Infiniti Confirms Production IPL G Convertible at Pebble Beach

Infiniti Confirms Production IPL G Convertible at Pebble Beach:
Infiniti IPL G Convertible Concept

Infiniti IPL G Convertible Concept

While we were at Pebble Beach getting the lowdown on Infiniti’s new JX crossover, the company decided to slide this announcement under the figurative door: The IPL G convertible has been approved for production. The IPL—that’s for “Infiniti Performance Line”—droptop was shown at the 2010 Paris auto show as a concept, and will join the IPL G coupe at dealers next spring after debuting in final form at November’s L.A. show.

Infiniti says to expect most if not all of the concept’s add-ons to carry over to the production version, including the body kit, stupidly huge exhaust finishers, unique steering and suspension tuning, 19-inch wheels, and red-on-black interior treatment. It also will carry over the regular convertible’s folding hardtop and tiny trunk. The engine is an uprated version of the standard G37′s 3.7-liter V-6, with 348 hp. The six makes 325 horses in the G37 convertible and 330 in the G37 coupe, so this is definitely no AMG or M-level massage. Basically the same stuff is standard kit for the fixed-roof IPL, too.

It’s possible, though highly unlikely, that the additional change in horsepower will allow the IPL convertible to deliver more of a performance bump over its cooking sibling than does the IPL coupe. More probable, however, is that our test equipment will report the same results as it did for an IPL coupe in a recent comparo: acceleration, braking, and curb-weight figures essentially identical to the G37S’s. But in spite of that—and its third-of-three finish—we generally liked the IPL coupe for its fantastic steering, even if it wasn’t a road-slurping demon like the test’s winner, the BMW 1-series M.

The $49,795 IPL coupe commands a roughly $5500 premium over a G37S, and we expect the IPL G convertible to cost around $56K when it arrives next spring.

First Photos of Ferrari 458 Italia Spider Surface, Will Likely Debut at Frankfurt

First Photos of Ferrari 458 Italia Spider Surface, Will Likely Debut at Frankfurt:

That a roofless version of Ferrari’s mid-engine 458 Italia will exist is a foregone conclusion—we referred to the car as “inevitable” in last year’s 25 Cars Worth Waiting For feature. Now, the first photos of what appears to be the final version of the 458 Italia Spider have sprung up on CheersandGears.com. The car should be unveiled at the 2011 Frankfurt auto show.

Assuming the images are real—and not some Photoshop junky’s hoax—they don’t yet confirm what kind of roof the car will utilize. Ferrari’s California has a retractable hardtop, but it takes up a considerable amount of space when folded (just look at the California’s huge posterior), so a cloth roof is a distinct possibility here. That’s because the ostensible 458 Spider’s rear deck looks to be the same height as that of the coupe’s, and the top of the 458’s mid-mounted V-8 would be just inches below the Spider’s dual rear cowl. It would require some creative engineering to fit a folding hardtop in such a shallow space. Cut lines in the rear deck are for a flip-up tonneau cover; we’ll undoubtedly find out soon what it’s hiding.

The Most Powerful SLK Ever!

The Most Powerful SLK Ever!:

2012_SLK55_AMG_14

Mercedes has revealed the tantalizing specs of the 2012 SLK55 AMG, the most powerful example of the retractable hardtop roadster ever built. Sharing a similar front-end design with its big brother, the SLS AMG, the new SLK55 shoehorns a V-8 engine and some clever fuel-saving technology into its petite proportions.

At the heart of the car is the new M152 engine, which is based on the M157 bi-turbo 5.5-liter V-8 that can be found in the E63 AMG, CLS63 AMG, S63 AMG and CL63 AMG. Mercedes has jettisoned the turbochargers in the M152, but technical aspects such as the displacement, bore and stroke, and direct-injection systems are identical in both engines. In the SLK55 AMG, the 5.5-liter V-8 pushes out 425 bhp at 6800 rpm and 398 lb.-ft. of torque at 4500 rpm.

According to Mercedes’ estimates, the new 2012 SLK55 will accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds. The top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph, though the optional AMG Handling Package raises this to 174 mph.

Mercedes hasn’t simply shoved a big engine into a small car. The German automaker has also loaded the SLK 55 AMG with fuel saving features that include a stop/start system and cylinder deactivation. With the 7-speed automatic transmission in “C”—Controlled Efficiency mode—the SLK55 will determine if it can save fuel by switching to 4-cylinder operation. (more)

First Drive: 2012 Jeep Wrangler

First Drive: 2012 Jeep Wrangler:

IMG_7014

In July of this year, Jeep had its best sales month ever in the U.S., with 14,355 Wranglers leaving dealer lots. And those, we must remember, were vehicles fitted with a rather old-school 3.8-liter V-8, a pushrod iron-block engine that gets the job done but fails to make the 4000-plus-lb. Wrangler feel even remotely quick.

Now, that has changed; Jeep is fitting the new 2012 Wrangler with the 60-degree 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6, a 4-cam aluminum-block engine that puts out 285 bhp at 6400 rpm and 260 lb.-ft. of torque at 4800 rpm on regular 87-octane unleaded. That compares favorably to the old 3.8, which puts out only 202 bhp at 5200 rpm and 237 lb.-ft. of torque at 4000 rpm. What’s more, the new Pentastar V-6, which has variable timing on the intake and exhaust cams, weighs 90 lb. less than the outgoing 3.8.

jeepwrangler2

To make the Pentastar suitable for a Wrangler, Jeep engineers fitted it with a new 2-piece intake manifold with runners tuned to broaden the torque curve, a goal also reached with help from a new exhaust manifold that has significantly improved scavenging. Also, the alternator has been moved to a higher location, to let the Wrangler maintain its impressive 30-in. fording capability, and a new oilpan was created to make room for the front axle.

The base transmission for the 2012 Jeep Wrangler is a 6-speed manual; a more popular choice historically is the automatic, with a new A580 5-speed replacing last year’s 4-speed box. First gear is lower in the new automatic, which allows for a better low-range crawl ratio on the remarkably capable Rubicon models with their stronger axles, locking differentials and cockpit-disconnectable front anti-roll bars. Morning Meanderings… The Funniest Things Can Happen On Twitter

Morning Meanderings… The Funniest Things Can Happen On Twitter:

Good morning! Wednesday already!

A few days ago, Sunday I think, I had worked on cleaning the house all day, ran a few errands, made dinner… and eventually made it downstairs to curl up in my favorite chair.

I logged on to my laptop… opened up Tweet Deck and tweeted this:

@bookjourney: Ahhhh… finally… in my favorite chair with my favorite blanky and a little down time between lap top and TV. Anything good on?

*a minute later cell phone is ringing upstairs* I sign and tweet:

@bookjourney: Things that annoy… downstairs in fav chair, cozy blanket, and lap top and cell phone is ringing upstairs….

As I am preparing to go upstairs to check it…. I see this message on twitter:

@missremmersreviews: that’s just me. Ignore it. haha

I respond…

@bookjourney: wha?

@missremmersreviews: I texted. Whoops.

@missremmersreviews: Bad timing. LOL

(So if you are following this craziness… I am complaining that I am all cozy downstairs in my chair with my blanket when the cell phone rings upstairs, only to find out that reagan (Miss Remmers Reviews) – who is also on twitter at this same time is the one who is calling me. :razz:

Then another voice chips in:

@bonjourcass: @MissRemmers @bookjourney hahahaha

:razz:

Ok.. that was pretty funny. Turns out Reagan was texting me to complain that my post with all the audio book suggestions had added greatly to her TBR. :D

Ahhhhh…. my work as a book blogger is now complete. :D

Have an awesome day…. I have no workout to report as instead I came home yesterday, wrote a bit, and mowed my lawn which is a three-hour audio fest. (The audio? One Tuesday Morning – SO GOOD!)
