Our spy photographers have captured a 2013 Lotus Exige wearing a production body and sporting some significant design differences. Compared to the outgoing model – which along with the Elise is not being sold in the U.S. for 2012 – the new Exige appears wider and bulkier, especially when viewed from behind.

After taking in that large (carbon-fiber?) fixed wing, let your eyes move down to the mammoth, multi-level rear diffuser fitted to this test car. Rear downforce definitely appears to have been a prime consideration when Lotus penned this car. The entire rear looks wider than before, even the taillights have a cleaner and more integrated design. A true rear window has also been fitted, which should greatly improve rear visibility.

The front end is dominated by air intakes, with a single hood vent replacing the split version found on the old Exige. Lotus has also jettisoned the old car’s roof-mounted air scoop.

According to our sources, many of these changes are due to the Exige moving to the same chassis that can be found under the Evora 2+2. There’s almost no chance of the 2-passenger Exige becoming anything less than a hardcore sports car, though the larger platform could provide a welcome boost to cabin comfort. Lotus has never been known for plush interiors, but we expect to find improved plastics, better instrumentation and much less of a kit-car feel throughout. (more)
