beetle requires more zip. As a result, his company—aptly dubbed ABT Sportsline—whipped up this package as an homage to Abt’s first car, a Beetle which featured a 90-hp Microbus engine and what he refers to as “pert bodywork.” (Herr Abt is the only tuner we’re aware of who has described one of his creations as “pert.” We find this both odd and refreshing.)

The supplied photos suggest that hunkered-down, cross-eyed, vaguely anthropomorphic menace was the goal this time around, “pert” be damned. The package includes a full ground-effects kit, oval exhaust tips, 19-in wheels, and new springs. Of course, Beetle owners can mix and match components to taste and budget.

As far as engine mods are concerned, ABT has no firm numbers, but claims that the 2.0T package will likely produce between 230 and 240 hp, while the 2.0-liter diesel will make around 170 hp. Both would represent a 30-to-40-hp bump over VW’s stock units. The line is currently Euro-focused, so we have no word on impending CARB legality for California customers or whether anything will be offered for the 2.5-liter inline-five, which isn’t sold in Europe.

Also, no word as to whether ABT Sportsline has also developed an add-on bud vase for those Beetle loyalists who’d like to upgrade to the new model but fear for their flora’s display and hydration needs due to VW’s thoughtless abandonment of what was previously the signature interior feature.

2012 Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Black Series Leaks Early Via French Site

2012 Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Black Series Leaks Early Via French Site: "

As with every Black Series before it, the new C63 AMG Coupe isn’t likely to disappoint.

We’re expecting full details about the upcoming (and very sinister) 2012 Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Black Series within days, but it seems some Frenchmen at SpeedFans.fr have beaten everyone to the punch with pictures from a launch event on their home turf. (The full set of pics is currently not accessible, but keep checking here to see if they’re restored.)

What we can tell from what we’ve seen is that the AMG crew has one-upped itself again—it almost seems like the Mercedes management built the C-class coupe for the sole purpose of creating something cooler than the wicked CLK63 AMG Black Series. The photos also prove that we missed the mark in our original report on this car, where we predicted it would adopt AMG’s new 5.5-liter twin-turbo V-8. We can clearly see from the fender badges that it instead sticks with the normal C63’s 6.2-liter, although power will rise from the non-Black model’s 451 hp (or 481 hp with the Development Package) to more than 500. Figure on a price pushing $100K.

We’ll hold off on any other numerical prognostication until we have a full briefing from Mercedes-Benz, although we will direct your attention to the unique Black Series one-piece shell seats. (They likely won’t make it to U.S.-spec models, so don’t get too attached.) We’ll bring you a full report just as soon as the info hits our desks.

2013 BMW 3-series sedan (spy photo)

Much has been made of BMW’s upcoming iteration of its guns-and-butter 3-series. In fact, we have made much of it here. So here’s a refresher. We’ve delivered a mix of hard news and speculation, shown you the car on the autobahn, sneaked a glance at the interior, and now we’ve got photos of it lapping—and subsequently being hauled away from—the Nürburgring. Given the presence of the light-bar-equipped Chevy S-10, we can assume said tow job was not exactly planned. Meanwhile, gaze upon the even-less-camo’d new 3er taking an unintended breather.

U.S.-Market Land Rovers to Get Eight-Speed ZF Transmission for 2013

U.S.-Market Land Rovers to Get Eight-Speed ZF Transmission for 2013: "

2010 Land Rover Range Rover Sport (European-spec)

Several Land Rover models sold in the U.S. will receive a ZF-sourced eight-speed automatic transmission for the 2013 model year, a source within the company has told us. We expect that the Range Rover Sport, its close sibling, the LR4, and the international-arms-dealer special, the Range Rover, all will feature the gearbox when they go on sale some time in the second half of 2012.

Diesel versions of the Range Rover Sport and LR4, which aren’t sold in the States, are being fitted with the ZF gearbox right now as part of a broader powertrain upgrade for 2012. They are also switching to a rotary gear selector like that in Jaguar’s cars, and we assume that when the eight-speed is installed in U.S.-bound Land Rovers, we’ll see the puck move here.

This eight-speed transmission does duty in vehicles from a number of brands, including Audi, Bentley, and BMW; Chrysler has licensed the design for assembly at its own plant for use in the new 300 and Charger, among many other models. We expect that it will help bump fuel economy across the Land Rover lineup—relatively speaking, of course—and the box’s more closely spaced ratios may improve acceleration, too.

Hagerty Insurance Wants You to Help Celebrate Collector Car Appreciation Day

Hagerty Insurance Wants You to Help Celebrate Collector Car Appreciation Day: "

Did you know that this Friday is Collector Car Appreciation Day? This marks the second year that SEMA has lured the U.S. Senate away from more-pressing matters to designate the second Friday in July as such, and we admit we are a bit perturbed that we don’t get the day off. Maybe once Collector Car Appreciation Day progresses from annually renewed observance to federal holiday . . .

We’re just planning to celebrate by grilling out in the office parking lot, but Hagerty Insurance—valiant guardian of classic and collector cars—has bigger plans. The company is gathering 10 vintage cars ranging from a prewar Packard to a split-window Corvette at the Automotive Hall of Fame in Dearborn, Michigan, to teach local kids the ins and outs of classic-car ownership and maintenance. This is the first so-called Hagerty Driving Experience, but the company has plans to develop it into a national program with dates throughout the year. As this month also marks the one-year anniversary of our Save the Manuals! campaign, we were pleased to note that the syllabus includes lessons on driving a manual transmission. We’ll be on hand with our self-propelled StM billboard, but admit that learning to drive a stick in a Mazda 2 might not be quite as memorable as learning on a Packard.

Sound fun? Hagerty is accepting a limited number of participants, but still has a couple of spots open. If you’re between 16 and 20 years old and will be in Dearborn this Friday, e-mail Tabetha Salsbury at tsalsbury@hagerty.com to register. It’s free, so why wouldn’t you?

June 2011 Sales: What the Headlines Don’t Tell You

June 2011 Sales: What the Headlines Don’t Tell You: "

Fiat 500 Sport

Take a look at coverage of this month’s auto sales in the mainstream media and you’ll hear a consistent narrative: sales are up, Ford and Chrysler are selling cars in huge numbers, and Americans are choosing smaller vehicles. On face, these statements are true, but when you parse the stats, it’s a less-promising picture. The market is shifting: Nameplates that were once attached to what were universally thought of as small cars are now on vehicles big enough to house a family comfortably, and they do it with decent power and excellent fuel economy (the Honda Civic being one example). Automakers and individual cars can post gains, but no longer is just one vehicle dominant in a segment; look at our breakdown of April’s sales and you can see that several models have a roughly equal—though still big—cut of compact sedan sales. This brings us to June, when most companies sold a lot of a little.

Fiat’s 500 miniaturizes Mini’s sales

When the Fiat 500 launched earlier this year, the company’s president, Sergio Marchionne, said bullishly that the company would sell roughly 50,000 examples this year in the U.S. and Canada. For the sake of comparison, the slightly larger, more-powerful, better-established Mini hardtop and convertible sold just over 45,000 units in 2010—so Fiat’s aim with the Cinquecento is ambitious, to say the least.

And so far, it’s also been wildly inaccurate. Although 500 cars shipped in March to shoppers who preordered the special Prima Edizione version, true sales began in April. Including those first cars, through the end of June, Fiat had managed only 4944 sales of the small hatchback. If Fiat was going to sell 45,000 units in nine months (April through December), the company should have racked up 15,000 sales by now. Yet despite being at only one-ninth of the annual sales goal and 10,000 cars behind schedule, Mr. Marchionne told reporters in June that he expected the 500 to hit sales targets anyway. What’s holding it back from success? Only 70 of the 140 approved dealerships are actually open for business. The 500C cabriolet is just hitting lots now, which should add some interest. Perhaps most worrying, though, is that the issue goes deeper: Americans don’t need tiny vehicles for urban parking, and beyond that, don’t want to put up with the compromises of a 101-hp hatchback that delivers less-than-astonishing fuel economy.

A Sad Anniversary for Mercury Fans—And Former Dealers

Date on which Ford announced it had decided to kill the Mercury brand: June 2, 2010

Headline of press release delivering the news: FORD TO EXPAND LINCOLN LINEUP AND BRAND EMPHASIS; MERCURY PRODUCTION ENDS IN FOURTH QUARTER OF 2010

Total Mercury sales during the first half of 2010: 50,930

Total Lincoln sales during the first half of 2010: 43,762

Total Lincoln sales during the first half of 2011: 42,003

What the numbers reveal: There’s no debating that Mercury had no identity of its own for the past decade—if not longer. But the expectation that many Mercury shoppers would be corralled into Lincoln turned out to be a dud. Some may have shifted to Ford, but certainly not 50,000 of them. Meanwhile, Lincoln continues to struggle and won’t be seeing any fresh products until the arrival of a vehicle to be previewed by a concept at next January’s Detroit auto show.

Range Rover > Land Rover

June 2011 sales of the Range Rover Sport, Land Rover’s bestselling model in this country: 1233

June 2011 sales of the Range Rover, which starts at $79,865: 935

Other models sold here under the Land Rover name: LR2, LR4

Total June 2011 sales for all Land Rover models combined: 3152

June 2010 sales of the BMW X5: 3157

What the numbers reveal: We see two trends here worth noting: First, considering the high starting prices of the Range Rover Sport ($60,495) and the Range Rover, the sales of those two models are actually quite good. The Range Rover outsold the BMW 7-series and several other high-end luxury cars. Second, the Range Rover brand has more value at this point than Land Rover does. In the world of mainstream crossovers, a single lower-priced model—BMW’s X5—outsells the entire Land Rover lineup. The Range Rover Sport was conceived to compete in this territory, but starts at roughly $13,000 more than the X5 does. The LR4 and LR2, which do without the extra cachet of the Range Rover badge, are getting creamed in their segments. It’s no wonder the company has fashioned its upcoming Evoque as a Range Rover—even if its high price tag and smaller stature might scare off some shoppers.

Volkswagen’s Luggage

Combined June 2011 sales of Volkswagen, Audi, and Bentley: 38,673

Number of vehicles by which this exceeds June 2010 sales for those brands: 8905

Increase in Jetta sales from June 2010 to June 2011: 8020

What the numbers reveal: While sales of the new Jetta aren’t off the charts in comparison with mainstream competitors like the Chevy Cruze—which itself was the bestselling car in the country this June—that it accounts for almost the entire increase in Volkswagen Group sales should tell you how important it is to the company. To cut VeeDub some slack, it’s worth keeping in mind that the company went without a Beetle and Passat in June, with all-new generations of those cars hitting dealerships soon. We’ve got a suspicion the Jetta won’t have to shoulder the company’s sales load for too much longer.

2014 Land Rover Range Rover spy photo

We spy a prototype for the next Rover, and would you believe it’s boxy?

Even for a vehicle with such historically long lifecycles, the Land Rover Range Rover is overdue for a full updating. You may remember that the current truck was designed under BMW ownership, updated by Ford, and recently got new engines and an interior under Tata rule. One generation, three parent companies. Three consecutive British prime ministers have no doubt ridden in them, too. Fortunately, as these spy photos—and those we previously captured—suggest, an all-new Rover family is just around the bend.

2013 Bentley Continental GT Speed Spy Photos: Flaunting Your Power is So Gauche

2013 Bentley Continental GT Speed Spy Photos: Flaunting Your Power is So Gauche: "

2012 Bentley Continental GT Speed spy photo

Stealth Speed: Flaunting your power is so gauche.

By the time Bentley had finished proliferating its initial Continental line, first offered as a coupe for 2004, no fewer than eight models were on the docket, including convertible and sedan body styles with 552-hp 12-cylinder engines, 600-hp “Speed” versions of all three, and for coupe and ragtop models, lighter Supersports versions with 621 hp. Now, with the second-generation Continental GT coupe on sale around the world, the rollout of variants is set to commence, and the two-door Speed, caught here by our wily spy photographers, looks like it’s in the hole. (We have it on good authority that the regular-grade GTC will appear next, at this fall’s Frankfurt show.)

Range Rover Evoque Production Begins

Range Rover Evoque Production Begins: "

Evoque-land-rover

Production of Range Rover’s mould-breaking Evoque has started at its Halewood plant in the UK. With 18,000 advanced orders on the books already, the Evoque is likely to prove to be one of the most successful products in the marque’s line-up.

Jaguar Land Rover’s CEO, Ralf Speth together with JLR executive officers, union representatives and employees, gathered to celebrate the start of new Range Rover Evoque production. The first car to come off the line will be donated to the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust.

Halewood Operations is central to the success of the Evoque, with the workforce doubling to more than 3000 employees in order to deliver the new model. 75 percent of production is destined for export to more than 170 countries around the world, adding around $3.2 billion to the UK economy. Moreover, 50 percent of the components in new Evoque are made in Britain, with contracts worth another $3.2 billion awarded to more than 40 UK supplier businesses.

“It is a groundbreaking product, a Range Rover with concept car looks, lightweight technologies and the capability to deliver 50 mpg fuel economy. At the same time it’s still a true Range Rover that’s agile, nimble, designed to survive in the urban jungle and capable of tackling the toughest climates and terrains thanks to Land Rover’s legendary all-wheel drive expertise.” Speth added

The launch of the Range Rover Evoque is just one of 40 new product actions that Jaguar Land Rover will carry out in the next five years in the most ambitious market offensive in the history of its two brands. This product creation program is supported by an annual investment of $2.4 billion in developing new models, engines, technologies and vehicle lines.

Gone in 60 Seconds – Bentley Ice Record Breaking Continental Supersports at Goodwood

Gone in 60 Seconds – Bentley Ice Record Breaking Continental Supersports at Goodwood: "

IMG_7686

The phone rings – it is Bentley’s PR man, Richard Durbin “I see you’re going to Goodwood for the Festival. How would you like to go up the hill with Juha Kankkunen in the ice record breaking Continental?”

I’ve known Richard for years, but I have to say that is one of the most redundant questions I’ve been asked ranking alongside when an Aston PR person inquired if I wanted to drive a prototype Vantage, with 550 bhp and 555 lb.-ft. of torque and capable of ripping to 60 mph in about four seconds, to the Frankfurt auto show some years back.

What did Richard think I was going to say? “Er, no thanks I rather be having my strawberries and cream.” Of course I was going to say yes, who wouldn’t turn down the opportunity to experience Goodwood’s hill climb at the side of a four times World Rally Champion and winner of 23 rounds of the WRC?

IMG_0188

It’s not the first time I’ve been ferried up the hill: Blomqvist drove me up in the Audi quattro S1 and, of course, last year I went up in a Lotus – well a Lotus built hydrogen powered London Black Cab.

Famously Kankkunen drove this black Bentley to 205.48 mph on a 10-mile ice track off the Finnish coast on the Baltic. The ice, Juha, explained was nearly 30 inches thick, enough to support the car’s weight at the speeds he’d be travelling at. I didn’t appreciate it until he told me that there are different types of ice that can make or break record attempts: too cold, like -4°F and the surface becomes “super slippery” so the tires, studded or winter tires that have more contact with the surface, lose grip. At 32°F the surface is, according, to Juha “sticky” and the denser air aids the blown W12 engine – which also runs on ethanol to get even more torque.

The Continental Supersports is remarkably standard with all the leather and carbon fiber trim retained, even the carpets. Mechanically it’s pretty standard, too, except for longer gearing that would take it to 217 mph, a stout roll cage and roof panel, wheel discs to prevent the build up of snow and ice particles on the rims, a small ducktail spoiler to help aerodynamic balance and, oh yes, a parachute. “That’s in case I get too sideways, it will help to pull the car back into a straight line as well as slowing the car down at the end of each run.”

IMG_7691

We rumble up to the start as a Lamborghini Gallardo driven by a local journo squeals its tires off the line. Ten seconds later Juha buries the throttle and 479 lb.-ft. tries to tear the big Pirelli’s off their rims accompanied by a small chirrup as they bite into the tarmac.

Juha’s hugging the left side of the track and we’re already hitting over 70 mph as he brakes and flicks it into the first right-hander, hard on the throttle into the long right hander that leads into Park Straight the left pair of wheels scrabbling for grip on the grass. There’s no let up in the acceleration as the big W-12 rumbles away and we’re hitting three figures as we pass under the footbridge. Hard on the brakes for the notorious Molecombe Corner that catches the unwary, and then it’s the long blast up hill towards the intimidating Flint Wall that appears from the left to shrink the already slim track even more, there’s slight lift as Kankkunen threads the car through the gap between wall and trees. But the Bentley feels remarkably composed at all times as once again he accelerates it hard up Pheasantry Hill towards Carnés Seat.

It’s now that we get the first glimpse of the Lambo that Juha is bearing down on, within yards we’re so close we can almost smell the passenger’s perfume and I detect a slight feathering of the throttle from Juha as we cruise up to the finish line at 90 mph.

“60 seconds,” I yell across at Kankkunen. “Ah we could have gone faster,” he laughs pointing at the slowing Lambo ahead.

But it was still a great run that demonstrates just how nimble this 5400lbs car can be.

And another ice record attempt by Juha? “For sure, why not? I know I and the car can go quicker.”
