Euro Crises Hits Supercar Owners

Euro Crises Hits Supercar Owners:

Euro Crises Hits Supercar Owners

According to reports in the Italian media owners of Lamborghinis, Ferraris and high powered SUVs are being targeted by the Guardia di Finanza, or financial police, for potential tax evasion.

Following a raid over Christmas at the chic Cortina d’Amprezzo ski report tax inspectors traced no less than 133 owners of Lambos, Ferraris and other high end cars and found that almost one-third had declared incomes under €22,000 (just over $29,000) while another 16 claimed to earn less than €50,000 ($66,600) a year.

These spot checks are now being carried out across Italy: a Florentine builder driving a brand new Merc was found not to have filed any tax returns and his wife was on welfare.

As a result high end cars are being sold in droves, many being snapped up by opportunistic entrepreneurs in Poland, the Ukraine, Moldova and the Czech Republic. Last year some 60 Porsches were exported from Italy each week – that figure has more than tripled to 200.

Italy’s new prime minister, ‘Super’ Mario Monti is clamping down on tax evasion in an effort to reduce Italy’s crippling financial state, and when tax evasion amounts to nearly $367 billion or 17.5% of GDP then everyone with a chic lifestyle and a luxury car is likely to be investigated.

Koenigsegg Agera R Sets Guinness Record

Koenigsegg Agera R Sets Guinness Record:

Koenigsegg Agera R Sets Guinness Record

A year ago Koenigsegg, the Swedish maker of hyper exotic supercars, unveiled the Agera R at the 2011 Geneva Auto Show. It was a modified version of the base Agera that upped the engine’s output from 910 bhp to 1,115 bhp and added $214,000, bringing the total cost to around $1 million. At the time, the company claimed the Agera R would be faster than a Bugatti Veyron.

It set out to prove this last September when a standard Koenigsegg Agera R, driven by Robert Serwanski, took several new production car world records at the Koenigsegg proving ground in Ängelholm, Sweden. According to Koenigsegg, all data was measured and collected by a third party with the officially accepted Racelogic VBox performance recorder.

The performance numbers recorded were:

  • 0-300 km/h = 14.53 sec

  • 0-200 mph = 17.68 sec

  • 300-0 km/h = 6.66 sec

  • 200-0 mph = 7.28 sec

  • 0-300-0 km/h = 21.19 sec

  • 0-200-0 mph = 24.96 sec

A few months later, after submission to the Guinness Book of World Records, it was granted the title for ‘The fastest time for a two-seater production car to travel from 0-300-0 km/h’, which it achieved in just 21.19 seconds.

Press_guinness-world-records-certificate-260x400

Part of the secret to the Agera R’s high performance is the utilization of Umeco’s lightweight carbon fiber prepregs for the structure and bodywork. In case you’re wondering, a prepreg “consists of a reinforcement material pre-impregnated with a polymer or resin matrix in a controlled ratio”.

And if you’ve not heard of Umeco, it is a British company that supplies carbon-fiber components to companies around the world. If you fly on the double-decker Airbus A 380 or the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, they both use Umeco composites. Rolls-Royce, the jet-engine maker not the motor car company, is Umeco’s biggest customer. Umeco was originally founded in 1917 as the University Motor and Engineering Company, when it distributed cars in southern England.

Next week Koenigsegg will unveil the 2013 Agera R in Geneva, but there is no word on the company website as to what we can expect. Presumably it will be even faster and more expensive!

Brabus Bullit Coupe 800 – 2012 Geneva Auto Show

Brabus Bullit Coupe 800 – 2012 Geneva Auto Show

Brabus has reloaded its high performance arsenal with the new Bullit, an 800-bhp take on the Mercedes-Benz C-Class coupe. Of course, Brabus didn’t work its tuning magic on just any version of the C-Class; it chose the range-topping C63 AMG variant that comes with a snarling 6.3-liter V-8 engine. That motor is fine for us mere mortals, yet it was only getting in the way of what Brabus had in store for the car. Right now there is one very expensive AMG-tuned V-8 sitting in a dumpster in Germany, because Brabus has somehow managed to stuff a twin-turbocharged V-12 into the C63’s engine bay.

Brabus Bullit Coupe 800 – 2012 Geneva Auto Show

This mega powerplant produces 800 bhp and a mind-blowing 1047 lb.-ft. of torque. That’s good enough to endow the Bullit with a 230-mph top speed. The engine itself is a version of the Biturbo V-12 found in the Mercedes S600. For use in the Bullit Coupe, Brabus enlarged the engine from 5.5 to 6.3 liters. A custom exhaust was necessary to be able to fit the unit into the smaller dimensions of the C-Class coupe. The cost, like the performance, is astronomical. To put this matte-black beauty in your garage, expect to handover nearly $600,000.

Rubens Barrichello to IndyCar

Chalk this one up as Europe’s loss, our gain.

IndyCar racing got a well-earned boost as former Formula 1 driver Rubens Barrichello will join the KV Racing team for 2012. There he will be teamed with his old friend, Tony Kanaan, and EJ Viso.

The well-like Brazilian began his F1 with Jordan in 1993 and drove for the Stewart, Ferrari, Honda, Brawn and Williams teams, competing in 322 Grands Prix and taking 11 career wins.

With that background, the 39-year-old Barrichello will not be classified as a rookie in IndyCar, though he will run for those honors in the Indianapolis 500. As it happened, convincing his wife, Silvana, that he could go back on an earlier promise to not race on ovals was one problem Barrichello had to solve, but that was reportedly helped with encouragement from his two sons, Eduardo and Fernando.

Ovals can be a challenge, but Barrichello will be able to tap the vast IndyCar experience of not just Kanaan, but KV Racing’s co-owner and 1996 CART Indy Car World Series Champ, Jimmy Vasser. For 2012 the team will be powered by Chevrolet’s twin-turbo IndyCar V06.

Mitsubishi Electric Race Car to Enter Pikes Peak

Mitsubishi Electric Race Car to Enter Pikes Peak:

Mitsubishi Motors to enter 2012 Pikes Peak Int'l Hill Climb

At first, the thought of an electric race car competing in the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb seems strange. However, unlike a gasoline-powered engine, the power output of an electric car is not affected by altitude. If the battery can last long enough an electric car could be competitive.

With this in mind it’s perhaps not surprising to hear that Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC) will enter an i-MiEV Prototype in the 2012 running of the legendary hillclimb on July 8.

The single seater i-MiEV Prototype is a prototype based on the all-electric i-MiEV model, which was the first modern 100% electric car to go into mass production. It will be piloted by Hiroshi Masuoka who raced in the Dakar Rally 21 times, winning it consecutively in 2002 and 2003, driving Mitsubishi Pajero and Pajero Evolution models (known as the Montero in the US) respectively.

According to Mitsubishi, the i-MiEV Prototype will use the same components as the current production i-MiEV. MMC says it will use the data obtained from the event to enhance the durability and reliability of pure EVs and plug-in hybrid EVs, which it will be bringing to market in the near future.

Nissan Teases 2013 Altima – 2012 New York Auto Show

Nissan Teases 2013 Altima – 2012 New York Auto Show:

2013 Nissan Altima

The battle for supremacy in the all-important midsize sedan segment will really heat up later this year once Nissan and Honda unveil their new 2013 models.

The all-new 2013 Altima sedan will have its world premiere at the 2012 New York Auto Show in April – six years after the current model was launched at the same show.

So far, spy shots have not revealed much. However today, Nissan has released a video clip and image showing a dark glimpse of the new design from directly overhead in a studio. Thanks to the lighting it looks more like a sleek computer mouse with door mirrors than an average midsize sedan – let’s hope it looks as good from a more natural angle.

The Altima is sold mainly in North America and is built at Nissan’s assembly plants in Smyrna, Tenn. and Canton, Miss. The engines for Altima are made at the company’s Decherd, Tenn. plant. Last year the Altima was the second best-selling car in the US, behind the all-new Toyota Camry, and it has held onto that position so far this year.

Updates on this refreshed version of Audi’s mainstay are so subtle you need a keen eye, or the press pack, to tell you what’s been done.

The most obvious are aluminium finished door mirrors and an aluminium blade in the rear diffuser. Inside there’s a flat bottomed steering wheel, grey dials with white arrows and aluminium-look hubs, with the aluminium theme continued on the pedals and shift paddles.

Its three-liter supercharged V-6 now develops 328 bhp and 324 lbs.-ft. of torque, but the most satisfying aspect of this engine is its hearty roar under full bore acceleration when using the paddle operated seven-speed gearbox.

Driven: 2012 Audi S4 Avant S Tronic

Using the MMI system, the driver can select numerous modes that tune in the steering, suspension and engine response for comfort, automatic and sport. While it is the latter that unleashes the engine’s most vibrant sound track, it doesn’t add that much improvement to the car’s dynamics over the UK’s weather beaten roads. Opt for automatic and while the engine volume is slightly more subdued you get the best balance of ride comfort when highway cruising and sharpish handling when hustling the car down country lanes.

Driven: 2012 Audi S4 Avant S Tronic

Top speed is limited to the ubiquitous 155 mph and the 62 mph sprint is dispatched in five seconds, while you can expect average fuel consumption of 29.4 US mpg.

I like the practicality of small wagons and often think they are better looking than their sedan siblings and this version of the A4 ticks all the right boxes, but…it just left me a bit cold. Sporting sedans and wagons, to my mind, should want you coming back for more and the S4 just doesn’t make me yearn for that. Maybe the more extreme RS4 we’ll see next week at the 2012 Geneva Auto Show will do the trick.

Carlsson ML CD35 – 2012 Geneva Auto Show

More: 2012 Geneva Auto Show

German tuning company Carlsson will have a full lineup of modified Mercedes-Benz hardware on display this week during the 2012 Geneva Auto Show. We would love to grab the keys to the 652-bhp Carlsson CK63 RS, which is based on the already wickedly fast Mercedes CLS63 AMG sedan and, according to Carlsson, is capable of sprinting from 0 to 60 mph in 4.1 seconds. Not quite as dramatic, but still impressive, is the 310-bhp Carlsson has managed to find in the ML sport utility’s BlueTEC 3.0-liter V-6 – a sizeable jump from the standard 258 bhp. Also fitted is a set of 22-in. alloy wheels and Carlsson’s C-Tronic suspension system, which can be controlled using an iPhone or iPad. These cool touches are somewhat let down by CD35’s fussy new front fascia, which has gone into overdrive with extra lighting and polished mesh grilles.

2013 BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe Unveiling on Amelia Island

2013 BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe Unveiling on Amelia Island:

2013 BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe Unveiling on Amelia Island

Those of you living in Florida need no longer be envious of those in California – the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance is rapidly gaining as much attention from manufacturers as the more established Pebble Beach Concours, where many new cars have enjoyed being premiered.

Fans of BMW cars, will be pleased that the all-new four-door BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe will make its North American debut at the 2012 Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance this coming weekend (March 9-11).

2013 BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe Unveiling on Amelia Island

The BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe will be offered as three distinct models in the US. The TwinPower Turbo inline-6 2013 BMW 640i Gran Coupe is the initial model and arrives early this summer. Later in the summer, the TwinPower Turbo V-8 2013 BMW 650i Gran Coupe and the all-wheel-drive 2013 BMW 650i xDrive Gran Coupe will join the range.

As part of the Concours’ celebration of the 60th 12 Hours of Sebring, which takes place a week later, two winning BMWs, the 3.5 CSL from 1975 and the V12 LMR that won Sebring and Le Mans in 1999, will be displayed. The company will bestow the BMW Award for Engineering Excellence to the car in the Concours that best represents cutting-edge technology in its day. It could well go to one of the eight cars that were featured on Road & Track covers.

Aside from the new Gran Coupe, BMW will also display the all-new, fifth-generation M5 Sedan as well as the new 3 Series Sedan. Additionally BMW 7 Series models will be available for public test drives on Friday and Saturday.

Audi Quattro a No Go – 2012 Geneva Auto Show:

Audi Quattro Concept

More: 2012 Geneva Auto Show

This concept won’t make it to reality.

Work on a production version of the stunning Audi Quattro Concept that was unveiled at the 2010 Paris Motor Show has been abandonded by Audi’s performance division, Quattro Gmbh. A company official said that the division, which is also hard at work on the revamp of the R8 due next year, just didn’t have the manpower or resources to manage both projects, while at the same time developing RS models for the A4 and A6. The Quattro would have used a shortened version of the A5 platform with a combination of aluminum space frame construction and a composite body in a vehicle with a target weight of just 2700 lbs. Like the concept, the car would haven powered all four wheels from a front longitudinally mounted turbo 5-cylinder engine.

2013 Audi RS 4 Avant

2013 Audi RS 4 Avant:

2013 Audi RS 4 Avant

More: 2012 Geneva Auto Show

The 2013 Audi RS 4 Avant just unveiled at the 2012 Geneva Auto Show sets any car enthusiast’s adrenaline pumping. This sleek looking sport wagon will surely put away any lackluster memories traditionally associated in America with family haulers. In fact, I’d bet when you and your family pull up in this RS 4 Avant, others will drool with envy, whether it’s at a restaurant (Wolfgang Puck’s or Chucky E. Cheese’s), your yacht club or local elementary school. And best of all, the car will fit right in, no matter the venue.

2013 Audi RS 4 Avant

To me, the Audi RS 4 Avant is one of the best looking cars in the world. The folks from Ingolstadt have really fine tuned what used to be an overbearingly large trapezoidal Audi-signature grille into something that is aggressive yet blends nicely with the rest of the vehicle’s contours. The LED daytime running lights surrounding the xenon headlights complement large air openings below the bumper accentuated by a splitter. Slightly chiseled fenders front and rear give a subtle hint to the power of the car. The greenhouse is defined nicely by its aluminum trim. At the rear, the roofline tapers down and is supported visually by two oval exhaust pipes integrated into a diffuser.

2013 Audi RS 4 Avant

Inside the RS 4 Avant it’s all business, practically dressed in black with a few chrome, aluminum and carbon accents. Alcantara or Nappa leather can be ordered with sport seats, plus the latest and greatest infotainment system, all to provide a premium and sporty ambiance.

2013 Audi RS 4 Avant

Now that the family is pampered in luxury, it’s time for the car enthusiast in the driver’s seat to have some fun. Just look at the specs: normally-aspirated 4.1-liter, 450-bhp V-8 mated to a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission; 317 lb.-ft. of torque urging the car from 0 to 60 mph in 4.7 seconds, with a top speed of 155 mph (optionally, to 174 mph), all-wheel drive with torque vectoring, adjustable all-around multi-link suspension, and the list goes on. After dropping the family at the mall, do I want to sneak in some track time? If I opt for the 20-in. tires and front 15.0-in. 6-pot carbon ceramic discs, I’ll be all set.

2013 Audi RS 4 Avant

So what’s preventing me from rushing to the local dealer and putting my name on the dotted line? Sadly, the 2013 Audi RS 4 Avant won’t be available until fall this year—and only in Europe. Even more discouraging is the whopping base sticker price, when converted from euros, of $101,926. I can only dream about the ultimate family car…
