How’d you like to find a crate engine under the Christmas tree?
Ford has announced it is expanding its lineup of racing engines in 2012 with the availability of a naturally aspirated, 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder “Crate Engine Concept.” Ford says this engine is the precursor for a range of production-based I-4 offerings.
It’ll be an ideal engine for that B-spec Fiesta racer that caught your eye at the SEMA Show.
The “Concept” that kicks off the I-4 lineup is a direct-injection, 2.0-liter engine that features independent variable valve timing and the following specs:
- 2.0L Ti-VCT direct-injection I-4, as used in the 2012 Ford Focus
- Displacement: 122 cubic inches
- Induction: naturally aspirated, gasoline direct injection
- Horsepower range: 160 to 175 (estimated)
- Torque: 145 to 155 lb.-ft. (estimated)
- Compression ratio: 12.0:1
- Bore x stroke (in.): 3.44 x 3.27
- Valvetrain: DOHC with twin independent variable camshaft timing
- Fuel delivery: engine-mounted, high-pressure, direct-injection pump
All engines will be available as “plug and play” kits that include the necessary interface components for proper installation. The range of applications for this new line of production-based I-4 crate engines includes race cars, street rods, kit cars, off-road buggies and even marine installations.
The initial engine will be available in the spring of 2012 and Ford says future offerings will mirror the new line of powerful and technologically advanced engines in production Ford vehicles, including those with “EcoBoost” turbocharging.
Just in case you’re wondering, the traditional V-8 small-block and big-block crate engines will still be available. Indeed Ford has announced the Z363, which is a new version of the pushrod 302 engine that has been bored out to 363 cu ins (5.9L) and is capable of delivering 500 horsepower and 390 lb-ft of torque. If that’s not enough Ford has introduced the X427 crate engine, which is designed for street use and delivers a whopping 520 lb-ft of torque.
