The B-Specs Keep Coming! Mini Joins the Fray with Turnkey Cooper Hardtop Race Car
Mini has announced that it, too, will get in on the new B-Spec racing action with a race-prepped Mini Cooper Hardtop. Mini USA has partnered with Mini of Charleston, South Carolina, to offer B-Spec–compliant turnkey Cooper race cars. Like most of the other participating automakers, Mini will also sell Spec-ready conversion kits for those who already own a 2007-2012 Mini Cooper and have the racing itch.
Who knew small, cheap race cars with their own competitive racing class would catch on? The 2012 SCCA, Grand Am, NASA, and World Challenge seasons haven’t begun yet and already the B-Spec field is crowded. The Mini B-Spec racer, per B-Spec regulations, is mostly stock—its engine produces the same 121 hp and 114 lb-ft of torque as a normal Cooper. It gets required safety equipment like a roll cage, racing seat and harness, and a window net. The Mini rides on KW V1 coil-overs and the brakes get heavier-duty pads and braided lines. Finally, the Cooper rolls on a set of itty-bitty 15-inch alloy wheels and Hoosier racing slicks. Like Mazda, Mini backs amateur race drivers with its Motorsport Awards Program, which awards cash prizes for racing successes.
Mini USA will announce pricing for both the racing kits and the fully prepped, turnkey Coopers closer to the start of the 2012 racing season. In the meantime, the company will show off a B-Spec prototype at this week’s L.A. auto show. We don’t know about you, but the Car and Driver office is geeking out over a racing series for inexpensive, buzzy little hatchbacks.
2012 Cadillac XTS Official Photos and Info: A Bunch of Gadgets—Plus a Car
Cadillac launches a bunch of in-car gadgets. Oh, and a new flagship.
Cadillac’s front-wheel-drive, V-8–powered chariot of South Florida, the DTS, was put out to pasture this year. Its platform was introduced when its current octogenarian owners were mere quinquagenarians; in plain English, this means that the DTS underpinnings could be traced back some 30 years. Rather than replace it with a BMW-chasing, rear-drive four-door of the sort that enthusiasts demand and shoppers would probably overlook, it will instead be succeeded at the top of the Cadillac sedan range with the XTS, a sensible car built on the company’s Premium Epsilon platform. (A rear-driver has been rumored, however.) Is the XTS a grandpamobile? Sure—so long as your grandfather is a computer geek.

160-hp 2012 Fiat 500 Abarth Debuts at L.A. Auto Show
Fiat’s little guy is going guano crazy.
Just one year ago at the Los Angeles auto show, Fiat announced its official reentry into our country with the debut of the U.S.-spec 500. Since then, the brand has added the pseudo convertible 500C, but sales of all Cinquecentos have failed to impress. You might say they could use a little boost, so what better time to introduce a hotter turbocharged variant to our shores? Conveniently, Fiat is pulling the wraps off the U.S.-spec 500 Abarth at this week’s Los Angeles auto show. It will go on sale in March.

It Only Took 12 Years: 2013 Ford Escape Debuts at L.A. Auto Show
Finally, a new Escape. It doesn’t look boring anymore, but neither is it as exciting as we’d hoped.
Remember this day, because this is when we at Car and Driver admit that we were anticipating a small crossover. Ever since we saw the Vertrek concept, which Ford showed in Detroit last year to preview the new Escape, we’ve genuinely been looking forward to the production vehicle. Why else would we have posted three separate sets of spy photos? The Vertrek was a stunner, and it looked awfully showroom-ready. At the 2011 Los Angeles auto show, we finally get to see just how close it was to reality—and we’re a little bummed that it wasn’t closer.

2012 Jaguar XKR-S Convertible Debuts: Just 25 Will Come to the U.S.
Jaguar makes its super coupe available as a super convertible, albeit in very small quantities.
With its 550-hp supercharged V-8, snarling exhaust note, and no-ordinary-housecat body mods, the 2012 Jaguar XKR-S coupe is a serious performance machine. But for every coupe fan, there is another person—often the coupe fan’s spouse—that would prefer a droptop. Allow us to present the 2012 Jaguar XKR-S convertible.

2012 Chevrolet Corvette Daytona Prototype Race Car Announced
The Daytona Prototype class already hosts the quickest, hottest cars in the Grand-Am series, and Chevrolet’s new 2012 Corvette Daytona Prototype looks to amp things up even more when it takes to the track at the Rolex 24 at Daytona in January. For those unfamiliar, the Daytona Prototype class is comprised of purpose-built, mid-engine racers that are far less related to street cars than, say, the ZR1-based Corvette C6.R, which races in ALMS.
Chevrolet’s DP entry wasn’t an entirely home-grown effort, and the Corvette Prototype was developed with help from chassis specialists Riley, Coyote, and Dallara along with Pratt & Miller, Corvette Designers, and Grand-Am itself. Other than a few Corvette styling cues—including a split rear window!—littered about the carbon-fiber bodywork, the prototype car shares nothing with a roadgoing Corvette. (To the Corvette speculators, the DP car may have that throwback rear window and a mid-engine configuration, but that does not mean the C7 Corvette will, too.) Among the vast array of specifics left out of the release were engine layout and size; a 500-horse, 5.0-liter Chevrolet V-8 was campaigned last year, however, so we have a sneaking suspicion that’s what lives under the Lexan window out back.
Four teams have been announced as running the new Corvette: Spirit of Daytona Racing, SunTrust Racing, GAINSCO/Bob Stallings Racing, and Action Express Racing. Given the Corvette nameplate’s long and storied history in road racing—and its huge pile of trophies—we’re excited to see how the car does next year.
Toyota Reveals Production Prius C; Will Bring It, FT-86, and Three Concepts to Tokyo Auto Show
Tokyo is as close as Toyota gets to having an auto show on its home turf. And like the Detroit Three do at the Motor City’s annual blowout, the Japanese company is set to debut a large batch of concept and production cars at this year’s Tokyo show. The production-ready versions of the rear-drive FT-86 sports car and the Prius C (called Aqua in Japan) will be on hand, as will three green concept cars with names made up of alphabet-soup acronyms: Fun-Vii (Fun Vehicle interactive internet), FCV-R (Fuel Cell Vehicle – Reality & Revolution), and FT-EV III (Future Toyota – Electric Vehicle III).
2012 Prius C
Thanks to a leaked Japanese-market brochure, we already know most of the upcoming Prius C’s specifics, but Toyota released a few official photos along with some new information on the eve of the car’s Tokyo debut. The company claims that the C will return more than 50 mpg in city driving, greater than any non-plug-in hybrid. The larger Prius is rated at 51 mpg in city driving, so we assume the C will beat that figure. Bluetooth connectivity, steering-wheel-mounted audio controls, and nine airbags will be standard on the U.S. model; Toyota’s new Entune infotainment system will be optional. The C is set to go on sale in Japan in late December 2011 before hitting other markets. Interestingly, those other markets won’t include Europe—we imagine the Continent’s cool attitude towards hybrids played a factor in Toyota’s decision.
2012 FT-86
Toyota didn’t give away any new information or release any photos of the upcoming FT-86 sports car (the FT-86 II concept is pictured above) that will be revealed in Tokyo. The FT-86 was co-developed by Toyota and Subaru, and Subie’s version, the BRZ, also will debut at the Tokyo show. We already know most of the FT-86’s mechanical details and we’ve seen what it will look like via a leaked brochure, but we expect to finally get the official run-down after its Tokyo premiere.
Fun-Vii Concept
To be honest, we’re not completely sure what the Fun-Vii concept is all about, or even what the acronym in its name means. According to Toyota, the “Fun Vehicle interactive internet” is the company’s “vision of a future where people, cars, and society are linked.” Sure. And no, we don’t know what is going on in the photo above. Guess we’ll have to wait until its reveal to see what this one’s all about.
FT-EV III Concept
As the FT-EV III’s name—“Future Toyota – Electric Vehicle III”—suggests, it is the third in a line of electric concept vehicles Toyota has developed to showcase a future short-range production EV. If you’re thinking it looks a lot like a Toyota/Scion iQ, that’s because it is an iQ, but electric. The original FT-EV was unabashedly an electric iQ, while the FT-EV II that followed a few months later was much more unique and was less iQ-like. (It wore bespoke styling and was significantly smaller than the iQ). Toyota says the FT-EV III’s lithium-ion battery is good for a 65-mile range on the optimistic Japanese JC08 testing cycle and that its EV technology will migrate to a production vehicle due sometime in 2012. We know that Scion will sell an electric iQ to fleets in 2012, so this could be a preview of that car.
FCV-R Concept
Like Honda, which has delivered a few copies of its FCX Clarity to real customers, Toyota is serious about fuel-cell vehicles. More than just a Prius with a Fu Manchu mustache, the FCV-R concept is another step toward the goal of putting such a car on the road by 2015. The fuel-cell stack, with a high-pressure hydrogen tank, has been improved to provide a cruising distance of about 435 miles.
Chevrolet Announces $54,995 Price Tag For 580-hp Camaro ZL1
If you ever need an example of poor timing, General Motors just provided a gem. The same day the company announces a $54,995 price for the Camaro ZL1, Ford nukes the collective minds of the automotive world with the news that ZL1′s direct competitor, the Mustang GT500, will have 650 horsepower for 2013. The ZL1 has 580.
But hey, cars are about more than just horsepower, right? Handling, braking, steering, and ride are all other crucial aspects of the driving experience, and physical appearance matters quite a bit, too. And nobody knows yet exactly how much of a premium Ford will hang on the GT500. (It’s unlikely that the Shelby will cost much more than the ZL1, though.) To better comprehend the ZL1′s standing among 6.2-liter screamers and the Shelby, check out our handy table below.
For 55 large (not counting the probable gas-guzzler tax of $1000 or so), the ZL1 comes well equipped. Leather seats with faux-suede inserts are standard, as are a rear-view camera and a premium audio system. The car comes with General Motors’ latest iteration of Magnetic Ride Control, as well as launch control and coolers for the differential and engine and transmission oil. In terms of options, there are few: A six-speed automatic transmission is an extra $1185, a sunroof commands $900, and a few cosmetic tweaks round out list.
This makes the ZL1 about $10,000 less than the cheapest Cadillac CTS-V, which is powered by a version of the same engine. (The Caddy’s has a mere 556 hp.) And with 580 hp on tap, the ZL1 is sure to offer a ton of performance—although saying how much exactly will have to wait until we get hold of one. It’s just a pity the ZL1 wasn’t quick enough to outrun Ford’s news.

2013 Mercedes-Benz SL-class To Be Lighter—and Packed with Technology, Of Course
SL ostensibly stands for Sport Leicht—“Sport Light”—but Mercedes’ top-dog roadster hasn’t lived up to the billing for decades, instead morphing into a heavy boulevard cruiser. The outgoing SL is certainly quick, but it’s far from nimble. Small wonder: The SL550 tipped our scales at 4233 pounds. At a recent tech day, Mercedes told us what it’s doing to change that, along with a few other things to expect on the 2013 SL-class.
Mercedes says the new SL will weigh 275 pounds less than the old car, which has been offered since the fall of 2001. Almost 250 pounds of that savings comes via the aluminum-intensive body (a development which this author reported way back in October 2010). The current-gen SL only has an aluminum hood and doors, with the rest of the car constructed from steel; in contrast, only the new car’s windshield and roof frames are made from steel, and the rear bulkhead is partially constructed from even lighter magnesium. The rest is aluminum, save for the trunklid. That piece is made from plastic composite and allows Mercedes to integrate all antennae for the radio, navigation, and phone systems into the panel itself without the wart so common on today’s vehicles.
The new SL is not just lighter. Its structure is stronger, thanks to various advanced bonding techniques and “bionic” elements inspired by structures found in nature. Torsional rigidity has improved by more than 20 percent, according to Mercedes.
Luxury-oriented items include doors that hold any open position and a new wiper system that goes by the somewhat ridiculous name of Magic Vision Control. The system takes into account temperature, velocity, and even the season to calculate the optimal amount of washer fluid to be sprayed onto the windshield. When you operate the system with an open top, the fluid—spurted from several arm-mounted jets—is sprayed mainly when the wiper is moving downwards, so you won’t receive an unwanted shower. The washer fluid is heated, but the wiper blade also can be heated as an extra-cost option.
Mercedes also has worked to vastly improve the performance of the audio system, especially in top-down mode. The bass speakers are now integrated on the underside of the dash, in the footwells, instead of their typical position in the doors or under the seats. We’ll have to listen to it for ourselves, but the company says the experience is hugely superior when the roof is open. This so-called “Front Bass” system is standard, and the auditory experience can be further enhanced by specifying either a 600-watt Harman/Kardon Logic7 surround-sound system or the top-spec 940-watt Bang & Olufsen system.
Further details were scarce at the event, but we expect to have more information on the 2013 SL-class soon. Stay tuned.
2013 Infiniti JX35 Revealed in Production Trim, Will Start at $41,400
The family friendly Infiniti crossover is here.
Do not adjust your eyeballs. You have already seen this vehicle. Infiniti unveiled a JX concept in Pebble Beach in August, and as we wrote then, this L.A. production version is pretty much the same—right down to the color. Infiniti has now, however, confirmed a few of our hunches and added a heaping helping of additional details, including pricing.

2013 Infiniti IPL G Convertible Shown in Production Trim at L.A. Show
Infiniti’s Performance Line officially becomes a “line” with this souped-up G for sun lovers.
The Infiniti Performance Line was launched late last year with but a single model, a sharpened and slightly more powerful version of the G37 coupe called the IPL G coupe. In August, Infiniti showed us what an IPL G convertible would look like and announced—to no one’s surprise—that the convertible also would make it to dealers. Now Infiniti has debuted the production IPL G for extroverts at the 2011 Los Angeles auto show.

Volvo Shows Four Possible Design Directions for Next-Gen XC90
While Volvo’s stand at the 2011 Los Angeles auto show didn’t house anything we haven’t seen before (save a sassy version of the doomed C70 convertible), we did see some interesting stuff at the company’s slick Camarillo, California, design studio just prior to the show. There we got a peek at these four sketches, which show possible design directions for next-generation XC90 crossover. On first glance, they all look roughly the same, but closer inspection reveals variations in everything from the size and shape of the signature taillamps to the C-pillar treatment to the varying degrees of angularity in the overall shapes. All, however, look far more modern than today’s XC90, which has been on the market since 2002.
Volvo didn’t so much as hint about which of the four is most likely to get the green light, but it did say that the XC90 will be the first vehicle built on Volvo’s upcoming Scalable Platform Architecture. Also, in accordance with its previously announced future powertrain strategy, the next XC90 will feature only four-cylinder engines. Given the XC90’s size, you can expect direct injection and copious amounts of turbocharging, and possibly even some version of the kinetic energy recovery system that the firm is currently testing. Volvo wouldn’t comment on a hybrid version, but since the SPA platform is designed to handle all extents of electrification, you can bet your last Swedish fish there will be one. We were told that the next-gen XC90 will bow sometime in 2014.
2013 Mazda CX-5 Specs Released: 155 HP, Up to 33 MPG Highway, No Manual/AWD Combo
On the eve of the 2013 CX-5’s American debut at the L.A. auto show, Mazda has released the crossover’s U.S.-market specifications. We’ve already driven the CX-5, but still didn’t know final output, weight, or fuel-economy figures. The quick rundown: According to Mazda’s spec sheet, the CX-5 will pack 155 hp, weigh less than 3500 pounds, and return up to 33 mpg on the highway.
The CX-5 is the first Mazda to be wholly designed with the automaker’s efficiency-boosting Skyactiv technologies baked in. At its core, Skyactiv tech is intended to boost fuel economy and reduce weight. The CX-5’s direct-injected, 2.0-liter four-cylinder Skyactiv-G engine is the same one as found under the hood of the 2012 Mazda 3 Skyactiv. It produces an identical 155 hp as in the 3, but grunts out 2 more lb-ft of twist to total 150 lb-ft of torque.
Unlike the Mazda 3, the CX-5’s chassis and body structures were engineered following the Skyactiv ethos from the get-go, and they are relatively light. How light? According to Mazda, a front-drive CX-5 with a six-speed manual will weigh 3208 pounds and an all-wheel-drive model with a six-speed auto tops out at 3426. (For reference, Ford’s estimates for its new 2013 Escape range from 3515 to 3769 pounds.) Its lower curb weight not only helps imbue the CX-5 with nimble handling, but also aids fuel economy. Mazda expects the front-drive, manual model to return 26 mpg in the city and 33 on the highway, the automatic front-driver to get 26/32, and the automatic all-wheel-drive model 25/30. For those yearning for an all-wheel-drive CX-5 equipped with the six-speed manual, you’re out of luck—a Mazda rep informed us that there are no plans to sell such a combination in the U.S. at launch. She did allow for at least the slim possibility in the future.
Pricing for the 2013 Mazda CX-5 has yet to be announced, but it’s intended to slot below the CX-7 in Mazda’s lineup. That model starts at $22,785, so the CX-5 should start around $20K. The CX-5 will be available in Sport, Touring, and Grand Touring models when it goes on sale early next year. Based on our early driving experience, whichever model buyers get, they’ll wind up behind the wheel of the finest driving compact ute in its segment.
