Long distance sports car racing looks set to take on a new phase of rivalry with news that Peugeot has undertaken a series of shake down runs with its 908Hybrid4 that it unveiled at the 2011 Geneva Auto Show last March.

Drivers Nicolas Minassian, Stéphane Sarrazin and Alexander Wurz completed just over 186 miles at Portugal’s Estoril race track in the diesel hybrid, which is based on the 908 Hdi FAP racer, although no times have been released.

The 908 HYbrid4’s test program is poised to continue with a second run soon at another circuit, as well as further bench testing.

“It will be interesting to see how the system performs at a different track,” said Peugeot Sport’s Technical Director, Bruno Famin. ”A new phase will also begin when we start to fine tune not only the hybrid system but, also, the car’s handling. We have no intention of rushing things, however. We are still on a learning curve and the endurance testing will come later.”

With Toyota and Peugeot revealing its hybrids, attention now turns to Audi and Porsche as we wait for more details of their plans for sports car racing which could be on the verge of entering another golden era.
