If anybody claims to fully understand Neon Genesis Evangelion, that person is either totally bonkers or flat-out wrong. With an eye toward making his seminal—and wildly successful—apocalyptic sci-fi anime serial more accessible to the casual viewer, director Hideaki Anno is in the midst of revamping the series as a quartet of films, collectively known as Rebuild of Evangelion. And despite the franchise’s dark take on what might or might not be the end of the world (as well as some pretty creepy incestuous undercurrents), Toyota’s gleefully jumped into the mix, offering up the soon-to-arrive Prius PHEV (PHV in Japan) as the official car of Nerv, the organization that developed the series’ titular giant cyborgs.
Toyota’s gone so far as to recreate the junior high where the Eva pilots spend their off-duty time and commissioned a video demonstrating the car featuring Misato Katsuragi, the deadly, emotionally-stunted, functional-alcoholic goofball who drives an Alpine A310 in the original series and an O.G. Mazda Cosmo in the reboot. Needless to say, Misato is too much our sort of woman for our own good. Thank goodness she’s a cartoon. They’ve also painted a couple of PHEVs in Eva-inspired color schemes and launched a (sadly Japanese-only) website touting the collaboration. Meanwhile, we’re pretty sure that the Prius PHEV won’t follow the Evangelion units’ precedent and run for only five minutes when untethered from its power cord.
