New Fiat Panda:

Fiat has released basic pics and information of the new 2012 Fiat Panda which gets a bit grown-up for its third generation. A long history in Italy and abroad, the Fiat Panda continues what the brand describes as its “functional design, manoeuvrability, space, reliability and comfort”.

We’d pretty much have to agree with that. The compact SUV-style citycar gets a new look and updated engine range which will debut at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show. Despite a more modern and mature style with a redesigned front grille and headlights, the new Panda does still have a snuggly look which should help it continue to appeal to families.

The Fiat Panda has grown slightly in size to 365 cm long to maximise interior space both for passengers and luggage space. New flexible seating arrangements have been included where the rear seat can be split and slid to make more room and the front passenger seat can fold down to make a table. There is also a flat storage space option called the “cargo box” for the boot, although Fiat offers no capacity figures. Other redesigned interior elements include an updated dash which works like a large “shell” for optimal storage capacity.

The new Fiat Panda will get a series of new engines, starting with the two-cylinder, one-litre TwinAir Turbo with 85 hp. It’s followed by the one-litre Aspirated TwinAir with 65 hp, both of which have start&stop technology as standard. A third petrol engine at launch is the 1.2-litre Fire model with 69 hp.

On the diesel front, the 1.3 Multijet II with 75 hp kicks things off, with start&stop technology as standard. It’s joined by the bifuel TwinAir Turbo natural power unit with 80 hp and the 1.2-litre EasyPower petrol-LPG unit with 69 hp will follow. More technology is to come in the future, including four-wheel drive, a Dualogic automatic transmission, and a new brake system which detects obstacles.

Full details including fuel emissions figures will be released at the Frankfurt show. Production is expected to start in November for 2012 Panda sales across Europe.
