Fuji debuts 26x zoom X-S1 bridge camera

Fuji debuts 26x zoom X-S1 bridge camera: Fuji debuts 26x zoom X-S1 bridge camera

UPDATE: For more on the X-S1, check out Fujifilm X-S1: 10 things you need to know.

Fujifilm has unveiled its latest bridge camera, the X-S1, which features a 26x optical zoom and an f/2.8 maximum aperture lens.

The camera has been designed to match the appearance of a DSLR camera, and comes complete with metal dials and a rubberised coating. The X-S1 features the same EXR sensor taken from the X10 compact camera.

Along with the 26x zoom range, the X-S1 uses Fujifilm's Intelligent Digital Zoom capability which effectively doubles the focal length, while maintaining picture quality - according to Fuji. As a result, the X-S1 offers an effective 52x zoom range of 24-1248mm in 35mm terms.

The lens itself comprises 17 glass elements including four aspherical elements and two ED lenses, which promise to deliver edge to edge sharpness and clarity. Metal cams have been used in the lens construction for smooth zoom control and fast, precise framing.

Macro photography is made possible by selecting Super Macro Mode, which allows users to focus down to 1cm, compared with the 30cm minimum focusing distance when shooting in normal mode. The nine aperture blades within the lens promise to deliver excellent bokeh effects.

Sensor

The same 2/3 inch 12 megapixel EXR CMOS sensor as used in the X10 is included in the X-S1, which Fuji claims delivers high quality images regardless of the lighting conditions of a scene. EXR CMOS technology was introduced by Fujifilm and includes the ability to switch between three modes depending on lighting conditions - or have the camera decide for itself in Auto EXR mode.

High resolution mode is designed for bright conditions when the very best quality is the primary aim. Wide Dynamic Range is for when high contrast scenes are in front of the camera and the user would like both shadow and highlight areas to contain details, while the High Sensitivity & Low Noise mode is available for low light conditions.

Along with the EXR CMOS sensor, the X-S1 features a high-speed EXR processor, which promises a short shutter lag time of just 0.01 seconds and a high speed continuous shooting capability of seven frames per second at full resolution or 10 frames per second at 6 megapixel resolution.

Full HD video recording is also available with stereo sound and 30 frames per second shooting.

Composition

The X-S1 features an electronic viewfinder coupled with a rear LCD for composing and viewing images. The 0.47 inch EVF uses 1.44 million pixels and has a wide viewing angle of 26 degrees, designed to reduce eye strain.

The LCD screen is three inches in diagonal and tiltable, featuring 460,000 pixels. Daylight mode promises to combat the problem of glare when using the LCD in bright conditions.

Full manual control is available on the X-S1, along with fully automatic and scene detection modes. Sensitivity is available between ISO 100 and 3200, which is expandable up to ISO 12800 when shooting in small JEPG format only.

Program, aperture and shutter priority along with fully manual mode are available, as well as auto bracketing options, eight film simulation modes and white balance functions, and interestingly for a bridge camera, a raw file format.

The Fujifilm X-S1 UK price will be around £699 and will be available from February 2012.
