ABT Sportsline Dials Up Anthropomorphic Menace for New VW Beetle

ABT Sportsline Dials Up Anthropomorphic Menace for New VW Beetle: "

German tuner Hans-Jürgen Abt has decided that the latest Volkswagen Beetle requires more zip. As a result, his company—aptly dubbed ABT Sportsline—whipped up this package as an homage to Abt’s first car, a Beetle which featured a 90-hp Microbus engine and what he refers to as “pert bodywork.” (Herr Abt is the only tuner we’re aware of who has described one of his creations as “pert.” We find this both odd and refreshing.)

The supplied photos suggest that hunkered-down, cross-eyed, vaguely anthropomorphic menace was the goal this time around, “pert” be damned. The package includes a full ground-effects kit, oval exhaust tips, 19-in wheels, and new springs. Of course, Beetle owners can mix and match components to taste and budget.

As far as engine mods are concerned, ABT has no firm numbers, but claims that the 2.0T package will likely produce between 230 and 240 hp, while the 2.0-liter diesel will make around 170 hp. Both would represent a 30-to-40-hp bump over VW’s stock units. The line is currently Euro-focused, so we have no word on impending CARB legality for California customers or whether anything will be offered for the 2.5-liter inline-five, which isn’t sold in Europe.

Also, no word as to whether ABT Sportsline has also developed an add-on bud vase for those Beetle loyalists who’d like to upgrade to the new model but fear for their flora’s display and hydration needs due to VW’s thoughtless abandonment of what was previously the signature interior feature.
