Is this another sign the global auto market is reviving – BMW has chosen to unveil its new ActiveHybrid 5 sedan at the Tokyo Auto Show next month, rather than in Europe or the U.S.
The full-hybrid 5 has a six-cylinder in-line gasoline engine, an electric drive system, an eight-speed automatic gearbox and a high-performance lithium-ion battery. This combination allows BMW’s third hybrid model to be driven on purely electric power around town. It also offers drivers a boost function for added acceleration. As another aid to economy, and usage of kinetic energy for battery regeneration, the car can coast with the engine switched off, when appropriate, at speeds up to 100 mph. BMW says the ActiveHybrid 5 also comes with a unique intelligent energy management system, which works in tandem with the navigation system to prepare the car’s drive functions in advance for upcoming road conditions.
The 305 hp in-line six-cylinder engine is the same one used in the BMW 535i. When combined with the 55 hp electric motor the total power output is rated at 340 hp. This is sufficient to take the car from 0-100 kph (0-62.5 mph) in 5.9 seconds, according to BMW. Average fuel consumption is around 35 mpg.
The car can be driven purely on electric power at speeds up to 37 mph. At this time BMW has not disclosed its range when running off the battery. Nor for that matter has it disclosed the car’s price.
Aside from a small badge on the C pillar and door sills, along with galvanized slats on the kidney grill and matt chrome tail pipes, there little to visually distinguish the ActiveHybrid 5 from a regular 5 Series. Optional 18-inch Streamline-design alloy wheels and a unique Bluewater metallic paint are offered for those who want to make sure their ActiveHybrid 5 looks different from their neighbor’s ordinary 5 Series.
