Speed Thrills at The Mojave Mile

Speed Thrills at The Mojave Mile:

Speed Thrills at The Mojave Mile

Looking for something new, we checked out the fall round of The Mojave Mile. And if you’re looking for a new automotive parlor game, miling just might be it. Anything can run, judging from the go-kart to semi-streamliners on hand, and daily driver enthusiast cars are especially welcome.

The event is dead simple and resembles a mile-long drag race against the clock. Vehicles time trial one at a time and the only thing measured is speed through the last 132 ft of the mile. All starts are standing (no push starts ala Bonneville), and the Mojave Air and Space Port’s 12,000 ft runway provides ample length, width and traction. While acceleration is not measured, clearly some of the more specialized high-powered machines require a bit of technique to get maximum benefit from what traction they have.

Speed Thrills at The Mojave Mile

With a little over 100 participants everyone had got in plenty of runs, especially Eric Anderson who made an adrenalin-draining 31 laps on his 182 mph Kawasaki.

In practice we found a cluster of daily driver street cars, some racers, then a surprisingly large and fast contingent of motorcycles, and finally, the odd balls. Miling is perfect for tinkers—hence Darryl Weflen in the 151 mph go kart—and for the bored with an old race car under a tarp. That explained Lance Smith’s vintage big-block Chevy Monza circle tracker.

Of course, we were bound to run into someone we knew, in this case open road race specialist John Barr and his spanking new silver 2012 Mustang GT. Like most of the unmodified late-model stockers it would consistently run on its speed limiter; 145 mph in the Mustang’s case.

Speed Thrills at The Mojave Mile

Other popular entries were ZO6 Corvettes in the mid-170 mph range, and some nicely prepped turbocharged Ford GTs dueling at 213 to 215 mph.

But if nothing else Mojave is where Suzuki Hayabusas go to play. These over-achieving two-wheel rockets off-handedly turned 180 mph, with many well over 200 mph. Top dog in all categories was Bill Warner, all the way out from Wimauma, Florida. His heavily-faired blue Hayabusa is claimed to be the fastest swing-your-leg-over-it motorcycle, and at 274 mph whose to argue? Watching it run was like seeing God step on a watermelon seed.

Speed Thrills at The Mojave Mile

Pretty much at the other end of the lazar timing gear was Deen Hylton’s sporting 139 mph in a PT Cruiser. Representing the free-thinkers, Ronald Waters went 165 mph in a 1955 Plymouth Belvedere, while the luxury set championed Justin Padilla’s Lexus IS-F at 163.3 mph.

If you’ve got the need for speed, The Mojave Mile runs once in the spring and fall, with dates to be announced at MojaveMile.com.

No Mall Thing

No Mall Thing:

No Mall Thing

While some people love going to the mall, these complexes are the last place where you’ll find me on a weekend. That doesn’t mean I don’t like parking lots, especially when they’re used for car shows or autocrosses. That’s why I agreed to help eBay launch its new shopping service as it looks to move beyond auctions into a retailing model similar to Amazon and other online merchants. As part of this program, eBay employed designer Jonathan Alder to create a series of storefronts in New York with participants ranging from actors to bloggers to select a product that would be featured along with a QR (Quick Response) code that would allow smart phone users to instantly shop items. I chose the 2012 Mustang Boss 302—one of my recent favorites. If you find yourself in New York City, check out of the storefront at 404 Park Avenue South through Nov. 10.

Can’t make it to New York? You can also access the eBay Inspiration Shop on your smartphone: http://m.inspirationshop.ebay.com

2011 SEMA Show Preview: A Real Retro Mustang

2011 SEMA Show Preview: A Real Retro Mustang:

2011 SEMA Show Preview: A Real Retro Mustang

Do you have the stones to buy a new 2012 Mustang and before the first payment is made take a Sawsall to it? John Heermann did, and the finished work of art will be at the SEMA show should you be going.

Shown here in its factory-fresh black paint and later primer red plus temporary tape job, Heermann’s Mustang is retro styling at its best.

Built under the tutelage of master metalsmith Doug Kielian in his Lincoln, Nebraska Auto Kraft Body & Paint shop, the custom 2012 Mustang GT wears ’68 and ’69 Mustang sheetmetal around it’s nose, tail and rear quarters, all expertly grafted into the basic 2012 body. Even the headlight doors and rear fender caps have been faithfully recreated—both from scratch—the hood lengthened 14-in. and the rocker panels custom built. Add in the quarter windows, side marker lights and vintage bumpers and about the only untouched portion of the car is the roof, although rear window has been raised slightly for the proper fastback angle.

And in case you’re wondering, there isn’t a thread of fiberglass anywhere.

A one-off labor of love, Heermann’s Mustang is not the forerunner of a line of small production run, it’s strictly his idea of what a Mustang should look like. Performance mods so far are a set of Dynatech long-tube headers and X-pipe, a JLT cold air intake, APR carbon engine cover and SCT tuning.

Just 23 years old, Heermann has been working at Kielian’s shop while attending college in Lincoln, but is returning to his Colorado family farm soon. Let’s hope he keeps turning out customs.

That’s Heermann at right with the black shirt; Kielian is at left in white.

First Drive: 2012 Vauxhall Astra GTC

First Drive: 2012 Vauxhall Astra GTC:

First Drive: 2012Vauxhall Astra GTC

Shelsley Walsh is the world’s oldest motor sport venue still in regular use having been founded in 1905. The 1000 yard course has witnessed drives by the likes of Raymond Mays, Whitney Straight and even the great Hans Stuck when the hill was part of the European Hillclimb Championship in the 1930s. And last Friday saw me driving the hill for the first time in GM’s new Euro hot hatch, the Opel-Vauxhall Astra GTC.

For once the UK media got the drop on our European counterparts as the British Isles is, by some margin, the largest market for this model. Its predecessor, the Astra Sport Hatch, dominated the class outselling its nearest rival by three-to-one in 2010 with VW’s Scirocco second, the Audi A3 third and Renault Megane Coupe fourth. And with Ford deciding not to produce a hot three-door Focus, GM clearly sees this as a chance to increase its dominance in this sector.

First Drive: 2012Vauxhall Astra GTC

The new GTCs slinky design only shares its roof panel and door handles with the more sober suited five-door, but despite its coupe styling there’s a generous helping of interior accommodation for both front and rear seat occupants.

Because of the UK’s dominant sales position steering and damper feel has been uniquely tuned for our roads. Much of the development centered around the introduction to the GTC of Vauxhall’s HiPerStrut, a first for an Astra model. Based on the system currently seen on the 320 bhp Insignia VXR, the HiPerStrut uses the Astra’s existing pick-up points, but reduces the kingpin inclination angle by 44% and shortens the spindle length (kingpin offset) by 46% versus the MacPherson strut-equipped models. This helps prevent torque steer allowing drivers to make more use of the GTC’s performance without the steering being corrupted.

First Drive: 2012Vauxhall Astra GTC

Adding the HiPerStrut has also reduced the amount of camber change on the GTC’s front wheels during cornering, improving grip. Steering feel is enhanced, too, helped by reducing the steering system’s friction levels. The geometry changes brought by the HiPerStruts also mean that the GTC can be fitted with 20-inch wheels.

Commuting to Shelsley Walsh in a 1.4-liter diesel – 108 bhp and 206 lb.-ft. of torque – confirmed that GM has made big strides in the car’s ride and handling and while the diesel delivered a brisk performance, 10 seconds to 60 mph, it was a competent rather than exciting drive.

First Drive: 2012Vauxhall Astra GTC

For that, the 1.6-liter gasoline powered option, with 177 bhp and a wide spread of 169 lb.-ft. of torque from 2200 to 5400 rpm, is far more suited with its 137 mph top speed and 7.8 seconds from zero to 60 mph. Fitted with a slick six-speed transmission the GTC puts in a strong performance on cross country dashes with smooth power delivery and a responsive, agile chassis that’s as good as it gets in this category. Ford is going to have its work cut out to equal it when sporty versions of the Focus debut.

Using a 1.6-liter turbo for my run up Shelsley Walsh resulted in a time of 42.22 seconds, compared to the outright record of 23.86 seconds set back in 2005. However, my time was good enough to beat Hans Stuck time of 42.8 seconds set in his 3.5-liter Austro-Daimler, mind you that was in 1930.

First Drive: 2012Vauxhall Astra GTC

The silver coupe pictured in front of the GTCs is a 1975 Firenza HP ‘Droopsnoot’ penned by Wayne Cherry who eventually rose to the top of GM’s design tree. Its 2.3-liter slant four engine produced 131bhp and the car was the first Vauxhall fitted with a five-speed ‘box. An homologation special it formed the basis of Vauxhall’s race and rally program back in the 1970s and this example is now part of Vauxhall’s Heritage collection.

Porsche Prepares Leipzig for 2013 Porsche Cajun

Porsche Prepares Leipzig for 2013 Porsche Cajun:

Porsche Prepares Leipzig for 2013 Porsche Cajun

Porsche is investing $693 million in its Leipzig plant for new manufacturing facilities for the 2013 Cajun soft-roader.

The factory in the former East Germany is already home to the four-door Panamera and the all-wheel drive Cayenne.

The Leipzig Porsche plant is also setting environmental standards, being one of the world’s most efficient car factories. For example, the air recirculation and power cut-off technologies in the paint shop ensure particularly economical energy use. “Sustainability of the very highest order is enshrined in our environmental principles. Our use of ultra-modern equipment and facilities is a valuable contribution to frugal automotive engineering,” said Wolfgang Leimgruber, Porsche board member with responsibility for production.

Porsche Prepares Leipzig for 2013 Porsche Cajun

Porsche plans for the Cajun to inject fresh momentum alongside the new generation Cayenne, which has consolidated its market position as one of the most successful sporting all-wheel drives in the premium segment. The Cajun is intended – alongside the Boxster, the market-leading two-seater mid-engined sports car – to provide a more affordable route for new customers to buy a Porsche.

BMW’s Car-to-x Communications

BMW’s Car-to-x Communications:

BMW’s Car-to-x Communications

Slowly but surely auto companies and OEM suppliers are developing integrated safety systems that can help achieve the holy grail of accident-free driving. Every new car sold today has safety systems, such as anti-lock brakes and electronic stability control, on them. However these systems are limited as they only help solo cars.

BMW is just one of many companies working on communication systems that go a step further and communicate with each other. Development work has been going on for well over a decade and it is getting closer to being practical for everyday use. European companies are working on standards to ensure compatibility.

BMW’s Car-to-x Communications

BMW describes its system as “car-to-x” communications since it allows for communications between cars, as well as motorcycles and the environment. It says, for example that the needs for a motorcycle rider are different from that of a car driver. Car drivers often miss seeing motorcyclists, especially at junctions, so if a motorcycle could broadcast its presence over a WLAN or mobile phone network it could warn drivers if they are about to hit a motorcyclist.

BMW says cars can play a pivotal role in this system as the original source of the warnings. For example, activation of car fog lamps or the highest wiper setting, or DSC intervention in an otherwise normal driving situation, may indicate adverse conditions, such as a patch of black ice, in a certain area. This information is then supplied to the motorcycle, keeping the rider promptly and fully informed.

BMW’s Car-to-x Communications

“Car-to-x” communications is not just about safety it is also a way for improving efficiency both in fuel consumed and optimizing time taken for trips. Traffic lights would be able to communicate with a car and advise a driver what speed to travel at so as to arrive at a junction just in time for a green light.

Systems advising alternative routes in heavy traffic caused by accidents are already available in many navigation systems, but they tend to be one-way communications. It would help alleviate traffic if a car could also become part of the network providing two-way real time updating of position and local conditions.

Karl-Ernst Steinberg, Head of Information and Communication Technologies at BMW Group Research and Technology, sums the advantages up: “The more information I have about the rest of my journey – for example, if I know in advance when traffic lights will change, or if I know that an accident has just happened further along the route – the more promptly I can react, which means I have less stress and can either avoid hazardous situations altogether or at least reduce the risk.”

Are you looking forward to enjoying driving vehicles that can talk to each other and give you advice?

2011 SEMA Show Preview: 2012 “Surfing” Kia Rio:

2011 SEMA Show Preview: 2012 "Surfing" Kia Rio

Traditional hot-rodders and fans of muscle cars will undoubtedly wince at cars such as this one Kia is showing off at next week’s SEMA Show. Truth is that today’s auto enthusiasts have a wider choice of vehicles to modify than ever before.

Kia has teamed up with Antenna magazine to create what it calls “a completely one-of-a-kind retro ride aimed at totally radical surfing enthusiasts.” It is one of six sports-themed vehicles that Kia Motors will debut at SEMA.

Antenna took an all-new 2012 Rio 5-door and turned it into a surfer’s dream, with a sunset-metallic golden-brown paint, front splitter made of wood to match an old school surfboard and striking gold wheels. The rear console of the Rio also has been completely modified to accommodate a retro gaming console that plays 80’s-style arcade games and music, and shelves for sandals and swimsuits.

Should we think of this Kia Rio as a modern day woody wagon?
