2012 Goodwood Motorsport Season Announced

2012 Goodwood Motorsport Season Announced:
2012 Goodwood Motorsport Season Announced
Summer can’t be far off with details of Goodwood’s Festival of Speed and Revival meetings being announced.
Highlights of the Festival of Speed include: At least seven current Formula One teams attending and in action, including the first Goodwood appearance for double F1 World Champion Sebastian Vettel, along with the Red Bull Racing team and his team mate, Mark Webber. Vettel’s Goodwood debut links in with the 2012 Festival of Speed theme – ‘Young Guns – Born to Win.’
2012 Goodwood Motorsport Season Announced
The Festival of Speed will honour one of Britain’s most iconic and innovative sports car brands – Lotus. The company’s past, present and future will be celebrated with the main central feature installation outside Goodwood House, plus at least 50 significant Lotus race and road cars in action and on display during the Festival weekend.

Later in the year the Revival will feature, among things:
  • An at-speed demonstration of the Silver Arrows Mercedes-Benz and Auto Union cars, 75 years after their memorable race in the UK at Donington Park.
  • Fiftieth anniversary celebrations for the Ferrari 250 GTO, with plans for a daily parade of at least half the total GTO production, plus an all-AC Cobra race to mark the half-century of the iconic Anglo-American sports car.
  • A daily tribute to American racer Dan Gurney, 50 years after taking his first Grand Prix victory.
Plus, two very special races; a Nine Hours night race, 60 years after this first Goodwood race into the dark, plus a new Goodwood competition – the Settrington Cup for young and, presumably very fit, drivers in Austin J40 pedal cars.

Aussies vs. Brits – Who’ll be First to Reach 1000 mph?

Aussies vs. Brits – Who’ll be First to Reach 1000 mph?:
Bloodhound SSC
Ever since the Land Speed Record was first broken by a car driven by an internal combustion powered car 110 years ago, the outright record has been held by an American or British driver. (Prior to 1902 the record was held by electric or steam powered cars.)
Piston-powered cars ran out of steam in 1947 when John Cobb upped the record to 394 mph. Donald Campbell finally broke through the 400-mph barrier in the turbine-powered Bluebird in 1964. Since then the outright record has been held by jet- or rocket-powered non-wheel-driven cars. The current record has been held by Brit Andy Green since 1997 when he broke the sound barrier in ThrustSSC with a speed of 763 mph over one mile at Black Rock Desert in Nevada.
Bloodhound SSC
Now the goal is to break the 1000-mph barrier.
There are two teams vying to achieve this goal – Bloodhound SSC from Britain, with Andy Green as the driver again, and Aussie Invader, to be driven and built by Rosco McGlashen, who holds the current Australian Land Speed record of 500 mph.
The Bloodhound SSC team has garnered plenty of publicity in the last couple of years in Britain but the battle between the Aussies and Brits appeared as a front page story on the BBC’s website today.
Bloodhound SSC

The Aussie Invader 5R will rely on just a single 200,000-hp rocket engine but the Bloodhound SSC will be powered by both a rocket and jet engine. What’s more Bloodhound SSC will also include a Cosworth F1 engine that will function as a 700-hp pump to get fuel to the rocket!
Aussie Invader 5R
Both teams are currently building their cars and both plan to have them running later this year so they can go much faster than a bullet when they aim for 1000 mph sometime next year. You can find fascinating information and photographs of Bloodhound SSC and Aussie Invader on their respective websites.

Volkswagen Launches E-Golf Test Fleet

Volkswagen Launches E-Golf Test Fleet:
Volkswagen Launches E-Golf Test Fleet
Ready or not, slowly but surely, the number of electric cars on the road is growing. The latest company to join the band is Volkswagen — it is deploying a test fleet of 20 prototype E-Golf electric vehicles for a nine-month period in Detroit, Washington, DC, and San Francisco.
Twelve of the 20 vehicles will be allocated to selected VW employees who will have 220-volt charging stations installed in their homes. They will also get an iPhone with a dedicated app that will allow them to check the battery’s charging status, regulate the car’s interior temperature, find out how much time is left and even remotely start battery charging.
The E-Golf looks just like a regular Golf, except it is powered by an electric motor that delivers 199 lb.-ft. of torque, which is almost as good as that provided by a Jetta TDI. Juice for the electric motor comes from a lithium-ion battery with an energy capacity of 26.5 kilowatt-hours. The E-Golf has an estimated driving range of 93 miles, which seems to be par for the course with the newest electric cars.
Volkswagen Launches E-Golf Test Fleet
Volkswagen says that by studying E-Golf use across multiple geographical regions, it will be able to monitor the effect of climate conditions, driving patterns and energy performance. It plans to use the data and insights gained during the pilot scheme to enhance development of future EV technologies. For example, VW wants to discover the different characteristics of the electrical supply in US homes, which is 110 volts compared to 220 volts in Europe and other countries.
Coincidentally the first electric car I ever drove was a modified Golf back in 1975. Although it was an aftermarket conversion I was impressed by the car’s performance. I still enjoy driving electric cars and am beginning to believe they finally have a brighter future thanks to improved battery technologies coupled with advanced electronic control systems. If you’ve never driven an electric car, you should give it a shot if you have the opportunity.

Jaguar Land Rover Chinese JV Announced

Jaguar Land Rover Chinese JV Announced:
Jaguar Land Rover Chinese JV Announced
In a further indication of its global ambitions Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has announced a tie up with Chery Automobile Company Ltd on a proposed joint venture in China.
The agreement follows extensive talks between JLR and Chery on establishing an equal partnership company. The scope of the proposed joint venture (JV) would include manufacture of JLR- and JV-branded vehicles; establishment of a research and development facility; engine manufacture; and sale of vehicles produced by the JV company.
JLR is a latecomer to Chinese production compared to its arch German rivals who have seen sales boom in China in recent years. However, both Jaguar and Land Rover are enjoying record sales in China. Last year the two brands sold 42,000 cars a 60% increase over 2010 underscoring China as JLR’s third largest market after the UK and US.
Earlier this month, JLR’s managing director, Ralf Speth revealed they were also in discussion with several Brazilian companies about establishing a South American JV.

Audi R18 Ultra Crashes During Testing

Audi R18 Ultra Crashes During Testing:
Audi R18 Ultra Crashes During Testing
We wrote yesterday about Audi’s testing at Sebring, only to learn that one of the cars has crashed heavily. Timo Bernard was driving one of the non-hybrid R18 Ultras when the car apparently suffered a technical failure in the very bumpy turn 17. It’s thought the car’s right-front suspension failed sending the car backwards into the outside wall. Bernard was able to climb out on his own, but spent the night in a hospital for further tests. Audi has reported: “After analysis, it was determined that the same technical problem could not occur on the other test cars. Therefore it has been decided to continue the test.” Audi will be at the Florida track through Thursday.

2013 Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG Photos and Info: The V12-Powered Roadster Lives

2013 Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG Photos and Info: The V12-Powered Roadster Lives:
2013 Mercedes Benz SL65 AMG
In an age of engine downsizing and emissions-reduction mandates, one might expect the V-12 engine—volumes of which never were very high in the first place—to hit the endangered-species list. But Mercedes-Benz and AMG are keeping the breed alive at least for the near future, sliding the brands’ mighty twin-turbocharged twelve-pot into the latest SL roadster to create the latest SL65 AMG. With a price tag expected to top $200,000, the new super-roadster will create a veritable glut of six-figure, 500-plus-hp droptops in Benz showrooms, joining the $198,675 SLS AMG Roadster and the cheaper (at an estimated $140,000) 2013 SL63 AMG. The SL65 arrives this November. It will be available in 10 or so standard paint colors, the most important of which is brown.
