2012 Mazda MX-5 Miata Special Edition – 2012 Chicago Auto Show:

Only 450 of these special Miatas will be sold in the U.S.

Mazda introduced a new version of its venerable Miata at the 2012 Chicago Auto Show. Officially called the 2012 Mazda MX-5 Miata Special Edition, the “special” refers to a set of unique aesthetic changes, including the power retractable hardtop available only in black. In addition to the onyx greenhouse, the sideview mirrors are black, as is the trim around the grille and fog lamps. Velocity Red and Crystal White Pearl are two colors exclusive to the Special Edition. The door handles are body color.

Based on the Grand Touring model, the Special Edition Miata comes equipped with the Premium and Suspension packages—highlights of which include xenon headlights and Advanced Keyless Entry for the former and Bilstein shocks and a limited-slip differential for the latter. Other additions include 17-in. Black Gunmetal aluminum wheels and black interior accents. Look for black leather with gray stitching on the steering wheel, door trim, heated seats and parking brake. Horsepower for the 2.0-liter engine in the Miata remains the same—167 bhp for the 6-speed manual, 158 bhp for the 6-speed automatic.

So how special is the Special Edition? Besides the cosmetic differences and plethora of options, only 450 will be made available for the U.S. market. Available by the end of February, the 2012 Mazda MX-5 Miata Special Edition starts at $31,225 for the manual transmission and at $31,675 for the auto.
