X Games 17: Rally Returns

X Games 17: Rally Returns: "

X Games Rally Course Layout 1

For American fans of rally, Rally Car Racing and Rallycross are both returning to X Games 17, sharing the spotlight with some of the most renowned action sports athletes in the world.

This year, X Games consolidated all of the events to downtown Los Angeles, where the competitions will be taking over the Staples Center, Nokia Theater and the local streets — the latter used for the rally cars. Instead of running on closed environs from years prior, rally cars will tear around the high-rises of Los Angeles over a mixture of street and laid dirt, including a 52-ft jump. The images are early renderings of the track layout.

Schedule of rally events*:

Friday, July 29, 2011

8 p.m. – 10 p.m. Rally Dirt Jump Practice

Saturday, July 30, 2011

9 a.m. – 11 a.m. Rally Car Racing Practice

11 a.m. – 12 p.m. Rally Car Seeding

1 p.m. – 3 p.m. Rally Car Racing Final (Live Telecast)

Sunday, July 31, 2011

While we’ve seen the all-new Subaru Impreza earlier this year, we have yet to hear much about the ultimate high-performance version of the car, the WRX STI. Subaru has been very secretive about the car, not allowing any information to get out to the media, but our colleagues in Japan were able to uncover some important details.

The STI’s launch is still about a year away—we hear that it’s scheduled to reach dealer showrooms in the summer of 2012. The car will first appear as a 5-door hatchback, with perhaps a sedan version to follow. It seems that Subaru has plans to compete in various motorsports events with the WRX STI, so expect to see the hatchback at rally events, with the sedan competing in touring-car races.

We’re still unsure how the U.S.-spec WRX STI will differ from the home-market version, but we do know that both will produce more than 300 bhp. The Japanese model will come powered by a new version of the FB flat-4 with a turbocharger. Our sources say that the 2.0-liter engine will produce 330 bhp and 324 lb.-ft. of torque, which is 8 bhp and 12 lb.-ft. more than the current domestic model. Despite the additional power, we expect fuel economy to improve.

Driven: 2012 Volkswagen CC Lux Limited

Driven: 2012 Volkswagen CC Lux Limited: "

2012-volkswagen-cc-lux-limited

While VW is poised to relaunch the Passat as an American-built Camry and Accord fighter, a little further up the line the larger CC toils away in relative anonymity, offering a luxury experience at a surprisingly affordable price. The handsome sedan subscribes to the coupe-as-4-door styling philosophy and has a sleek, steeply raked backlight that in profile recalls the original Mercedes CLS. VW has done a terrific job with its interiors, reflected in the quality of the materials and the precision with which all the elements fit together. This 4-seater offers plenty of room, and while it has a massive panoramic glass roof, don’t expect it to open like a conventional sunroof; it only lifts to provide ventilation. And when it’s hot out, there is considerable solar gain in the cabin if the sunshade is left open.

The Lux Limited version, in addition to offering the aforementioned glass roof, also comes with sat nav, 18-in. wheels and tires, 6-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission and dual zone climate control. While the top of the line Passat offers a 280-bhp 3.6-liter V-6 and all-wheel drive, the front-drive Lux Limited does just fine with its 2.0-liter turbo four, which has 200 bhp on tap and delivers 22 mpg city and 31 mpg highway. The CC is imbued with the chassis dynamics for which German automakers are noted: crisp turn-in, and direct steering with great road feel.

The Continental: A Maserati by Fendi, a Diesel A6 for the U.S., and More Diesel Hybrids

The Continental: A Maserati by Fendi, a Diesel A6 for the U.S., and More Diesel Hybrids: "

The Continental

Each week, our German correspondent slices and dices the latest rumblings, news, and quick-hit driving impressions from the other side of the pond. His byline may say Jens Meiners, but we simply call him . . . the Continental.

Maserati is coming back strong. Company sources confirm that a lot of new product will hit dealers beginning in late 2012. The procession starts with the sixth-generation Quattroporte, which will be followed by an SUV derived from the Jeep Grand Cherokee—and built in the U.S. (just like the Chrysler TC by Maserati). A more compact sedan is also in the works. If it manages to hide any Chrysler roots, the concept of a compact, powerful, and super-luxurious Maserati sedan is quite appealing. Less appealing is the idea of a diesel engine, but diesels for the SUV and the compact sedan can’t be ruled out entirely.

We will get treated to more insights into the company’s strategy before the new Maseratis are launched. Expect some more info out in October. Before that, at the Frankfurt auto show, the Italians will show two variations of the GranTurismo convertible styled by Fendi. Yep, a convertible styled by a handbag maker. Ahem. Would you really care to be seen in one of those?

A Designers Moves Up at VW

Luc Donckerwolke, chief designer of VW’s Spanish subsidiary SEAT, will be leading the Volkswagen Group’s Advanced Design from August 1st, reporting directly to VW chief designer Walter de’ Silva. The 46-year-old designer previously worked on various Audi and Škoda models before joining Lamborghini in 1998, where he became chief designer in 2003. The Murciélago’s exterior is entirely his proposal. In 2005, Donckerwolke moved to the struggling SEAT brand, where he created a new, dynamic, and angular styling language.

Donckerwolke will need to coordinate the future design themes of all of the VW Group’s brands, a formidable task for the hard-core car enthusiast, whose own collection consists of a Lamborghini Miura, a Lamborghini Espada, and a Fiat 850 Coupé.

Audi A6 Models for the U.S.

An Audi source has confirmed to me that the A6 Avant station wagon won’t come to the U.S., but an A6 sedan with the 3.0-liter turbo-diesel will. Expect a “clean diesel” with 225 to 250 hp, such as on the Q7; in the long run, however, there is hope for Europe’s twin-turbocharged 3.0 TDI. This 313-hp powerhouse is an awesome engine and takes the A6 into sports-car territory.

Another Diesel Hybrid

One reason Europeans don’t quite get hybrids is the fact that nonhybridized diesels typically get even better mileage than gasoline hybrids, without the cost penalty and complexity of the electrification. If you do a hybrid, go all the way, says Peugeot: the French company has announced a second diesel hybrid after the 3008 Hybrid4 compact MPV. The 508 RXH is based on the 508 station wagon; it is powered by a 200-hp diesel-electric powertrain that drives all four wheels. The hybrid module is supplied by Bosch. The RXH is the most expensive and most versatile of the 508s. Fuel economy in the European combined cycle will be close to 60 mpg, says Peugeot. By the way, Volvo plans to offer a diesel hybrid as well. Don’t count on it coming to the U.S., even though gasoline hybrids would pale by comparison.

So Here’s a Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Coupe Drifting Around Two C63 AMG Sedans [VIDEO]: "

Mercedes-Benz asked its fans on Facebook to vote for which vehicular stunt they felt Benz’s latest commercial should feature, and the fans picked a drifting figure-eight. What, no R-class jumping through a flaming hoop while pulling off a triple-axel? Not very imaginative, these Merc fans. Still, Mercedes answered the fans’ call and produced the video below, in which a Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG coupe executes its maneuvers around two stationary C63 sedans. Enjoy.

2011 Dodge Charger V6 Tested: One Giant Leap for Dodge, Three Small Steps Left for Fiatkind

2011 Dodge Charger V6 Tested: One Giant Leap for Dodge, Three Small Steps Left for Fiatkind: "

2011 Dodge Charger Rallye Plus V6

One giant leap for Dodge leaves one small step for Fiatkind. (Actually, three small steps.)

When Fiat swept to Chrysler’s rescue, many—including us—were simultaneously relieved and concerned. We were happy that a major automaker would live on, but worried that the savior ended up being an Italian automaker well known for many of the same issues (poor perceived quality, cost-cutting engineering) that got the Pentastar in trouble in the first place. Regardless of those reservations, there’s no denying the succulent first fruits of the tie-up. For the 2011 model year, nearly every model in the Chrysler, Dodge, and Jeep families received a remarkably effective interior renovation. The Dodge Charger and its Chrysler 300 sibling benefitted from a more robust rework, including thorough chassis and powertrain updates and new exterior styling.

Cadillac Prices 2012 SRX Crossover With Standard 308-hp, 3.6-Liter V6 at $36,060

Cadillac Prices 2012 SRX Crossover With Standard 308-hp, 3.6-Liter V6 at $36,060: "

For 2012, Cadillac has raised the SRX’s base price to $36,060, while also attempting to rectify the SRX’s powerplant shortcomings by specifying a 308-hp, 3.6-liter direct-injected V-6 as the model’s sole engine.

The SRX launched in 2010 with two disappointing six-cylinder engines: a 265-hp 3.0-liter and an optional, Saab-sourced 300-hp turbocharged 2.8-liter. The 2011 SRX started at $35,490, but we think the extra $570 commanded by the 2012 model is likely worth it given the much-needed refinement we expect the 3.6 to deliver. There’s also this: The price of entry for a 300-plus-hp SRX has plummeted by $14,730 from the $50,790 needed for the discontinued turbo model. Side bonus: “3.6 for 36″ is a handy mnemonic.

Granted, the additional $15K didn’t just buy the turbocharged V-6; the turbo model also brought higher levels of equipment. Speaking of equipment, the 2012 SRX now comes standard with Bluetooth and a color LCD driver information screen. The 2012 Cadillac SRX should go on sale in August, and we expect to gather driving impressions of the 3.6-liter model sometime soon.

2012 Audi A6 Avant First Drive: A Reminder Why Diesel Wagons are So Popular in Europe

2012 Audi A6 Avant First Drive: A Reminder Why Diesel Wagons are So Popular in Europe: "

2012 Audi A6 Avant

We get behind the wheel of Europe’s favorite A6—and are reminded why it’s so popular.

Redesigned for 2012, Audi’s A6 lineup is halfway back to full strength with the introduction of the Avant station wagon. The high-powered S6 and RS6 versions still are waiting in the wings—as is a hybrid model designed mostly with our market in mind, even if U.S. availability is as-yet unconfirmed—but already this is an impressive family of vehicles. In Europe, though, where a diesel-powered station wagon is the stereotypical executive car, the Avant is the most critical of all A6s.
