The smaller, thinner, and lighter version of the already slim Galaxy Tab 10.1, the Galaxy Tab 8.9 has just made its way through the FCC. The sexy Honeycomb tablet should make its way to the US sometime in the early summer and while we’re not surprised that we’re seeing the tablet grace the FCC, we’re certainly excited about it.
With the exception of the physical dimensions and battery size of the Galaxy Tab 8.9 it shares the most of the same specifications it’s larger brother does. We’ll see the 8.9 incher sport the same 1280 x 800 display, 3 megapixel rear camera that can record in 720p HD, 2 megapixel front-facing camera, HD video playback, stereo speakers, WiFi (b/g/n), Bluetooth, and Samsung’s TouchWiz UX that’s actually adds a lot of small tweaks you won’t find in Honeycomb without heavily skinning it.
Coming in at a mere 470 grams, the Galaxy Tab 8.9 will be easy to hold on to for long periods of time without the weight getting to you. The tablet will also come with a lighter price than the 10.1, starting a $469 for a 16GB version and $569 for the 32GB version. The 10.1 inch version doesn’t vary greatly in price, as you can pay $30 extra and grab the 16GB version, but those looking into the 8.9 Galaxy Tab likely want it for its size. The price just doesn’t hurt.
Since the Galaxy Tab 10.1 will ship with Android 3.1 Honeycomb we can expect the same for the 8.9 inch version as well. While the changes between versions are small, the new features are more than welcomed. Android 3.1 offers up resizable widgets, better multitasking, and the ability to turn a tablet into a USB host. Unfortunately, neither versions of the tablet have USB ports and you’ll have to deal with the proprietary connector, but that sacrifice may be worth it for those looking into a tablet that’s so thin.
