Car and Driver and Car Town Join Forces for Total Facebook Game Domination

Car and Driver and Car Town Join Forces for Total Facebook Game Domination:

Car and Driver/Car Town

Starting right now, you can combine your loves of Car Town and C/D: We’re in the game.

(A quick Car Town primer for the unfamiliar: It’s the top-rated social game on Facebook, in which millions of users collect super-cute renditions of actual cars—a few of which include the Ferrari 458 Italia, Honda Accord, BMW 3.0CSL, and Ford GT—and build their dream garages in which to house them. You can also race friends, customize your rides, complete challenges, and more. Learn more over at Car Town’s site.)

Mazda Furai C/D EditionWe’ll be hosting monthly Car Town design contests through next summer on our Facebook page; you submit customized vehicles around a theme, with editors selecting our favorites—even Phillips, once he figures out how to get the internet on his typewriter—for virtual Car and Driver 10Best awards. We’ll then open things up to our Facebook fans to vote on the very best submission, whose creator will receive a C/D-liveried Mazda Furai for their Car Town collection. The other 10Best winners will get a unique vehicle, too.

The first contest starts on September 13. You can head over to our Facebook page now for all the details, but don’t forget to go back next Tuesday to enter. You should also look for Car Town in the magazine; November’s issue has a code to redeem for a special RX-7.

You’ll find us elsewhere in the game, as well. You can customize your Car Town garage with our logo and posters featuring classic covers, and all game news and new-car releases will be presented under our banner. So you can get your fix of your favorite car rag while you’re making your BMW M1 or Lambo Aventador or—gulp—Toyota Yaris totally sweet.

2012 BMW M5: Downsizing for More Power

2012 BMW M5: Downsizing for More Power:

2012 BMW M5

The über-sedan fights back with 560 horsepower and a brace of turbochargers.

It’s probably fair to say that the previous BMW M5 (E60) crawled a bit too far up its own posterior. That fourth generation of the archetypal sports sedan was a complicated and abstruse car, with a clumsy automated manual gearbox, a V-10 that prized horsepower over torque, and a series of driver interfaces that was only slightly easier to follow than Swedish experimental cinema. Despite its 106-hp advantage over the M5 it replaced, it was somehow less thrilling and not as visceral, and its relentless pursuit of speed, though noble, came at the expense of everyday drivability. The E60 M5 was a car that was only truly happy plowing into an autobahn fog bank at 155 mph.

2012 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Roadster Driven: No Gullwing Doors, Still Feels Special

2012 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Roadster Driven: No Gullwing Doors, Still Feels Special:

2012 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG roadster

Without gullwing doors, the SLS AMG is every bit as enthralling—maybe even more so.

In creating a roadster version of the SLS AMG, Mercedes-Benz had to do away with the car’s signature gullwing doors, instead fitting regular old conventional doors. The resulting car is as delightful as the gullwing version, but some people worried that ditching the doors would mean the roadster would lose what is special about the SLS.

Toyota Prices 2012 Prius V from $27,160 and Prius Plug-In Hybrid from $32,760

Toyota Prices 2012 Prius V from $27,160 and Prius Plug-In Hybrid from $32,760:

Toyota has priced its latest additions to the Prius family, and the 2012 Prius V starts at $27,160 and the plug-in version of the Prius at $32,760. The tall, more family-friendly Prius V comes with a pile of standard equipment: Bluetooth and USB connectivity, a 6.1-inch audio system display, a backup camera, 16-inch aluminum wheels, and driver door keyless entry. For more toys, there are two options packages. The first, priced at $765 adds a navigation system and Toyota’s Entune infotainment system. For $30,750 total, a fully loaded Prius V gets 17-inch wheels, heated front seats, LED headlights, and SofTex pseudo leather seats.

The Prius plug-in (or PHEV) swaps the standard Prius’s nickel-metal hydride battery pack for a more advanced, lighter lithium-ion pack. The added juice capacity allows the plug-in Prius to travel 15 miles at up to 62 mph on electricity alone. The bigger battery costs more money though, and the base Prius plug-in costs a hefty $8480 more than the cheapest regular Prius. The plug-in does at least feature more standard content than an economy-grade Prius, adding heated seats, navigation, Entune, a backup camera, and LED running lights, but it’s still $4680 more than a comparably equipped non-plug-in car. For an even-richer $40,285 you can step up to the Prius plug-in Advanced, which adds premium audio along with SofTex upholstery, dynamic cruise control, a power driver’s seat, LED headlamps, and the ability for the nav display to show the locations of charging stations.

The Prius hasn’t yet been EPA tested, but Toyota expects it will be rated at 87 mpge when run as an EV, and the same 49 mpg combined as the normal Prius. Toyota also expects that buyers will be able to cash in on a $2500 Federal tax credit, but the car’s qualification for it isn’t yet complete. The Prius V will hit dealerships in October, but the Prius PHEV will only be available for order in 14 states by next month with deliveries starting in the spring of 2012.

2012 Chevrolet Caprice PPV Driven: The Most Potent Pursuit Weapon Since the Spike Strip:

2012 Chevrolet Caprice PPV

The cops get their most potent pursuit weapon since the spike strip.

As evidenced by the law-enforcement community’s loyalty to the Ford Crown Victoria, dynamic prowess is not a high priority for police cruisers. Neither is interior space. In fact, the Crown Victoria’s success suggests that the only things police departments look for in their cruisers are a V-8 and rear-wheel drive.
