Samsung unveils Android-based Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus

Samsung unveils Android-based Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus:

Samsung has made the somewhat surprising decision to unveil yet another tablet to bolster its line.

Dubbed the Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus, the Android 3.2 (Honeycomb)-based tablet comes with a 7-inch display and 1.2GHz dual-core processor. In addition to 802.11n wireless support, owners will also be able to connect to HSPA+ networks from the device. On the storage side, customers will be able to choose from 16GB and 32GB variants, and a microSD slot offers the ability to add up to 32GB of additional storage to the tablet.

Samsung's decision to announce a new 7-inch Galaxy Tab comes as a bit of a surprise, since the company already has a 7-inch tablet that it launched last year. Earlier this month, the company showed off a 7.7-inch tablet, alongside an 8.9-inch option. Samsung also sells a 10.1-inch tablet. Considering it had nearly all form factors covered, who'd have thought that Samsung would need a fourth option to offer customers?

Amazon to lose $50 on each Kindle Fire, says analyst

Amazon to lose $50 on each Kindle Fire, says analyst:

Amazon's Kindle Fire

(Credit:
Amazon via Bloomberg)

Amazon may lose as much as $50 on each Kindle Fire tablet it sells, according to Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster.

In an investor note released yesterday, Munster calculated the manufacturing cost of each Kindle Fire at $250. But Amazon is selling its new tablet for $199. In comparison, Apple spends about $350 to produce a $499 iPad 2.

Assuming Amazon is able to sell 2.5 million tablets in the fourth quarter, Munster says the loss on each Kindle Fire could affect earnings by 10 percent to 20 percent. However, as other analysts have noted, Amazon isn't counting on sales from the hardware.

Instead, the company is hoping to draw in more consumers to spend money on its entire digital shopping center of music, books, videos, apps, and other products. If successful, that strategy should more than compensate for the loss the company takes on each tablet and the impact on earnings.

Samsung extends olive branch to Apple in Australia

Samsung extends olive branch to Apple in Australia:

Will the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 finally launch in Australia?

(Credit:
Samsung)

Samsung has reached out to Apple to sign an agreement that would allow the consumer electronics maker to sell its Galaxy Tab 10.1 in Australia.

In a Federal Court in Sydney earlier today, Samsung said that it has offered Apple a deal, that if accepted by the iPad maker, would see the Galaxy Tab 10.1 hit store shelves in Australia next week, according to The Wall Street Journal, which first reported on the story. Neither party divulged the details of the deal.

Samsung has been pressing courts in the country to allow it to sell its Galaxy Tab 10.1 for months. But so far, Apple has been able to stop the sale of the device, arguing that it copies the iPad.

Tensions appeared to subside a bit last month when Samsung said that it would agree to provide Apple with three versions of its tablet, and whichever was approved by the iPad maker, would be sold in the country. However, just a few weeks later, Samsung announced that it would delay the launch of its tablet in Australia to the end of this month, so th... [Read more]

How badly do the new Kindles hurt B&N?:

Barnes & Noble is due to release a new Nook Color shortly, but can it come close to the Kindle Fire's $199 price.

(Credit:
Amazon/Barnes&Noble)

For the last several months, Barnes & Noble had a nice winning streak going. Its $249 Nook Color tablet had been selling very well since its launch last October and its more recently released $139 Nook Touch was considered by many critics, including CNET, the top e-ink reader available--until today, anyway.

Of course, we, like everyone else, were waiting for Amazon's Kindle counterattack, suspecting it had some pretty good stuff up its sleeve. Lo and behold, in many ways it delivered exactly what we were expecting, but what surprised us was how aggressively it priced its new Kindles.

Kindle Fire's shortcomings: Little storage, no Bluetooth?

Kindle Fire's shortcomings: Little storage, no Bluetooth?:

Amazon answers to Kindle Fire's memory shortcoming

Often at big product launches, the devil's in the details, and companies sometimes conveniently forget to mention some features that may be perceived as negatives.

In launching the Kindle Fire, the big headline for Amazon was the tablet's impressively affordable $199 price tag. As Jeff Bezos said multiple times, "We are building premium products and offering them at nonpremium prices," and it's hard to argue with him when it comes to both the Kindle Fire and the new e-ink Kindles. But now that some of the euphoria over the launch has ebbed, folks are starting to look more closely at some of the potential shortcomings of the device.

Big on my list is the limited 8GB of storage, with only 6GB usable (and no expansion slot) and the apparent lack of Bluetooth (Amazon does not list it in the specs).

Others have mentioned the fact that there's no camera or GPS. Those feature may be important to some, but you just wouldn't expect them to be there in a product at this price point. After all, the $249 Nook Color also left off the camera... [Read more]

Affordable HTC Explorer debuts for global markets

Affordable HTC Explorer debuts for global markets:

HTC Explorer: Pick your flavor

(Credit:
HTC)

The HTC Explorer made its official entrance into the world today as the company's most affordable smartphone to date. Unfortunately, we don't know exactly how affordable, since the company did not disclose the price.

The phone is due out in the fourth quarter for Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Middle East, and carriers will obviously have a role in pricing the handset. Vodafone and Three UK have already committed to offering the Android smartphone when it's available.

The entry-level HTC Explorer offers a 3.2-inch HVGA touch screen, a 600MHz processor, and a 3-megapixel camera. The Gingerbread device also features HTC's Sense user experience, with a revamped home screen similar to the one shown on the HTC Rhyme. Other specs include Bluetooth 3.0, GPS, USB tethering, 512MB RAM, and 512MB internal storage.

No word yet on whether the Explorer will make the trek to the U.S.

Amazon Kindle lights Fire under Android, RIM

Amazon Kindle lights Fire under Android, RIM:

On a bang-for-the-buck index, the Amazon Kindle Fire rates high compared to similar tablets like the BlackBerry PlayBook that are hundreds of dollars more.

(Credit:
Amazon)

The $199 Amazon Kindle Fire is expected to put pricing heat on tablet market. And it's not just the iPad that will feel the pressure, according to an analyst and a cost analysis report today.

"It establishes a new price point for the low to mid-range tablet. Apple will likely have to respond," Ashok Kumar, an analyst at Rodman & Renshaw, said in a phone interview.

A report today from UMB TechInsights says Amazon will make a profit on hardware sales of its Kindle Fire "but probably only a third to a quarter as much as the Apple iPad and [BlackBerry] Playbook," according to estimates from TechInsights that show the Kindle Fire's bill of materials at $150.

That kind of profit margin loss-leader stance "can be viewed as a major blow to all Android tablet manufacturers who really have no way to compete since the channel mark-up would require [that] companies put their tablets at or below cost to beat the Kindle Fire price--and they still all lack the content that the Amazon storefront has," according to the report, citing Jeffrey Brown, vice president of business intelligence at TechInsights.

(Credit:

Although Amazon has just unveiled a 7-inch tablet, a new report suggests the company is planning to launch a 10.1-inch model soon.

According to DigiTimes, citing anonymous sources, the e-commerce giant is planning to tap Taiwan-based Foxconn Electronics to start producing its rumored 10.1-inch tablet. Foxconn is expected to start shipping the tablet before the end of the year to meet "holiday season demand," DigiTimes' sources say.

Amazon on Wednesday unveiled a host of new Kindles, including its 7-inch Kindle Fire. The slate runs Android and allows users to connect to the Web via Wi-Fi. It also has 8GB of onboard storage, and allows users to access several Amazon services, including its cloud platform and the Kindle e-book store. Most importantly, the tablet will go on sale for just $199 when it launches in November.

HTC is promising to plug a security hole in its Android phones that gives certain mobile apps access to a user's personal information.

Recently discovered by a trio of researchers, the vulnerability can expose e-mail addresses, network and GPS locations, phone numbers, SMS data, and system logs to apps that connect to the Internet. The flaw exists among HTC's portfolio of Android phones, including the Evo 3D, the Evo 4G, and the Thunderbolt, and has been traced to a logging tool that HTC recently installed during a software update.

LG Optimus LTE brings high-res, 4G Gingerbread to Korea

LG Optimus LTE brings high-res, 4G Gingerbread to Korea:

(Credit:
LG)

The LG Optimus LTE, announced today, is another new Android 2.3 phone we in the U.S. can only dream about from afar, at least for now.

The Gingerbread handset has a 4.5-inch touch screen with a 1,280x720-pixel HD LCD display. LG claims it's the "highest-resolution IPS (in-plane switching) display" available on a smartphone.

The Optimus LTE also has a dual-core 1.5GHz processor, and an 8-megapixel camera with 1080p HD video capture and playback. In addition, there's an HDMI port and support for DLNA, so you'll be able to play phone content on your compatible TV. An 1,830mAh battery will hopefully grant it long life.

The Optimus LTE picks up LG's pace in producing LTE-ready phones. So far we've been pretty happy with what we've seen, including the T-Mobile G2X and the Revolution. The phone maker has also recently reached out to prepaid carrier MetroPCS with the LG Esteem.

The Optimus LTE is currently slated for Korea. LG says its plans to release the phone beyond Korean borders are still "undetermined."

Samsung Galaxy Note launches in U.K. on Nov. 17:

It may be a little large as a stocking stuffer, but theSamsung Galaxy Note is coming to the U.K. in time for the holidays.

The 5.3-inch Android 2.3 Gingerbread handset is expected to launch at a range of U.K. carriers on November 17. There's no price tag confirmed.

Samsung first introduced the Galaxy Note at the IFA trade show in September, where the device's dimensions immediately stole the spotlight. While Samsung positions it as a jumbo-size Android phone, it follows in the footsteps of the Dell Streak by bordering on the edge of tablet territory.

Size isn't everything, of course. Looking like a Samsung Galaxy S II phone writ large, the Galaxy Note also impresses with its 1.4GHz dual-core processor and Super AMOLED screen with a 1,280x800-pixel resolution (WXGA) and pixel density of 285 pixels per inch (ppi). There's also a stylus.

Velocity Micro's sub-$300 tablets, hands-on:

Donald Bell/CNET)

There are a ton of low-cost tablets out there, many produced by fly-by-night brands, never to be seen from again. We've covered a few of them here at CNET and in most cases it's immediately apparent that you get what you pay for.

Velocity Micro is one of the few bright spots in the budget tablet world. Over the years, its tablets and e-readers have popped up everywhere from Best Buy to Sears and RadioShack. Their designs are never the prettiest and their specs are hardly cutting-edge, but the company has managed to consistently churn out solid little Android slabs, such as the Cruz T301.

Velocity Micro's latest batch of tablets is slightly more ambitious than the last. The 8-inch Cruz T408 ($229) and 10-inch Cruz T410 ($299) are lean on features, but the company has put some work into tuning the system performance for the type of responsiveness and load time you'd typically only see in tablets costing twice as much. Both tablets run customized versions of Android 2.3 on a 1GHz Cortex A8 processor, helped by 512MB of memory, 4GB of storage, and hardware-accelerated Adobe Flash. A gyro sensor... [Read more]

Editor's note: This list was originally posted on March 2 and is updated regularly.

The tablet market is like that kid in school who, at first, no one really noticed. Then, a year later he starts the school year a foot taller, with a new wardrobe, and suddenly everyone wants to be his friend. But, does he deserve his newfound popularity?

I really don't know. Personally, I've yet to purchase a tablet, and I've still not seen a compelling reason to do so. Still, millions feel differently and have already dived full on into the tablet sector.

Yet, every day there seems to be a new announcement of another manufacturer's plans to release a tablet. It's getting confusing and a little crazy out there, and we at CNET wanted to provide you with a snapshot of not only the current tablet landscape, but a look into the near future and how it's evolving.

We've compiled a list of all the major U.S. released current tablets interwoven with all the tablets yet to be released in the U.S. This list will focus on non-Windows tablets only for now. Ferrari CEO: 599 Replacement Will Pound Out “More Than 700 HP,” but “Not Because of the Aventador”

Ferrari CEO: 599 Replacement Will Pound Out “More Than 700 HP,” but “Not Because of the Aventador”:

2013 Ferrari 599 replacement (spy photo)

We revealed a little earlier today that Ferrari’s 2012 successor for its Enzo supercar will be a carbon-fiber missile powered by a V-12 mounted midships and augmented by a hybrid system.

In the same interview, Ferrari CEO Amedeo Felisa also confirmed that the replacement for the 599GTB—also scheduled to arrive in 2012—will retain its front-engine arrangement and will be constructed not of carbon composites, but largely from aluminum alloys. But, we asked, must the car have at least 700 hp to match the new Lamborghini Aventador?

“We are selling cars, not horsepower,” said Felisa. Then in what we must assume was feigned ignorance, Felisa asked exactly how much horsepower the Aventador makes. We told him 700, which is the Lamborghini-provided figure. (We convert that number, which is measured in PS, to 691 SAE net horsepower.)

Felisa’s reply: “We’ll have more than 700 horsepower.” He paused long enough to thwack us on the shoulder before continuing, “but it’s not because of the Aventador.”

The current 599GTB makes 612 hp and the GTO version made 661, so 700 isn’t too far off. Ferrari earlier indicated in official future-product plans that the 599 replacement will be a more extreme performance machine than the current car and also, of course, more expensive. We expect the car to appear at next March’s Geneva auto show.
