Who’s the most environmentally conscious on the new car lot? The Green Car Journal has been keeping that score for seven years now, and has announced the finalists in its 2012 Green Car of the Year contest.
The five finalists are the Ford Focus Electric, Honda Civic Natural Gas, Mitsubishi i, Toyota Prius v and the Volkswagen Passat TDI. All are 2012 models, and the winner will be announced November 17th as part of the Los Angeles Auto Show.
Making the green call were the Editors of The Green Car Journal joined by representatives of major environmental groups and automotive enthusiast celebrities. Among others, these include Carl Pope, Chairman of the Sierra Club, Jean-Michel Cousteau, president of Ocean Futures Society, Jay Leno and Carroll Shelby.
Ron Cogan, editor and publisher of the Green Car Journal, says it’s no coincidence the five finalist vehicles use a differing strategies in their quest for environmental conservation. “…There is no single solution to our transportation challenges,” he stated while noting the VW Passat TDI champions clean diesel, the Honda Civic Natural Gas relies on that clean-burning dry fuel, the Toyota Prius v is a hybrid while the Ford Focus Electric and Mitsubishi i explore the electric arena.
