Fisker is adding functionality to its mantra of environmental sustainability here at the Frankfurt Auto Show. The company is best known for developing the Karma, one of the world’s most gorgeous eco-minded vehicles—and one of the most often delayed, at least when it came time to selling them. Fisker appears set to add the Surf Shooting Brake to its lineup for the 2013 model year. This means the Surf should hit showrooms sometime next year, and we’re hoping the company can stick to this timetable.

That’s because this is yet another fantastic-looking car, though one that really isn’t all that different from the Karma sedan. Instead of a traditional trunk, the Surf now has a convenient hatchback and more room for luggage. The design is reminiscent of the Aston Martin Rapide, Porsche Panamera, and even the Ferrari FF. It’s a good look, as the huge 22-in. alloy wheels and exaggerated fenders give the Surf a lithe and lean feel. Fisker has even installed subtle roof-mounted cargo rails and a tiny spoiler at the top of the hatch.

Under the curvaceous bodywork, the Karma and Surf are identical when it comes to their powertrain. Both cars use a 2.0-liter 260-bhp turbocharged and direct-injected inline-4. This engine is similar in design and function to the 1.4-liter found in the Chevrolet Volt. Power from the engine is used to drive a generator when extra power or range is needed, while two electric traction motors directly drive the rear wheels. A lithium-ion-phosphate battery pack is positioned inside a central tunnel, to keep weight low and centrally mounted in the aluminum space-frame chassis. (more)
