2013 Infiniti JX Crossover’s Front End Revealed in Fourth Teaser Image

2013 Infiniti JX Crossover’s Front End Revealed in Fourth Teaser Image: "

Infiniti’s seven-week reveal of its upcoming 2013 JX seven-passenger crossover marches on, and this week the company released its fourth and most revealing image yet of the JX. The previous three teaser shots of the JX were tightly cropped photos taken from odd angles: a closeup of a headlight, a taillight, and its left flank. This week’s JX tease shows most of the crossover’s front end, including its left headlight, grille, hood, and front fascia. The JX will be totally revealed in three weeks at the Pebble Beach concours.

Guess what ED stands for.

Your narrator, the man who is about to pass judgment on the transportation module pictured here, never even drove it home from the office, much less on a road trip during which he would encounter useful insights about the electric-powered Smart ED’s handling. And, yes before we go any farther, this car has an “ED” sticker on each flank. Just settle down with your Cialis quips. We’ve heard them (or made them) all already. It stands for “Electric Drive,” okay?

Behold Helios, the Solar-Hybrid Hollywood Production Trailer

Behold Helios, the Solar-Hybrid Hollywood Production Trailer: "

When a press release starts with a headline characterizing something as “the Prius” of anything, it becomes literary tee-ball for scribes who may not be so pious about the Prius. We usually pass on such low-hanging fruit, but a new solar-hybrid production trailer dubbed Helios, “the Prius of production trailers,” is just too juicy not to snatch off the PR tree. For those outside of Hollywood, production trailers are the mobile homes of the entertainment industry, the things that provide movie stars and production crews respite from the sun during shoots.

Helios was created by King Kong Production Vehicles of Newport Beach, California. And here we thought King Kong’s environmental efforts were limited to farting kilotons of CO2 into the atmosphere after each banana binge. KKPV’s efforts, on the other hand, include the utilization of a solar generator in addition to a bio-diesel generator, as well as the installation of bamboo cabinetry, recycled-glass desks and countertops, and recycled-rubber flooring. King Kong claims there are “more than 12 additional important environmental, state-of-the-art advances that make Helios the most environmentally friendly trailer ever built,” but apparently doesn’t find them important enough to mention individually. We presume they would make the Prius proud, if in fact there was any connection to the Prius. (Toyota assures us there is not.)

Testimonials from famous Priusites such as Leonardo DiCaprio and Julia Roberts were not made available, probably because there aren’t any; King Kong says that the sole Helios trailer currently in use has been used as a production office, not a star trailer. King Kong does claim, however, that during one long production day recently, the solar generator alone provided all necessary power, saving 28 gallons of diesel fuel.

Speaking of diesel fuel, however green the humongous Helios trailer may be when parked, it still has to be pulled around by a diesel-swilling truck, somewhat diminishing its Prius cred. Might we suggest that task be assigned to one of Toyota’s upcoming Hino-branded hybrid commercial trucks, considered to be—you guessed it—the Prius of commercial trucks? Add regenerative trailer brakes and King Kong might as well call Helios the Priusstream.

2012 Audi A6 hybrid

Audi’s satisfying A6 gets hybridized—and somewhat less satisfying.

Does driving a hybrid change a person? We’d rather leave that question unanswered, but driving a hybrid does change your driving style. All of a sudden, even the leadfoots around here shift their attention to the energy flow charts blinking in the instrument cluster, we don’t plot to pass every car in sight, and we make real attempts to maximize fuel economy and battery recharging. Well, at least for a few minutes.

Mercedes’ third-gen SUV lounges lazily in the lap of luxury. Off-roading? A little. Fun? Not much.

Before the recession, Mercedes-Benz had no trouble selling 34,000 MLs in the U.S. each year. For 2011, the company’s best-known SUV is back on track to hit 30,000 sales. Right now, in fact, ML sales are up 14.5 percent. “It puts us in a funny position,” confesses Mercedes U.S.A. president and CEO Ernst Lieb. “We’re spending millions to replace a car that remains a huge profit center.” It’s like replacing Yankee Stadium’s hot dogs with, say, toaster waffles. Cadillac tightens its focus on the Lexus RX.

The Cadillac SRX’s lead development engineer, Steve Kline, kicked off the debut of the 2012 Cadillac SRX by telling us, “If we’d told you back in 2009 that the SRX would move from number nine in the segment to number two behind the Lexus RX, you probably would have laughed.” Kline is right. C/D loved the previous, CTS-based SRX. Its rear-drive dynamics and interior packaging allowed it to win a comparison test and multiple 5Best Truck trophies, but failed to endear it to customers. We would not have believed that a front-drive-based SRX would rocket up the sales charts, but that’s exactly what happened.

The LEAF's Solar-Powered Future

The LEAF's Solar-Powered Future: "

Nissan recently announced a new goal for their LEAF EV - to reduce the vehicles draw on the grid while mitigating battery waste. You might find yourself begging the question...How is that possible from a car that already produces zero emissions?

Well, Nissan has a very bright idea, literally. In two words: solar power.

To prevent excess strain on the power grid and excessive battery waste,
Nissan is working steadfast to create a new solar-powered system. The
current system utilizes 488 solar cells situated on the roof of
the automaker's headquarters in Yokohama, Japan. In a recent
demonstration, Nissan placed four LEAF batteries into a box in
the lowest-level of the building to store electricity collected by the
headquarters' solar panels. Nissan reports that this is enough energy to
charge LEAF EVs for one full year.

Though the battery life of the EV is incredible, the margin between the lifespan of the vehicle itself and the life of the battery may become a problem as the LEAF gains popularity. Once the vehicle has reached the end of its drivable life, the battery will still have about 80% of its lifespan remaining. As you can imagine, this creates the potential for a lot of waste.

Nissan has enlisted the help of Sumitomo Corp to aid them in completing their solar-power project. The automaker hopes to offer similar solar-powered charging systems to individual Nissan LEAF owners, businesses and public facilities as early as next year. The specific month Nissan hopes to offer individual Nissan LEAF drivers the solar-powered charging station is this coming April. Field tests are scheduled to begin, this December.

Be sure to stay tuned to learn more. Boardwalk Nissan, located at 1 Bair Island Road in Redwood City, California, promises to keep you up to date on new developments surrounding this innovative project.

Cars of Comic-Con

Cars of Comic-Con: "

Comic-Con. What was once an annual gathering of comic book nerds, er, fans, in San Diego, California, has taken a turn in recent years to be a celebration of all things entertainment. Hollywood films, TV shows, video games, books, and of course, comics, make their big splash in front of the 100k-plus attendees and ensuing hordes of media at Comic-Con. Geek chic, is in. Curious about the spectacle, I attended the show for the first time and found a few cars that may or may not prove of interest.

This stainless-steel glinting DeLorean was at the Hot Wheels stand in the Mattel booth, flux capacitor, stolen plutonium and all. While debates rage whether you’d want to own an actual DMC-12, copping a scale replica from the film should be less of a concern. You may not be able to take the toy up 88 mph, but there aren’t any maintenance fees, either.

We caught this running homage to the Ectomobile not on the show floor, but on the streets of downtown San Diego while en route to a certain bunny-themed magazine afterparty. A spot-on homage with characters in costume, in the original Ghostbusters film starring Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd, the Ecto-1 was based off a 1959 Cadillac Miller-Meteor. Proton packs sold separately, naturally.

First Look: 2012 Honda CR-V

First Look: 2012 Honda CR-V: "

honda-cr-v

Honda has released a photo of the 2012 CR-V, which it describes as a concept. Officially, Honda says it provides a first glimpse of the styling direction for the fourth generation CR-V. We doubt the five-spoke wheels or blacked out windows will be the same on the production model but suspect the sheet metal will look like this when it goes on sale at the end of this year.

Overall the 2012 CR-V has a more aggressive look than the current 2011 CR-V. The biggest change is tighter integration of the sloping headlights into the front fenders and a nice kick up to the side windows behind the rear doors. The front bumper is slightly higher, giving the soft-roader a better approach angle for those who do want to venture off-road.

Honda has not yet released any tech details but says the all-new 2012 Honda CR-V will improve upon the current model in a variety of ways, including a more fuel-efficient engine and reduced body weight. In addition to all-new exterior styling, the 2012 CR-V will have an all-new interior with a more accommodating and spacious design with a lower cargo floor.

The Honda CR-V has been the best-selling SUV in the U.S. for the past four years, although the Ford Escape has outsold it so far this year. The CR-V is Honda’s third most popular vehicle behind the Accord and Civic. It easily outsells the Toyota RAV4.

The first chance to see the 2012 CR-V Concept in the flesh will be at the Orange County International Auto Show in Anaheim, California, in September.

undisguised-2012-porsche-911

The 2012 Porsche 911 has finally lost almost every inch of body-disguising tape and camouflage. The result is a car that stays true to the 911 ethos in terms of the overall shape and elegantly simple design of the iconic rear-engine sports car. Yet there are plenty of changes at skin level, as well as beneath the surface of this next-generation 911.

The biggest news—especially for taller customers—is that the new 911 looks set to gain 4 in. of wheelbase. This should translate to a noticeable increase in cabin room, even with the slight (0.5 in.) drop in the height of the roofline. Overall, the next Porsche 911 is approximately 2 in. longer than the outgoing version.

McLaren Opens First Showroom in Germany

McLaren Opens First Showroom in Germany: "

mclaren-dealership_01

The 2011 Formula 1 German Grand Prix takes place at the Nürburgring this coming weekend, so it’s only appropriate that McLaren Automotive opened the doors to two of four planned showrooms in Germany today.

Mclaren plans to open 35 dealerships this year for sales and service of a range of McLaren cars, beginning with the 2012 MP4-12C. The plan is for every showroom to exhibit a piece of history highlighting McLaren’s heritage with a real McLaren race car.

Customers in Düsseldorf can look forward to seeing MP4/5, which took Alain Prost to a world championship title in 1989, while Hamburg’s F1 enthusiasts will be able to check out MP4/6, the car in which Ayrton Senna won his third, and last championship title, in 1991.

mclaren-dealership_02

The first McLaren showroom opened in London last month and was quickly followed by ones in Birmingham and Manchester.

Following the opening of the Düsseldorf and Hamburg showrooms the other eight European cities, that will be lucky enough to see McLaren showrooms grace their city, will include Frankfurt and Munich in Germany; Brussels, Belgium; Paris, France; Monte Carlo, Monaco; Milan, Italy; Madrid, Spain and Zürich, Switzerland.

In the Fall ten showrooms are scheduled to open in Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, New York, Miami, Newport Beach, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Tampa in the U.S. and Toronto, Canada.

The Middle East will get six showrooms in Bahrain; Qatar; UAE (Abu Dhabi and Dubai) and Saudi Arabia (Jeddah and Riyadh). The remaining six showrooms will be in South Africa (Johannesburg); Hong Kong; Singapore; Australia (Sydney) and Japan (Tokyo and Osaka).

By the way, if your name happens to be Jay Leno you are one of the first customers to own a $229,000 MP4-12C. It’s worth checking out this video capturing Leno visiting the McLaren factory in Woking, England and then receiving lessons on how to drive his car from Chris Goodwin, McLaren Automotive’s chief test driver.

Spy Video: 2013 Porsche Cayman Caught Testing: "

The 2013 Porsche Cayman has been spotted out in the open while testing in Germany on the Autobahn.

Details are scant. From what our source tell us, the next-gen Cayman will share some features with the current Boxster prototype. From what we can see, the back half of the new Cayman takes on more of a gradual slope, giving the chassis less rear overhang. The rear hatch on the new Cayman does away with the vertical steps found in the current model in favor of a flush design, and the rear pop-up spoiler seems to have much more articulation. Taking a cue from the new 911, the Cayman’s side view mirror has been mounted lower on the door. The rear windows appear to be longer, and both the headlights and taillights have been revised.

Size matters. Enter the new Scion iQ, which measures only 120.1 in. from bumper to bumper, which means the car will fit within the wheelbase of our long-term BMW 760Li. Scion believes that the iQ will prove popular in congested metropolitan areas where parking spaces are at a premium.

2012-scion-iq-interior

We drove the iQ in such an environment: the streets of San Francisco, where sadly we didn’t have the chutzpah or horsepower to reenact the chase scene from Bullitt, but we did get from Point A to Point B within the city quickly, thanks to the car’s small size and nimble nature. The car features a tight 25.8-ft. turning circle, meaning it needs almost 16 ft. less space than the aforementioned BMW. And once at our destination, the little car managed to squeeze into parking spots that were previously reserved for motorcycles.

Pricing Update: 2012 Nissan Leaf

Pricing Update: 2012 Nissan Leaf: "

nissanLeaf2012

We’ve gotten used to electronic goodies declining in price while improving in performance, so wouldn’t it be nice if car prices kept going down as new technologies gain traction.

Fans of electric cars have been hoping the price of the Nissan Leaf would follow this path but sadly the opposite has happened as the 2012 Nissan Leaf price is rising by almost 10 percent.

The 2012 Nissan Leaf SV starts at $35,200 (plus $850 delivery) compared to $32,780 for the 2011 Leaf. The SL will be $37,250, compared to $34,570 for this year’s model. The monthly leasing rate starts at $369.

To be fair, the 2012 Leaf SL will have more standard equipment. According to Nissan, the vast majority of Leaf buyers have opted for the ($700) DC fast charge port, which allows the vehicle to be charged at 480V – reducing charging time to under 30 minutes for charging the vehicle to 80 percent from a fully depleted state. As DC fast charge stations proliferate across the country, Nissan expects this feature to become even more popular.

As the Nissan Leaf rolls out to U.S. markets with colder climates, cold weather features will be standard equipment on all trim levels of the Nissan LEAF. These include a battery warmer, heated steering wheel, and heated seats in both the front and rear.

The Nissan Leaf has been in short supply partly due to constraints caused by the March earthquake in Japan. Nissan says supply lines have now been restored and availability will improve as it becomes available in additional states. On July 25 Nissan will open up the ordering process to consumers with existing reservations in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia and Washington, D.C. Until now it has only been on sale in Arizona, California, Hawaii, Oregon, Tennessee, Texas, and Washington.

Starting in 2013 Nissan will be building the Leaf, including the electric motors and batteries, at its assembly facilities in Tennessee. It will then be able to produce up to 150,000 Leafs each year, compared to just 20,000 at present. Here’s hoping that economies of scale will help lower the price in the future, or at least keep it from rising any more.

We have our crafty spy photographers, and a chatty executive on Twitter, to thank for the latest scoop on Hyundai’s completely revamped 2012 Azera sedan. Set to debut later this year at the Los Angeles Auto Show, the new Azera looks set to receive additional horsepower and some slinkier styling. Gone is the staid packaging of the outgoing model, which pitched itself against comfort-oriented competitors like the Toyota Avalon and Buick LaCrosse.

From some angles, the new Azera adopts more than a hint of the competition in its exterior detailing. The curve of the rear fenders has a particularly Lacrosse-like look to it. Our spy photographers snapped this completely undisguised prototype as it relaxed in a parking lot. Interestingly, the car wears Hyundai Grandeur badging, the Korean market name for the Azera.

We doubt the lofty sounding badge will make it to our shores, however. We’d also bet on the new model sticking with the 283-bhp 3.8-liter V-6 engine and 6-speed automatic found in the current model. Though don’t discount a bump in power—perhaps up to an even 300 bhp—since Hyundai might opt to offer a direct-injection 266-bhp 3.0-liter V-6 as the base engine. (more)

Ford Fiesta Arrives in India

Ford Fiesta Arrives in India: "

ford fiesta india

Any new vehicle can’t be called global if it doesn’t have a presence in India, one of the world’s fastest growing automotive markets. With Ford touting the worldly credentials of its latest Fiesta, it was only a matter of time before the American automaker brought the subcompact to this country of more than 1 billion inhabitants.

The Indian market Fiesta will be available in sedan format, and in four trim levels: Style, Trend, Titanium and Titanium Plus. Customers will have a choice of gasoline and diesel-powered 1.5-liter 4-cylinder engines, though the only transmission available will be a 5-speed manual. The Fiesta enters a hotly contested small car market, currently dominated by Maruti-Suzuki. Hyundai and India’s own Tata Motors are also key players in the segment.

Roughly 20 years ago the Indian auto market was limited to a few outdated offerings, such as the Hindustan Ambassador and Padmini Premier. While the market still places an emphasis on value and economy, today’s Indian car buyer is as demanding and tech savvy as any around the world. Fittingly, Ford has outfitted the Fiesta with features such as Bluetooth and voice-activated controls.

“While adding dynamism and diversity to our showrooms across the country, this premium and engaging sedan brings in Ford’s global essence to the Indian market,” said Nigel Wark, executive director of marketing, sales and service at Ford India. The Fiesta will be built at Ford’s plant in Chennai, the sixth manufacturing facility to build the subcompact sedan and hatchback.

Two BMWs were unveiled before a scrum of jetlagged journalists today; a little boxy car named the i3 Concept (previously known as the Megacity) and the i8, the Vision EfficientDynamics hybrid sports car that graced Road & Track’s cover in March of 2010. Rather than wait for the 2011 Frankfurt Auto Show in September, BMW gave us a preview of all the electric mobility it is working on, with information on where the company is headed with all these batteries and electric motors.

For starters, BMW has named its electric mobility models the ‘i’ series. An i3 is essentially the electric equivalent to a 328, and thus an i8 is similar to the old 840 coupe. Don’t be confused though; this doesn’t mean an i3 is at all like the 3 Series sedan we all love. What it means is this: The i3 has all the practicality of a 3 Series for around town usage, but with superior electric efficiency taking the place of its back road sportiness. Unlike the M models in the BMW world, the i models aren’t efficient derivatives of standard models. Instead, they are wholly conceived to be unique and focused around their new powertrains. Although the 3 and the 8 are both i models, they are quite different.

The i3, of course, is still a concept, but the reality of production is near. You might not be impressed, seeing how Nissan already sells the Leaf, an apparent direct competitor. But the Leaf weighs 3415 lb. almost 700 lb. more than the i3. Plus the i3’s electric motor produces 170 hp, 63 hp more than Nissan’s. It also powers the rear axle for better driving dynamics. It is, after all a BMW and should drive like it. We’ll have to get back with driving impressions in about a year.

Getting Ready to Rally: X Games 17

Getting Ready to Rally: X Games 17: "

In advance of this weekend’s X Games 17 Rally Cross and Rally Racing events, BFGoodrich invited some select journalists to Fontana’s Auto Club Speedway (formerly known as California Speedway) for some excellent rally instruction.

And when BFGoodrich offers you a Group N Subaru STI rally car and a wet infield parking lot, you say yes. With Forest Duplessis doing the instructing and Ross Bentley telling us the best way to approach driving (including the mental aspect of getting your driving game in gear), it’s immediately clear that this is no ordinary tire show-off event.

The DirtFish Rally School cars were rolling on BFGoodrich g-Force Super Sport A/S (for all season) street tires, and honestly, I didn’t think they would hold up very well in our abusive activities. But they did, and I was pleasantly surprised at how much grip they had on the mixed wet and dry surface of our parking lot course.

These BFG tires have aramid fibers precisely and consistently placed within the ply of the tire, which allows the tread surface to maintain its shape no matter the load. They also have abundant siping and grooves to help keep the contact patch dry.

In an educational environment such as this, it’s good to have tires that give consistent feedback and performance. This is especially true in the world of rallying, in which the balance of the car is frequently upset via constant weight transfer!

As this year’s Rally events are on a primarily street-focused surface, BFG brought out a new tire for the event. Called the RC01, the tire is nearly a slick that features less puncture resistance than a traditional rally tire, but a stiffer overall construction. Amateur rallycrossers, take note: BFG has made the tire available to the general public.

For the record, the Rally Cross events feature four cars competing on the track at the same time; Rally Racing events involve two cars at a time.

X Games 17: Rally Returns

X Games 17: Rally Returns: "

X Games Rally Course Layout 1

For American fans of rally, Rally Car Racing and Rallycross are both returning to X Games 17, sharing the spotlight with some of the most renowned action sports athletes in the world.

This year, X Games consolidated all of the events to downtown Los Angeles, where the competitions will be taking over the Staples Center, Nokia Theater and the local streets — the latter used for the rally cars. Instead of running on closed environs from years prior, rally cars will tear around the high-rises of Los Angeles over a mixture of street and laid dirt, including a 52-ft jump. The images are early renderings of the track layout.

Schedule of rally events*:

Friday, July 29, 2011

8 p.m. – 10 p.m. Rally Dirt Jump Practice

Saturday, July 30, 2011

9 a.m. – 11 a.m. Rally Car Racing Practice

11 a.m. – 12 p.m. Rally Car Seeding

1 p.m. – 3 p.m. Rally Car Racing Final (Live Telecast)

Sunday, July 31, 2011

10 a.m. – 1 p.m. RallyCross Practice

2 p.m. – 4 p.m. RallyCross Final (Live Telecast)

*Times are all Pacific Standard and are subject to change. Live telecast will be broadcasted on ESPN. Visit www.xgames.com for up-to-date info on Rally Car Racing and Rallycross, as well as all other disciplines.
