500 HP Audi A1 Clubsport Quattro Concept Unveiled

Source : Google Reader500 HP Audi A1 Clubsport Quattro Concept Unveiled: "

W110001_large__mid

How does 496 bhp in a small Audi sound? If you happen to be in Austria in the next few days you can hear just what this exciting concept car from Audi sounds like – live and in person at the 30th annual Wörtherseetour for fans of VW and Audi cars. Incidentally, I went there way back in 1985 and if you’re into Volkswagen and Audi cars I can highly recommend attending this giant “must-see” gathering.

The Audi A1 clubsport quattro is powered by a modified version of the 2.5-liter TFSI turbocharged direct injection five-cylinder engine from the Audi TT RS. It produces 496 bhp and 487 ft. of torque — that’s more torque than you’ll find in the Audi R8. Audi claims the car’s 0-62 mph time is 3.7 seconds. It has a six-speed manual transmission coupled to the car’s quattro AWD system. The car has 255/30 tires on 19-inch wheels. Up front, six-piston calipers with carbon fiber rotors help stop the car.

The bodywork has been modified to resemble that of a DTM race car including a side exhaust just ahead of the rear wheels. Air outlets are integrated into the rear of the front wings like those found on the original ur-quattro rally car. The car is designed purely as a race car with no rear seats. Instead you’ll find a large crossbar to stiffen the body and provide a place for a couple of helmets.

As a reminder, the stock A1 is the smallest car in Audi’s lineup and has been well received since it went on sale last year in Europe. It’s based on the VW Polo platform and is almost identical in size to the Ford Fiesta and Mazda2. Although there are no plans to sell the Audi A1 in the U.S. at present things could change if small cars like the Ford Fiesta and Chevrolet Cruze continue their gain in popularity.

Jaguar Land Rover Profits Boost

Jaguar Land Rover Profits Boost: "

land-rover-jagaur_logo

Two of Ford’s problem children, Jaguar and Land Rover, have turned in healthy profits of $1.7 billion on sales of $16.2 billion. This is some turn round for the brands that were bleeding Ford dry before Tata bought them for $2.3 billion three years ago. Much of that success can be laid down to a better product mix and strong sales growth in China, ironically on investments made by Ford.

The big challenge now is for Tata to maintain that progress, but with a commitment to invest $8.2 billion in the next five years on improving quality to match Germany’s big three and expanded product line ups, plus the intention of building new engine plants in both the UK and India, then the signs look good for both Land Rover and Jaguar.

Moreover, it starts to prove the naysayers wrong who forecasted that Tata had bitten off more than it could chew.

Tata Nano Price Triples in First Export Market

Tata Nano Price Triples in First Export Market: "

Tata-Nano-1-big-280511

Tata Motors has begun exporting the Nano city-car to Sri Lanka, the tiny four-door’s first export market. However, the price of the Nano has ballooned to more than $8,000, due to a variety of Sri Lankan taxes and import duties levied on new vehicles. The Nano went on sale in India two years ago, where it was touted as the world’s cheapest car thanks to a starting price of approximately $2,200. Today, the base price of a Nano still hovers around $3,000.

Plans to export the Nano have always been part of the Indian automaker’s sales strategy. Tata Motors Chairman and CEO, Ratan Tata, originally envisioned the Nano as a way to provide Indian families with the comfort and safety offered by a car, at the price point of a two-wheeler. Europe, Southeast Asia, Africa and even the United States have been mentioned as potential markets for the Spartan four-door.

Company officials recently confirmed several hundred Nanos had been shipped out of India. Yet in a bizarre twist, the final destination was initially kept a mystery. Tata Motor’s sales agent in Colombo, the Sri Lankan capital, confirms orders are now being taken for the first 500 cars, according to a report published by the AFP.

“Tata Motors has already established a firm footprint in international markets…The Tata Nano will play a major role in the next phase of growth of our international business,” said Tata Motors Managing Director and Group CEO Carl-Peter Forster.

Renault Has Sunny Outlook for Solar Power

Renault Has Sunny Outlook for Solar Power: "

Renault is launching the largest solar energy project in the automotive industry by installing solar roof panels at its French plants. In partnership with Gestamp Solar, the panels will cover an area the equivalent to 63 football fields. When complete, the French automaker says the energy provided will be equivalent to the annual energy usage by a town with a population of 15,000.

The project involves six factories in France, where solar panels will cover delivery and shipping centers and staff parking lots. Installation begins later this month, with completion scheduled for February 2012. As part of Renault’s “Drive the Change” energy-saving initiative, the company states that the solar panel project will help reduce CO2 emissions by 30,000 tons annually. Renault plans on reducing its carbon footprint by 10 percent by 2013, and a further 10 percent between 2013 and 2016.

Quick Take: 2011 Aston Martin Rapide

Quick Take: 2011 Aston Martin Rapide: "

2010-aston-martin-rapide

The Bond car for the carpool lane.

The bellow of 12-cylinders ricocheted off the walls of the dimly lit tunnel as the Aston Martin Rapide rocketed forward with incredible speed. Only a few hundred yards in length, the Battery Park Underpass connects nothing more exotic than the battle-scarred FDR Drive and West Side Highway in lower Manhattan. But this short stretch of tunnel became my new best friend during a weekend with the Aston sedan.

Genteel when you want it to be, the Rapide can be a pussycat when you don’t need every ounce of performance from its 470-bhp 5.9-liter V-12 engine and 6-speed automatic gearbox. On the highway, the Rapide devours miles with all the comfort and cool refinement you’d expect from a car costing more than $200,000. Of course, it also has a voracious appetite for fuel, as proven by its official 13-mpg city/19-mpg highway averages. In New York traffic, I routinely saw single digit economy readings.

There are also some sacrifices to be made when it comes to passenger comfort. Cars like the Porsche Panamera and Bentley Flying Spur have roomier rear seats and vastly superior ingress/egress. The Rapide, meanwhile, has “swan-wing” doors that open out and slightly upwards. They sound fancy and look cool, but I saw stars on one occasion as I clobbered my head while hopping out of the Aston. And forget rear visibility, the Rapide has none. This is the only car I’ve driven in which every single valet, without exception, asked me to park myself.

Thankfully, the Rapide is highly maneuverable and the steering has quick reflexes. That’s really what this car is all about. The Rapide has the look and feel of a sports car that just happens to have an extra pair of doors. To its credit, trunk space is actually pretty good (especially if you lower the rear seats). And with the windows rolled down, the Bang & Olufsen 15-speaker sound system rocked Times Square during one late-night cruise.

Yet nothing rivaled the sound of that English-built V-12, as it cleared its throat for one more subterranean blast around the tip of Manhattan.

Chevrolet Malibu Top Selling Car in May

Chevrolet Malibu Top Selling Car in May: "

2013-chevrolet-malibu-009_gallery_image_large

As expected, the March earthquake in Japan has knocked the status quo out of whack in the new car market. Generally speaking there tends to be very little change in sales ranking among the leading cars on a month to month, and even year to year, basis.

You could pretty much predict that the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord would be top sellers, closely followed by the Toyota Corolla, Honda Civic and Nissan Altima. Indeed, so far this year that’s been the case with the only change being the Ford Fusion, which has just barely outsold the Honda Civic to take fifth position in the sales race.

Sales in the month of May changed the rankings substantially, at least for the one month.

1. Chevrolet Malibu25,600
2. Nissan Altima25,525
3. Ford Fusion24,666
4. Hyundai Sonata22,754
5. Chevrolet Cruze22,711
6. Ford Focus22,303
7. Hyundai Elantra20,006
8. Toyota Camry18,830
9. Honda Civic18,341
10. Honda Accord18,185

The Chevrolet Malibu, normally the seventh best seller, was the most popular car sold in May, just beating the Nissan Altima. The Camry slid from first to eighth spot while the Honda Accord dropped from second to tenth. I’m not sure how Nissan managed to increase sales of the Altima while its bigger rivals were clearly hurt by the earthquake’s aftermath. All three are manufactured in the U.S. so you would have expected them all to be equally affected.

The Ford Fusion finished third in the sales chart for the month followed by the Hyundai Sonata, Chevrolet Cruze and Ford Focus all bunched together with almost identical sales volumes. The Chevrolet Cruze, in fifth position, easily outsold the Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla during the month as their rankings fell from fourth and third respectively to ninth and eleventh in the standings.

Apart from the Chevrolet Cruze, which is an all new entry in the top ten list, the other newcomer was the Hyundai Elantra which doubled its sales volume in May to take seventh, compared to an 12th position ranking last year.

Overall the new vehicle market in May was down by 4 percent compared to the same month last year. Considering how badly Toyota and Honda were affected it was surprising sales were not worse. Sadly the fact Ford and GM showed a modest decline in sales indicates that perhaps the sales recovery the industry has been enjoying so far this year has slowed.

Volvo Testing Flywheel KERS System

Volvo Testing Flywheel KERS System: "

flywheel-kers_01

Anyone who’s been following Formula One for the past few years will know that KERS (Kinetic Energy Recovery System) is controversial. In GP races it’s used to give drivers, or should I say their car, a boost of energy when they want to pass.

There is nothing really new in the concept as regenerative brake systems are used in hybrid and electric cars. Volvo, however, is one of the first to try out a new variation called Flywheel KERS, which is fitted to the rear axle.

flywheel-kers_02

During retardation, braking energy causes a flywheel to spin at up to 60,000 rpm. When the car starts moving off again, the flywheel’s rotation is transferred to the rear wheels via a specially designed transmission.
The regular gasoline engine driving the front wheels is switched off as soon as the braking begins. The energy in the flywheel can be used to accelerate the vehicle when it is time to move or to power the vehicle once it reaches cruising speed.

Volvo says it tested flywheel propulsion assistance back in the 1980s but heavy flywheels made of steel were a problem. The flywheel that Volvo will use in its test car is made of carbon fiber. It has a diameter of about 8 inches, weighs about three pounds, and spins in a vacuum to minimize frictional losses.

flywheel-kers_03

Volvo is working on this concept with SKF and has received a grant from the Swedish Energy Agency to test the system on the highway. Volvo Powertrain engineers claim it could reduce fuel consumption in a four-cylinder engine by up to 20 percent while giving the engine the acceleration potential of a six-cylinder engine.

Since the flywheel is only activated while braking and has limited storage duration it will obviously work best in busy stop and start conditions. Hey, if it works as expected you might not use any fuel while stuck in traffic. Likewise you might be able to garner better fuel consumption while driving briskly on twisty roads instead of taking a boring straight highway.

A Pair of Painted Flying Lizards Get Ready for Le Mans

A Pair of Painted Flying Lizards Get Ready for Le Mans: "

Flying Lizard Porsche 1

Don’t start applying watercolors to “Iggy,” your beloved pet iguana. The Flying Lizard team is all about Porsche power. The Sonoma-based racing team is ready to unveil a pair of Troy Lee-designed paintjobs ahead of this year’s 24 Hours of Le Mans endurance race. The No. 80 and No. 81 Flying Lizard Porsche 911s have either a candy metallic blue or metallic orange base coat, along with the names and flags of the 28 Porsche drivers who have won the race woven around each car.

“The livery commemorates the heritage of Porsche at Le Mans, starting with drivers Hans Hermann and Richard Attwood, who secured the first overall victory for Porsche in 1970,” said Flying Lizard VP of Marketing, Jennifer Hart. “The 911 is an ideal canvas for Troy Lee’s beautiful tribute to this iconic race.”

Flying Lizard Porsche 2

The two Porsche 911 GT3 RSRs will be officially unveiled during pre-race scrutineering on June 6. This is the first time the highly successful Flying Lizard team has fielded two vehicles at Le Mans. “This design exemplifies the effort that Flying Lizard puts into every aspect of their race preparation, and shows why Lizard drivers have won the American Le Mans Series GT championship for the last three years,” said President of Porsche Motorsport North America Jens Walther

The green flag for the Flying Lizard team, and the rest of the entries for this years 24 Hours of Le Mans, drops at 3:00 p.m. local time (9:00 a.m. EST) on Saturday, June 11.

No School Attendance, No Driver’s License?: "

A news release appeared in my email this morning, posing an interesting question:

Should lawmakers continue to propose laws that link driving privileges to school attendance? If driving is a privilege and not a right, is it unconstitutional to revoke a high school dropout’s driving privileges?

What do you think? A PSCars.com recently polled more than 4000 drivers and found that roughly 68 percent of respondents agreed with creating such a law in their state.

Attainable Alternatives to Aspirational Vehicles

Attainable Alternatives to Aspirational Vehicles: "

Lamborghini Countach-1

Most car nuts have an aspirational car – one they dream of owning if they win the lottery or hit the big time on Wall Street. When I was teenager my aspirational car was a Jaguar E-Type Roadster. I managed to buy a 1966 E-Type for $3,000 in 1976 and drove it for eight years before restoring it at a cost of about $22,000. I then sold it for $28,000, less $3,000 commission, ten years after I’d bought it. According to Hagerty Insurance, the world’s leader in classic car insurance my old E-Type could be worth north of $100,000 today.

Hagerty says the value of classic cars has been rising recently despite the recession. A few days ago it came up with an intriguing list of affordable alternatives to a selection of aspirational cars that have become too expensive for most of us. Take a look at the list and see if you agree with the alternative choices for their Top Five Attainable Dream Cars.

Vehicle values are from the Hagerty Price Guide for cars in #2 condition, which is just below concours, (www.hagertypriceguide.com). Do you agree with their choices, and descriptions, of alternatives?

Aspirational: 1967 Chevrolet Corvette 427/435 L71 Convertible ($155,000)

Attainable: 1973 Chevrolet Corvette 454/275 LS4 Convertible ($38,600)

The ‘67 big-block C2 Corvette is (after the million-dollar L88) the Corvette to own for most fans of America’s sports car. Televised auctions and demand have pushed it well out of reach for most enthusiasts. A lot more of us can write the check for the most overlooked big-block C3 Corvette. The horsepower difference isn’t as big as it looks since the ‘73 is rated in net rather than gross horsepower and the C3’s looks get better and better every year.

Aspirational: 1966 Ford Mustang Shelby GT350 Fastback Coupe ($135,000)

Attainable: 1964 Ford Falcon Futura Sprint Coupe ($21,300)

These two cars have a lot more in common than most people realize. The Mustang is based on the Falcon’s chassis and both cars share brilliant small-block Ford V8 power. And while it may lack the looks of the Mustang fastback and the Shelby connection, the Falcon Sprint is a very special car in its own right and happens to cost about what the sales tax on the Shelby would set you back.

Aspirational: 1970 Plymouth ‘Cuda Hemi Coupe ($211,000)

Attainable: 1970 Dodge Challenger 440/390 Coupe ($73,200)

Stylistically, these two Mopar muscle cars look similar. Both were based on the famous E-body that was the inspiration for the new Dodge Challenger. Hemi is a magic word in muscle car circles and you pay dearly for it. But Chrysler’s conventional 440 Interceptor V8 was no slouch in the power department and you get a very similar car for about one third the price.

Aspirational: 1967 Jaguar E-Type Coupe ($61,700)

Attainable: 1967 Triumph GT6 Fastback Coupe ($9,750)

The E-type is about as iconic as icons get. No less a car guy than Enzo Ferrari wept and called it the most beautiful car he’d ever seen when the car was introduced in Geneva in 1961. The little Triumph GT6 looks like a 2/3 scale model of the E-type right down to the wire wheels, forward-hinged bonnet and smooth straight six. For a fraction of the cost of an E, you can get much of the style and glamour. It helps if you aren’t taller than 5′ 9,” though.

Aspirational: 1976 Lamborghini Countach LP400 Coupe ($134,900)

Attainable: 1980 Lotus Esprit Turbo Coupe ($18,800)

A Countach poster was standard equipment on every dorm room wall circa 1979. They were ungodly expensive new and remain that way today. While not gracing as many dorm room walls, no less than 007 picked an Esprit when he needed a vehicle that doubled as a getaway car and a ballistic missile submarine. While the Lotus turbo four might not have the cachet of the Lambo V12, the acquisition cost is a fraction of the Lambo and it won’t cost the GDP of an island nation to maintain.

IndyCars Will Race on Motegi Road Course

IndyCars Will Race on Motegi Road Course: "

MOTEGI-race-track

The Izod IndyCar Series announced today that it will run the 2.98-mile natural-terrain road course during its final visit to the Twin Ring Motegi motorsports facility in Japan on Sept. 18. The race was originally scheduled for the 1.5-mile, egg-shaped oval, but it sustained damage during the March earthquakes. Raised ridges to the track surface prevent the IZOD IndyCar Series cars from competing on the oval.

“In conjunction with Mobilityland, we have made the decision to move forward with our race in Motegi after closely monitoring the ongoing situation in Japan for several months,” said Randy Bernard, CEO, IndyCar. “After weighing a variety of options, we felt it was best to move the race to the road course. We understand that Japan is steadily moving forward with reconstruction and we look forward to entertaining our strong fan base at Motegi with our inaugural run on the road course.”

“Earlier this year the Izod IndyCar Series announced that the Sept. 18 race will be its final race at the facility. Twin Ring Motegi, which is owned by Mobilityland Corp., opened in 1997 and has played host to open-wheel events since 1998.

Driver Roger Yasukawa, who knows Motegi well, has expressed some concerns.

Says Yasukawa: “Fans in Japan have always respected Indy Cars as being an oval racing series, and not really road course cars. Therefore, if we go there and run slower than the Formula Nippon cars….that would be bad for IndyCar since the enthusiasts will look at Indy as not a top-level series. Maybe the general fans won’t care, but I just hope they change the configuration of the track so the fans have nothing to relate to as far as comparing the times. Considering the weight of the car, I am certain it will be slower than Formula Nippon and probably a bit quicker than GT 500 cars.

“The other concern is the usage of the front straight. I hope they modify the track so it can use the front straight and pit lane that are used for the oval. Otherwise there is 150 ft of distance from the grandstand to the road course’s front straight, and it won’t be enjoyable for the fans.

“And last, my biggest concern is radiation. Not many people realize that Motegi is only about 100 miles from the Fukushima reactor. Although I am glad that the league is supportive of this event, I would hope and think that there is no issue in regard to that, and trust that the organizer is taking appropriate measures and actions to ensure safety of drivers, team crews, and the fans.

“Overall, I’d rather see the cars go around on ovals. I’m sure it was a tough decision for Motegi, since they have already announced this was going to be the last year, Nevertheless, I hope they end the race on a high note.”

Le Mans Ready: Inside the Nissan Leaf Nismo RC

Le Mans Ready: Inside the Nissan Leaf Nismo RC: "

P1020621

Nissan just announced that they are going to run the Leaf Nismo RC for the first time publicly at the upcoming 24 Hours of Le Mans for demo laps on Thursday, June 9 at 9:15 pm and on Saturday, June 11 at 12:10 pm.

First shown at the New York Auto Show, the Leaf Nismo RC is Nissan’s vision of what an electric race car might be. And boasting a carbon fiber monocoque chassis and body panels, Volk wheels, AP brakes and Bride seats, the future looks surprisingly rosy, albeit with a heavy tinge of green.

While the engine retains the stock electric engine out of the Leaf, thanks to the extensive modifications, the Nismo Leaf RC weighs in at 2068 lb. For comparison, the standard Leaf SV tips the scales at 3366 lb. and the Leaf SL at 3375 lb., a difference of about 1300 lb. Nissan is currently in talks with American organizers in hopes of starting a one-make or electric race series with the lightweight Leaf. As long as it doesn’t affect the future of Nissan’s fuel-consuming motorsports, we say go for it.

Ahead of its scheduled French debut, the car is currently on display at the Silverstone Circuit in the U.K. for the GT Academy, a Sony and Nissan sponsored U.S. driver’s search where gamers are afforded the opportunity to race in real cars. With us at Silverstone covering the GT Academy, we used the opportunity to crack open the doors for an exclusive look inside the Nissan Leaf Nismo RC.

Men vs. Women Drivers

Men vs. Women Drivers: "

The UK’s Institute of Advanced Motorists has opened up that old can of worms about who make the safest drivers: men or women.

According to its latest research report, “Licensed to skill: Contributory factors in road accidents”, men are more likely than women to be involved in crashes because of bad driving habits such as driving too fast and drunk-driving.

When comparing men and women, men are nearly twice as likely to be involved in a collision due to being careless, reckless or in a hurry. They are also more likely to crash because of poor behavior or inexperience.

The main differences highlighted in the report are:

  • Careless, reckless or in a hurry is recorded more frequently for men (10%) than women (6%)

  • Travelling too fast for the conditions is recorded more frequently for men (7%) than women (4%)

  • Poor driving behavior or inexperience is recorded more frequently for men (14%) than women (10%)

However, by the same token, recent research by the IAM shows that women and men aren’t so different when it comes to driving behavior and attitudes. Most men and women enjoy driving, and rate themselves to be confident, considerate and safe.

But almost twice as many men as women claim to be “very confident” drivers.

IAM chief executive Simon Best said: “These results show that we need to look at the psychology of male drivers to reduce risky behavior and over-confidence, but for both sexes accidents could be easily reduced by improving driver skills and lives could be saved.”

2011 Vauxhall VXR8

2011 Vauxhall VXR8: "

VXR8.3

Some two decades ago when the Lotus Carlton was under development, then GM Europe boss, Bob Eaton, told me that its two European brands of Vauxhall and Opel were ‘blue collar’ marques: worthy, working class products that didn’t really catch the imagination but provided generations with honest products.

The Lotus Carlton/Omega was created to change that image and add a bit of fairy dust, but as its launch coincided with an economical downturn and it never really succeeded.

With its VXR range, Vauxhall has tried with varying degrees of success to add that extra pizzazz to the marque – its latest attempt here in the UK is this, the VXR8.

VXR8 engine.2

If it looks familiar, it should as it’s a rebadged version of the Australian developed and built Holden Special Vehicles E3 GTS and, yep, that engine is the Camaro’s LS3 V-8 with 425 bhp and 405 lb.-ft. of torque on the other end of the throttle. That’s sufficient to thump the four-door to 60 mph in 4.9 seconds, with a restricted V-max of 155 mph.

It also comes with the same MagnaRide suspension used on the ZR1 ‘Vette as well as launch control for those quick getaways.

VXR8.2

A few laps of a high speed testing bowl was enough to convince me that the old soubriquet of ‘there ain’t no substitute for cubic inches’ still rings true, with plenty of mid range torque available from an engine that sounds intoxicating as the tacho’s red line approaches.

At the equivalent of $81,000 it’s not going to be everyone’s cup of tea but it will be interesting to see if it can attract sales from the hot Mitsubishi’s and Subaru’s of this world, but I fear that Vauxhall, or Opel, will need more than this to shed their still somewhat underserved dowdy image.

2011 Volkswagen Amarok

2011 Volkswagen Amarok: "

Amarok.2

Unlike in the U.S. where pick-ups are as popular as apple pie, here in the UK they aren’t considered to be the same lifestyle choice – probably because there’s still not a majority of two, or three car families where the Ute can be part of the families transport solution.

Here, manufacturers tend to describe them as ‘artisanal’ products, the same with vans, they have double cabs and, increasingly car-like trim and fittings such as air-con and other added niceties like electric windows. That means during the working week Dad can use his van or pick-up for work and at weekends, or evenings, it doubles as the family transport.

Typical of this genre is VW’s Amarok which has just gone on sale and it’s proved an immediate success with the less than 1000 to be imported in the initial tranche already snapped up.

I recently spent some time behind the wheel of a two-lite, 161 bhp diesel version developing 295 lb.-ft. of torque from 1500 to 2000 rpm.

It comes well equipped with CD player, air-con, cruise control and other ‘luxuries’ such as privacy glass and heated seats which move it out of the utilitarian market into a more sophisticated product. Add to that, four-wheel drive, including low range, and the result is a product that could knock on the door of such workhorses as the Land Rover Defender, but roomier and more sophisticated.

An Amarok wouldn’t find its way into my garage on a permanent basis, but I begin to understand their appeal – even the local bovines seemed quite impressed.
