The Veloster might have gotten interesting again. After the shock of its funky door layout wore off, we discovered that the basic model—powered by a 138-hp, naturally aspirated 1.6-liter four—didn’t offer much to hold our attention. An uninspiring driving experience combined with ridiculously slow acceleration (8.5 seconds to 60 with a manual, 9.1 with the dual-clutch automatic) render it pretty forgettable. But now Hyundai’s front-drive coupe-hatch-ma-bob may actually have something to recommend it besides alien-lander looks: a turbocharged engine.
