City of New York Buys 50 Chevrolet Volts to Spread EV Awareness

City of New York Buys 50 Chevrolet Volts to Spread EV Awareness: "

Since 2007 the city of New York has been expanding its fleet of electric vehicles as part of its PlaNYC push for metropolitan green-ness, and now the city has ordered 50 Chevrolet Volts for its squadron. The Volts are part of a 70-car purchase by the city and bring its count for hybrids and EVs to 430. The 50 Volts bought by the city will be distributed among its police, parks and recreation, and sanitation departments; Mayor Michael Bloomberg hopes the cars’ municipal presence will help set an “environmentally conscious” example for all New Yorkers. The Volts will join the host of Toyota Priuses, Ford Escape hybrids, and Nissan Altima hybrids that serve in the city’s fleet. A Volt in full NYPD livery was on display for the press announcement of New York’s Volt purchase, and we must say that it looks pretty Robocop-cool with its v-shaped light bar. We imagine that if GM ever builds its tall, Volt-based Volt MPV5 concept that it could make one efficient micro-paddy wagon someday. That is, if New York City feels the need to make the transportation of criminals a “greener” endeavor.
