Dr. Andrew Marino and his colleagues at Louisiana State University have just published a study proving the existence of electromagnetic hypersensitivity as an organic syndrome. They did a thorough medical workup on a subject (a female physician) who claimed to have EHS, and showed that she reacted within 100 seconds of being exposed to low-level pulsed electromagnetic fields with headache, muscle twitching, skipped heartbeats and other symptoms. This was a carefully designed double-blind test, repeated many times. Although the subject could not consciously perceive the field, her body reacted every time it was turned on. ABSTRACT

Objective: We sought direct evidence that acute exposure to environmental-strength electromagnetic fields could induce somatic reactions (EMF hypersensitivity).

Methods: The subject, a female physician self-diagnosed with EMF hypersensitivity, was exposed to an average (over the head) 60-Hz electric field of 300 V/m (comparable to typical environmental-strength EMFs) during controlled provocation and behavioral studies.

Results: In a double-blinded EMF provocation procedure specifically designed to minimize unintentional sensory cues, the subject developed temporal pain, headache, muscle-twitching, and skipped heartbeats within 100 s after initiation of EMF exposure (P < 0.05). The symptoms were caused primarily by field transitions (off-on, on-off) rather than the presence of the field, as assessed by comparing the frequency and severity of the effects of pulsed and continuous fields in relation to sham exposure. The subject had no conscious perception of the field as judged by her inability to report its presence more often than in the sham control.

Discussion: The subject demonstrated statistically reliable somatic reactions in response to exposure to subliminal EMFs under conditions that reasonably excluded a causative role for psychological processes.

Conclusion: EMF hypersensitivity can occur as a bona fide environmentally-inducible neurological syndrome.

Exposure levels

Mobile phones are low-powered radiofrequency transmitters, operating at frequencies between 450 and 2700 MHz with peak powers in the range of 0.1 to 2 watts. The handset only transmits power when it is turned on. The power (and hence the radiofrequency exposure to a user) falls off rapidly with increasing distance from the handset. A person using a mobile phone 30–40 cm away from their body – for example when text messaging, accessing the Internet, or using a “hands free” device – will therefore have a much lower exposure to radiofrequency fields than someone holding the handset against their head.

In addition to using “hands-free” devices, which keep mobile phones away from the head and body during phone calls, exposure is also reduced by limiting the number and length of calls. Using the phone in areas of good reception also decreases exposure as it allows the phone to transmit at reduced power. The use of commercial devices for reducing radiofrequency field exposure has not been shown to be effective.

Mobile phones are often prohibited in hospitals and on airplanes, as the radiofrequency signals may interfere with certain electro-medical devices and navigation systems.

Are there any health effects?

A large number of studies have been performed over the last two decades to assess whether mobile phones pose a potential health risk. To date, no adverse health effects have been established as being caused by mobile phone use.

Short-term effects

Two new Lotuses are making their debut at the 2011 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance: the Exige Matte Black Final Edition and this sweet, new Evora GTE Road Car concept. Inspired by the Evora GTE race car, the Road Car concept features a race-developed engine that puts out more than 420 hp, a sequential manual gearbox, and ultra-lightweight forged wheels with center-lock hubs and Pirelli P-Zero Corsa tires. Other modifications include a ground-scraping front fascia, louvered air extractors in the hood, and a stand-up rear wing. Lotus claims the Evora GTE “isn’t merely a paint scheme or homage to a race car,” but rather “a serious race car that makes for a very serious road car.” Word.

If you’re one of the lucky chaps trolling the Monterey Peninsula over the next few days and want to see the car in the metal, the unveiling officially happens at the McCall’s Motorworks Revival event on the night of Wednesday, August 17, at the Monterey Jet Center. Figure on similar or slightly higher numbers—but with dollar signs in front—when they hit dealers here. (Seems like a lot for a handbag, no?) Whether Americans will be smitten with tiny subcompacts with big price tags and high-end fashion-house connections remains to be seen, but the response at Fashion Week should be as good a barometer as any.

The thing about the O.G. Q45 ads—which also served to introduce Nissan’s then-new luxury brand to the American public—is that they didn’t feature the car. Eterniti is taking a similar tack with the web spot for its new Hemera, merely letting us know that a storm of limitless force is brewing. One that will hit us. It’s apparently powerful and intense. It’s got us wondering if Lotus’s band of community-college marketing-major dropouts are taking side jobs.

The Hemera (which sounds to us like some sort of internal injury inflicted by the new Pagani Huayra), will apparently be revealed to the world at next month’s Frankfurt show. The rendering looks something like a cross between an Aston, an Infiniti FX, and a rather cross grouper. No word as to whether Swizz Beatz is involved.
