Our spy photographers have given us a two for one special, with a Mk 7 Golf 5-door and GTI 3-door caught testing. From the elaborate rubber body suits fitted to both test mules, you might suspect a Volkswagen engineer somewhere has been watching The Matrix a bit too often. Nice try VW, but there’s no mistaking this for anything other than the seventh-generation Golf due to arrive in 2012.

The 5-door Golf pictured here is riding on simple steel wheels, and sports a pair of chrome exhausts peeking out the left rear corner of the car. As for the GTI, ignore those faux rear door coverings and turn your attention to the more aggressive exhaust setup, which includes twin pipes at opposite ends of the rear bumper. A set a telephone-dial style alloy wheels is a none-too-subtle hint that this little VW is in sport-tuned format.

What we can’t see is the refined front end of either car. But with the Golf being one of Europe’s best selling vehicles—and hugely important to the VW brand—don’t expect any drastic design changes. Slimmer headlights and a more refined grille are about as crazy as VW is going to get. The GTI, like always, will have a modestly meaner front end and sit lower to the ground. (more)
