Carlsson CK63 RS – 2012 Geneva Auto Show

Carlsson CK63 RS – 2012 Geneva Auto Show

Geneva Auto Show is great for giving the little guy a chance to shine alongside automotive power players. Tuning companies and boutique supercar firms share floor-space with the largest automakers in the world, so the pressure is on everyone to step up their game and grab some attention. Carlsson Autotechnik is off to a good start, thanks to its new CK63 RS sports sedan that’s based on the latest Mercedes-Benz CLS63 AMG.

Carlsson CK63 RS – 2012 Geneva Auto Show

Power from the twin-turbo V-8 has jumped from 557 bhp in the standard car, up to 652 bhp in the CK63 RS. That should launch the car from 0 to 60 mph in 4.1 seconds, according to Carlsson. Other mechanical changes include a stainless steel exhaust system – with driver adjustable controls to raise or lower the exhaust note – along with an additional transmission oil cooling system for the AMG Speedshift 7-speed automatic.

New front springs lower the car by 30 mm, to help sharpen the handling, and Carlsson’s 20-in. lightweight alloy wheels can be had in “Titanium Edition,” “Graphite Edition” or “Brilliant Edition” finishes. The cabin, like most tuner cars, is trimmed in higher quality leather and a wide variety of wood and metal finishes. Yet Carlsson has gone one step further and equipped the CK63 RS for the business traveler. A Viprinet Multichannel VPN Router 500 has been fitted, to guarantee a “completely stable high-speed Internet connection…even at high speeds,” says Carlsson.

With more than 600 horsepower on tap, we’re hoping CK63 RS drivers opt to update their Facebook status while parked.

First Drive: 2012 Fiat Panda

First Drive: 2012 Fiat Panda:

2012 Fiat Panda

-two years and 6.4 million sales after Fiat launched Giugiaro’s flat-paneled Panda, the Italians have produced this third generation of what was originally described as a ‘peasants’ car.

2012 Fiat Panda

Well, it has matured somewhat over the decades and morphed into a quite sophisticated urban car. Some may argue about what is described as its ‘squircle’ design themes, but in the metal it has a functionality to it that is quite appealing while the interior is enhanced with Panda motifs on the trim.

2012 Fiat Panda

Fiat does small cars very well and this one is no exception. “It’s not about size but how you use it,” I was told when I asked about the 14 storage compartments dotted about the cabin.

2012 Fiat Panda

This latest Panda manages to combine sufficient leg and head room for a couple of six-footers with a modicum of space for child-sized rear-seat occupants, even if the driving position was a tad too high for my liking.

2012 Fiat Panda

On the road it performs with verve, the Twinair revving with abandon, although that will ultimately detract from overall fuel consumption figures. There’s a Multijet diesel as well that will be more popular across the Channel, though less so here in the UK where the additional purchase price and the higher cost of diesel mitigates against small capacity diesels.

2012 Fiat Panda

The most popular engine of all is likely to be the 1.2-liter Fire, good enough for 45 (US) mpg, 102 mph and 14.2 secs to 62 mph.

2012 Fiat Panda

The ride for a small car (it only has a 90-in. wheelbase) is surprisingly supple and the steering communicative and well weighted.

2012 Fiat Panda

There’s a four-wheel-drive version, using a viscous coupling to the rear wheels, due in the fall and it’s even rumored that there is going to be a hot version.

G&S Exclusive Maserati 4200 Evo

G&S Exclusive Maserati 4200 Evo:

G&S Exclusive Maserati 4200 Evo

Has the romance fizzled between you and that Maserati Coupe that’s been collecting dust in your driveway these past few years? G&S Exclusive wants to rekindle the romance with a series of updates that borrow from past and present Maserati sport coupes, to create the new 4200 Evo. Using the Maserati Coupe, built from 2001-2007, as its base, G&S has modified the front fascia and fitted the larger grille from the current GranTurismo. At the rear, you’ll notice the “boomerang” taillights from the 3200 GT have been fitted. Brand aficionados usually prefer this style, used from 1998-2001, rather the blockier units that replaced them. We think it’s a clever retro-themed update, though we’re less convinced when it comes to the Evo’s massive rear diffuser. Maybe it’ll grow on us? Or maybe the blindingly orange paintjob is to blame here? Mechanical changes are limited to a KW Variant 3 sports suspension system and OZ Ultraleggera light-alloy wheels (235/30ZR20 front, 275/25ZR20 rear) fitted with a set of gummy Dunlop tires.

Let’s Dance! GM and PSA Group Partner Up

Let’s Dance! GM and PSA Group Partner Up:

psa_gm_logos4

Today’s announcement between General Motors and the PSA Group (maker of Peugeot and Citroen cars) is perhaps more significant in what it doesn’t say beyond the agreement to link-up to share platforms along with GM taking a 7-percent stake in the French group. Some observers have pointed out that it doesn’t do much initially to lessen overcapacity in Europe, where both PSA and GM’s German Opel unit are struggling. There are cost savings in platform sharing however, which should help some of the underlying problems. But in the larger picture, the alignment may mean that there is a gentleman’s agreement to keep North American hands off to the French. If the economy tanks further in Europe and the Euro is drastically devalued making exports to the U.S. attractive to the Peugeot and Citroen brands, it behooves GM to limit its competition in its home market. This agreement may be one way of doing that.

First Drive: 2012 Renault Fluence

First Drive: 2012 Renault Fluence:

Renault Fluence

is one model in Carlos Ghosn’s electric vehicle (EV) gamble for Renault that will see a four-car range here in the UK, that will be joined by a van later on.

It’s a conservatively styled five-seater saloon, 5 in. longer than its gasoline-engined sibling, thanks to the extra space required for the lithium-ion 22-kWh battery pack located behind the rear seats. Replacing the conventional engine and gearbox is an electric motor producing 95 hp and 166 lb.-ft. of torque electric motor.

Renault Fluence

With no fast charge facility available it takes eight hours to replenish the batteries and gives the driver a 115-mile range.

Inside, the only real clue to all this wizardry is a new fascia with a range meter to the left, a conventional speedo and a third dial displaying how much power you’re tapping into.

Renault Fluence

Like all EVs it steps off the mark briskly thanks to the instant torque, although that starts to wither away at 40 mph. If you drive in Eco mode then you’re in danger of being overtaken by the local snail population, but it would suffice for busy city commuting.

Press on a bit and the power consumption needle stays resolutely in the red while the available range starts to diminish quite rapidly. After just 20 miles the gauge was showing that one-third of the battery power had been used although, to be fair, it wasn’t fully charged when I set off.

Renault Fluence

The ride is comfy and the body control good, but the steering lacks any feeling or feedback while the regenerating brakes are, perhaps, too eager to slow the car down.

Renault is not expecting to set the UK’s roads alight with this car and I can only really see it being of interest to those who live and commute in heavily congested cities or want a taxi-like vehicle.

Lumma Design Tunes Porsche 911 Carrera S – 2012 Geneva Auto Show

Lumma Design Tunes Porsche 911 Carrera S – 2012 Geneva Auto Show:

Lumma Design Tunes Porsche 911 Carrera S – 2012 Geneva Auto Show German tuning firm of Lumma Design has turned its attention to the latest Porsche 911 Carrera S, just in time for the upcoming 2012 Geneva Auto Show. Called the CLR 9 S, the redesign consists of a modified front fascia with new headlight surrounds, along with a small lip spoiler. At the rear is a tasteful three-piece spoiler, which blends nicely with the lines of this seventh-generation 911. A four-pipe sports muffler, featuring “pipe in pipe” design is available, as are Lumma’s 20-in. silver and black lightweight alloy wheels. Inside, the cabin has been trimmed in red leather and black Alcantara. A set of white-faced gauges and aluminum pedals and doorsills add that little something extra, in case you find the standard cabin too dour.
