In advance of next month’s 2011 Frankfurt Auto Show, Audi has released sketches of a concept for an all-new electric city car. Called the Audi Urban Concept, this ultra-light car has the look of a dune buggy that features staggered side-by-side seating, free-standing wheels and an aircraft-inspired sliding canopy for access to the passenger cabin.
While the sketches offer a conceptual look at the car, spy shots of the test mule give a better idea of the proportions and size of this new urban buggy. In those shots, the camouflage covers the full extent of the grille opening, which is similar to the A8’s.
Powered by a pair of e-tron electric motors fed juice from a compact lithium-ion battery pack, the Audi Urban Concept features lightweight construction that includes a carbon fiber-reinforced polymer body and free-standing wheels that eliminate the need for conventional fenders and bodywork. Instead, the 21-in tires have small cycle-style fenders front and rear. (more)
