2012 Toyota Yaris: Looks Better, Drives the Same

2012 Toyota Yaris: Looks Better, Drives the Same:

2012 Toyota Yaris 5-door

Yep, it’s a car. There’s not much else to say.

The Toyota brand is usually pretty straightforward with its marketing—usually. But the new campaign for its 2012 Yaris at first left us scratching our heads. “It’s a car!” Toyota proclaims. And here we thought that was obvious. Then we had the opportunity to drive a preproduction Yaris around the artsy west Los Angeles suburb of Culver City and realized that Toyota was indeed right: It’s a car. And that’s about it.

Bruce Lee Is Stoked: Rolls-Royce Unleashes Year of the Dragon Collection

Bruce Lee Is Stoked: Rolls-Royce Unleashes Year of the Dragon Collection:

Following up the China Edition Ghost that debuted at Shanghai, the Tangelos in Goodwood are paying further tribute to the Western World’s future Middle Kingdom overlords in the form of the Year of the Dragon Collection. The exterior features a dragon-embellished, hand-painted pinstripe—or, in Anglo-luxe parlance, “a dragon coachline”—inspired by the Forbidden City. Not bad-ass and/or St. George–threatening enough for you? There’s more.

The Year of the Dragon Phantom also features the dragon repeated in the headrest embroidery (done by hand, natch), a dragon inlay in the passenger-facing dash panel, and LED-illuminated sill plates that read “Year of the Dragon 2012.” We’re just curious as to why Rolls is offering it now, given that the Year of the Dragon began on January 23. Then again, if there’s one thing we know about dragons, it’s that they appear when you least expect them.

Kia Says “Yes” to Rear-Drive Flagship, “Maybe” to Rear-Drive Coupe, “No” to Pickup; More Product Roadmap Tidbits

Kia Says “Yes” to Rear-Drive Flagship, “Maybe” to Rear-Drive Coupe, “No” to Pickup; More Product Roadmap Tidbits:

Kia K7/Cadenza

Kia offered us a look at some future product today, hinting at and even showing us some of the new and updated vehicles it has in the works. Below is a detailed look at the Korean automaker’s next few years.

Kia Cadenza Still Forthcoming, New Forte Soon

We took a Korean-market Kia K7, also known as the Cadenza, for the world’s shortest test drive. The K7/Cadenza is a large front-drive sedan that sits above the Optima in the lineup; the one we drove was powered by a 3.3-liter direct-injection V-6 making 300 hp, which felt more than adequate. (Interestingly, Kia officials told us that the Optima’s original plans called for this 3.3-liter V-6, but it instead got the turbocharged 2.0-liter four as its optional engine.) We have a strong feeling the Cadenza will show up in the States in the not-too-distant future, alongside the next-gen Hyundai Azera with which it shares its underpinnings.

A new Forte is on its way, too. Yes, already. The Forte was introduced in the U.S. for 2010, but launched in the domestic market in 2009. We weren’t given exact timing, but expect it to come soon, since it will share its platform with the recently redesigned Hyundai Elantra. The Forte will once again be offered in four-door sedan, five-door hatch, and two-door (Koup) variants. Expect Hyundai/Kia’s direct-injected 1.6-liter four as the base engine, with an updated, variable-valve-lift version of the conglomerate’s 170-hp, 2.0-liter four a possibility for the sporty SX trim. The next-gen Forte is lower, wider, and has a longer wheelbase, with chunkier styling that’s more in line with that of the brand’s current lineup. The 2012 Rio gives the best idea of the styling direction.

2012 Kia Rio5

2012 Kia Rio5

Sorento Face Lift, Large RWD Sedan

We were also given a preview of a face lift for the Sorento, Kia’s three-row crossover. The sheetmetal stays the same, with only the front fascia, rear bumper, and lighting elements getting massaged. The headlights can be best described as Saab 9-7X–esque, while the taillights resemble those on the Optima, reaching from the fender onto the hatch. The fog lights get turned vertical, as well. The face-lifted Sorento goes into production next summer, likely going on sale as a 2013 model.

And above that, Kia plans a rear-wheel-drive flagship sedan. Odds are it will use the Hyundai Genesis sedan’s platform and similarly offer V-6 and V-8 engines paired with the group’s in-house-designed eight-speed automatic. It will be launched in Kia’s home market in May of next year, making it here within 24 months after that.

2013 Hyundai Genesis Coupe

Rear-Drive Concept Headed to Frankfurt, EV Plans, and a Minivan

Continuing on the rear-drive front, Kia confirmed the rumors that it will show a sporty coupe concept at the Frankfurt auto show next month. We were told the concept is intended solely to gauge reaction at this point, and that a decision to produce such a vehicle hasn’t yet been made. We were also told that the RWD coupe would target the BMW 3-series. This sounds like a lofty ambition, considering that the Genesis coupe that likely would form its basis doesn’t keep up with the Chevy Camaro, let alone the 10Best-winning Ford Mustang. The Genesis coupe is scheduled to get chassis and powertrain improvements for 2013, though, all or most of which would make their way into a RWD Kia counterpart.

Kia is also planning to get into the electric-vehicle game. It plans to sell an EV model in Korea beginning next year, with a crossover-based electric coming in 2014 for global markets. We have to believe the U.S. will be one of those markets.

Oh, and a replacement for the Sedona minivan is on the way, eventually. There were some hints dropped that it will resemble the KV7 concept, which debuted at this year’s Detroit show. The wagon/crossover look would fit better with Kia’s current design language than would a traditional minivan shape. The concept’s gullwing doors are almost certainly out, though.

2012 Hyundai Veloster

Adding Speeds to the Dual-Clutch, and Ruling Out a Pickup or Roadster

Hyundai/Kia is working on a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission for front-wheel-drive applications. The Hyundai Veloster will be the first to use the company’s six-speed dual-clutch.

We also got a preview of a new touch-screen infotainment system that Kia is developing in-house. The interface reminded us a lot of Apple’s iOS, as it borrows some of its multitouch gestures (swipe, pinch) and uses a similar home-screen layout, while the status view is a good clone of the Mac OS’s new Mission Control feature, providing audio, climate, and phone info at a glance. There’s even an app store. This is likely the next evolution of Uvo, this time including navigation; the two are currently (and curiously) mutually exclusive options on Kias.

On to the “no” column: Kia Motors America’s marketing and communications chief, Michael Sprague, communicated an emphatic negatory to the prospect of Kia going after the pickup-truck market. He said that the U.S. domestics have that segment figured out and that Kia will instead focus on areas where it has already shown expertise. We’re also told to forget the rumors that Kia is working on a small rear-wheel-drive roadster, à la Mazda Miata. It’s not happening, at least any time soon. Even without these two cars, it’s clear that Kia engineers will have plenty of other projects to keep them busy.

Jaguar C-X16 Concept – Auto Shows

Jaguar C-X16 Concept – Auto Shows:

Jaguar C-X16 concept

A two-seat sports car from Jaguar won’t look back at the E-type.

The long-held hope that Jaguar would build a proper successor to the E-type becomes tangible with the announcement that it will bring what it is calling the “C-X16 production concept” to this year’s Frankfurt auto show. Along with the announcement, Jaguar released a sketch of the C-X16 in profile, and its proportions closely resemble those of the small Jag prototypes we previously spied, which were based upon chopped and shortened XKs.

Cadillac Confirms Production Converj Plug-In Hybrid, Renames It ELR

Cadillac Confirms Production Converj Plug-In Hybrid, Renames It ELR:

The Cadillac Converj concept caused quite a stir at 2009′s Detroit auto show—it was sporty, sleek, and, perhaps most buzz-worthy of all, used the Chevrolet Volt’s extended-range plug-in hybrid powertrain. Indeed, the two-door Converj concept was essentially a Volt in more dapper duds, and today GM announced it will go into production as the ELR. Cadillac had previously made a similar pronouncement, only to cancel those plans some time later. Adapting the Volt tech to a pricier—and therefore cost-amortizing—model makes a lot of sense, though, and GM appears to agree.

Other than the new Caddy nomenclature-friendly name, the Volt-cum-Cadillac won’t deviate much from the Converj’s formula. The car still will be powered by an electric motor juiced by T-shaped lithium-ion battery pack. As in the Volt, the battery will be charged either via a wall plug or by an onboard four-cylinder engine/generator to allow extended operation. In case you were worried, the 2+2 ELR should also maintain the Converj’s aggressively cab-forward, wedge-shaped good looks.

Cadillac says it has just started development of the ELR, so further details must wait. In the meantime, fans of the wreath and crest should tune in tomorrow, as we’ll be with Cadillac at Pebble Beach, where the company will reveal a new concept car.

2012 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque First Drive: A Small Rangie with a Big Mission

2012 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque First Drive: A Small Rangie with a Big Mission:

2012 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque

A small Range Rover with a big mission.

Can style rule in a utilitarian realm?

That’s the $43,995 question riding the broad shoulders of the smallest-ever Range Rover, the Evoque. To be accurate, it’s the $43,995 to $53,895 question, if we include all the trim levels. That lofty base-price range makes the thesis issue—the preeminence of style as a purchase motivator for SUVs—critical to this Range Rover newbie. A matter of life and death, even.

Frankfurt Preview: Jaguar C-X16

Frankfurt Preview: Jaguar C-X16:
Jaguar C-X16 Sketch

Jaguar C-X16 Sketch

This is the first teaser drawing of Jaguar’s long-awaited sub-XK sports car that will debut as a ‘production concept’ at next month’s 2011 Frankfurt Auto Show, going head to head with the new 911 as the star of the show.

The rendering clearly shows that design director, Ian Callum’s team has taken inspiration from the current XK coupe with most of the length taken out from the back edge of the door to the center of the rear wheel with much reduced overhangs front and rear. The grille is likely to take inspiration from the C-X75 hybrid supercar unveiled at the Paris Auto Show last year.

Jaguar C-X75 Concept

Jaguar C-X75 Concept

Jaguar is keeping its powder dry until next month, but expect a choice of V-6 gasoline powertrains, mounted in a front/mid-engined layout ranging from 275 bhp in naturally aspirated versions to 350 bhp in supercharged format; while later in its life a stripped out hardcore R version can be expected in 2015, two years after the convertible.

With its all-aluminium construction this should give the lightweight two-seater sparkling performance to take on the Porsche Cayman and other rivals.

Transmission to the rear wheels will be via six-speed manual although ZF’s superlative eight-speed auto is likely to be in the mix for markets like the USA.

Expect dazzling dynamics combined with poised ride as well, a senior Jaguar recently revealed a Cayman had been bought as one of the benchmark rivals

It’s a case of third time lucky for a new Jaguar sports car following 1998’s XK180 and the F-Type from 2000 which Porsche boss at the time, Wendelin Wiedeking, admitted to me would have caused “serious” problems for the Boxster if it had ever made production.

Build numbers and price have yet to be settled, but at prices starting around the equivalent of the $74,000 mark here in the UK, it will sit between the Cayman and 911. This will allow the larger XK to maybe grow in size to become more of a 2+2 and price.

Get down to your local Jaguar dealer now and get that deposit paid.

Pricing Announced: 2012 Toyota Yaris

Pricing Announced: 2012 Toyota Yaris:

toyota-yaris_051

It might not be the sort of car to pump an enthusiast’s heart rate up but the Toyota Yaris is an important entry-level car that appeals to many people wanting a reliable, solid, small vehicle at an affordable price.

The all-new 2012 Yaris has a slightly longer wheelbase and larger wheels than the first generation model. The overall length has also increased and the luggage compartment area has been lengthened by 5.7 inches, and widened by 2.1 inches, to increase cargo volume by 64 percent in the 3-door and 68 percent in the 5-door. Cargo capacity with the seat up is 15.3 cu. ft. on the 3-door and 15.6 cu. ft. on the 5-door.

toyota-yaris_052

The hatchback – oops, sorry, Toyota calls it a liftback – is available as a three-door or five-door model. The new Yaris will be offered in three trim levels, with the entry-level L and value-packaged LE editions available either as a three-door liftback or five-door liftback. The sport-tuned SE is available only as a five- door.

All models of the Yaris continue to be powered by a 1.5-liter, 16-valve, four-cylinder DOHC engine equipped with variable valve timing with intelligence (VVT-i). It produces 106 hp at 6,000 rpm and 103 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,200 rpm. The EPA fuel economy ratings are 30/38 mpg (city/Hwy) for the Yaris with a five-speed manual transmission and 30/35 mpg with a four-speed automatic transmission.

Overall the external styling is crisper and slightly more aggressive looking. One of the more unique features is a first for Toyota – a single-windshield wiper with “wet-arm system” for reduced weight and better performance. The system sprays washer fluid from the base of the wiper arm directly in the path of the blade for improved cleaning and wiping action.

Sticker prices, excluding delivery, will range from $14,115 for the L grade three-door liftback with a manual transmission to $17,200 for the SE grade five-door liftback with an automatic transmission.
