Taiwanese mobile phone company HTC has acquired a majority stake in Beats Electronics, maker of the popular Beats by Dr. Dre headphones, at a cost of $300 million. Handsets with Beats audio technology should arrive sometime this fall. (Unconfirmed rumors swirling around tech blogs have the HTC Vigor being the first to receive the Beats treatment.) Though HTC’s products are popular, the company lacks the name recognition of a Samsung or Motorola, and it’s looking to this partnership to strengthen its brand.
